Chapter 114

As Mercer said, Jasmine arrived at the mountain villa with Calla’s personal belongings that evening.

Jasmine cooked egg pasta for Calla’s dinner. However, Calla was too angry to have any appetite.

Dawn arrived after a restless night.

Calla stood by the floor–to–ceiling window on the second floor, overlooking the entire courtyard. As the weather in the mountains was much colder than in the city, she had a robe draped over her shoulders.

The rays from the morning sun in the mountains were particularly beautiful and serene, but she was in no mood to appreciate it.

The Othopian–styled villa had luxurious decor and furniture. Even the crystal glasses for drinking water were imported. The floors were covered with wool rugs.

Although it was midsummer in Riverford, it was damp and cold on the mountaintop. At night, Calla had to cover herself with thick blankets to stay warm.

Mercer had certainly found an exquisite cage to lock her in.

Besides loneliness and solitude, Calla also felt a touch of fear. She finally knew how dangerous it was to anger Mercer.

Since her phone had been smashed by him, her family and friends who couldn’t contact her must have been worried sick.

The villa’s phone had been locked by Mercer’s orders, It could only be used to contact Mercer and Simon; no other numbers could be dialed.

After thinking for a night, Calla couldn’t come up with a good plan. She resorted to bombarding Mercer with phone calls.

“Mercer, let me out right now. Do you hear me?”

“Mercer, I don’t want to stay here. Send someone to take me back to Riverford!”

“Mercer, you bastard. You can’t take away my freedom!”

But every time she said these things on the phone, she didn’t get a response. Calla felt like he wasn’t even listening to her.

When she finally grew tired of shouting into the phone and stopped speaking, a calm voice would come from the other end.

“The air in the mountains is good. It’s perfect for your body and mind. Consider all that shouting as a form of lung exercise.”

“Mercer, you’ll die a horrible death!” Calla always screamed this curse at him. However, he never heard it as he always managed to hang up just before she could finish.

Eventually, in her fury, Calla smashed the only phone in the villa.

After two days of silence, Calla finally thought of a way to counter Mercer: a hunger strike. He might not care about her well–being, but he couldn’t ignore the life of the child she was carrying.

So she put her plan into action. For an entire day, she didn’t eat or drink anything. She endured it even though her stomach protested fiercely.

She refused to be kept like a bird in a cage. Besides, her mother and sister might call the police if they couldn’t find her.

In the evening, Jasmine brought food to Calla’s bedside, pleading, “Mrs. Garland, please eat something. If you don’t, the baby won’t be able to manage.”

Calla ignored her. She had lost count of how many times Jasmine had come to beg her to eat that day.

Calla was actually near her limit. She could feel the baby moving inside her. Fearing she might give in, she didn’t dare look at the food Jasmine brought.

Seeing that Calla remained unmoving, Jasmine began to cry, “Mrs. Garland, Mr. Garland will blame me if he finds out. If anything happens to you, how will I explain it to him?”

Upon hearing this, Calla nearly fainted from anger. So Jasmine hadn’t informed Mercer that she hadn’t eaten all day.

Calla might starve to death by the time Mercer found out!
