“Doesn’t Calla have a boyfriend she has been dating for a few years? Maybe they’re getting married soon,” Jeanne said.

Peggy shook her head immediately. “That guy broke up with her and went overseas a few months ago.”

“Then whose baby is she carrying?” Jeanne asked surprisedly.

Peggy thought for a while. Then, an idea formed in her head.

“I dare say that the origin of her baby is probably quite suspicious. Getting pregnant out of wedlock is a serious issue for our company.

“Besides, the company is being restructured. There’s no way the company would keep a pregnant woman who might take maternity leave at any time and won’t be able to focus

on work.”

“You mean…” Jeanne frowned as she looked at Peggy.

Peggy whispered in Jeanne’s ear, “Aren’t you in the finance department too? Find proof of her pregnancy as soon as possible. Then, report her to the HR department. I’ll be able to get a reward for you with my connection with the HR manager.”

“I do not have a grudge against Calla. What’s in this for me? Isn’t this just a personal vendetta for you?” Jeanne didn’t think it was worth the trouble, so she didn’t want to do

Peggy frowned. “Are you dumb? There are seven people in your department, and only three will keep their jobs.

“The Iron Lady will definitely have a spot. Then, Calla takes the next one because she’s the most experienced besides the Iron Lady. The one remaining spot will be between you and Alicia. You only have a 50% chance of keeping your job

“If Calla gets laid off, both of you will get to keep your jobs. That would mean you’ll definitely be able to keep your job. Besides, your effort to get Calla kicked out will be noted by the HR department. You might even get a better position after the merger.“1

Jeanne smiled. “You’re so quick–witted. Why didn’t I think of that?”

“But this plan won’t work if we can’t find evidence to support our claims.”

“Don’t worry. I’ll keep an eye on her when we’re in the office. She’ll definitely slip up eventually,” Jeanne said viciously.

Peggy smiled in satisfaction.

At night, Calla sat down at a worn–down table with and Carol

her sister Zoo Chor

for dinner.

Coral suddenly said, “Calla, Tasha found someone to introduce a boyfriend to you. You

can meet with him this weekend.”

Calla was taken aback. She noticed Zoey signaling to her with her eye. Then, she came up with an excuse to turn Carol down.

“Mom, the company is going through a restructuring. I’m very busy with work. I might be

laid off if I don’t do well at work.”

Carol started to nag again. “Calla, you’re not that young anymore. It’s time to think. about marriage. It’s very important to get married to someone good.”

“Mom, I think it’s better for me to rely on myself. If I married someone like Rudy.

Calla stopped talking immediately when she saw that Carol’s expression had darkened.

Carol set down her cutlery and said with resentment, “I want you to have a better life because I made a mistake back then. That Peggy girl is in the same company as you. You mustn’t let her win. You have to have a better marriage than her. Make me proud!!

Calla and Zoey lowered their heads when they saw Carol becoming emotional.

Carol added, “The man Tasha got someone to introduce is a professor working at Southera University. He comes from a well–off family and is quite good–looking. It’s really hard to find such a high–value man!”

“Mom, isn’t that the university I’m studying at?” Zoey asked.

“That’s right. He works at your school. His name is… Harlan Engler!” Carol said as she tapped on her head.

“That’s Mr. Engler!” Zoey said excitedly.

“You know him?” Carol asked.

“He’s really famous in the university. He’s very dignified and elegant. I always have to go. to his lectures early, or else all the seats would be taken,” Zoey said with a hint of admiration in her eyes.

“You hear that? This is definitely the right man for you.” Carol smiled.

Calla didn’t know what to say. She didn’t have a choice. She had to go meet with Harlan for Carol’s sake.
