On a quiet evening a few days later, Calla sat in a charming steakhouse as she waited. for her blind date.

Honestly, she didn’t really feel for professors. She was just there to go through the motions. So, she thought long and hard for a plan.

At 7:00 pm sharp, a man in a white shirt, gray slacks, and gold–framed glasses sat down. in front of Calla.

“Hi. My name is Harlan Engler. I’m 31 years old and a local. I currently work as a lecturer at Southera University.”

Harlan’s introduction was short and simple.

Calla threw him a couple of glances. Then, she lifted her chin and said, “I have a few questions for you.”

Harlan was a very elegant man. He exuded the temperament of a scholar. He probably wasn’t a snobbish academic.

Calla really didn’t want to agitate the man. But she wouldn’t be able to break free if she didn’t do so.

“I’ll answer your questions to the best of my abilities.” Harlan smiled, revealing his pearly whites.

“Do you have a house?” Calla glanced at him.

While Riverford wasn’t a provincial capital, it was more prosperous and developed than the provincial capital. The housing prices were sky–high as well.

A young person had to be very well–off or truly capable to own an apartment that was over 1000 square feet.

Harlan smiled at the question. “I’m currently living in a 2000–square–foot duplex.”

Calla was stunned. She thought to herself, “His whole family probably chipped in for the down payment of that house. It’s probably in the middle of nowhere, too.”

Then, she asked, “Do you own an Audi A6?”

Harlan’s smile widened even more. “I’m currently driving a Land Rover. If you prefer an Audi, I can switch to that!”

Calla was at a loss for words. She opened her mouth, but no words came out. On the other hand, Harlan looked at her with an amused expression.

Calla steeled herself and said, “I’m not a virgin!”

She stared at him as she said that. She figured he had to care about that..

Harlan looked out the window and smiled. “I don’t care about that.”

Calla was immediately triggered by his words. She slammed her hand on the table and said, “Are you crazy? You have a nice house and an expensive car. You’re handsome and working as a lecturer. Why would you want a woman like me?”

“What’s wrong with that?” Harlan said as he stared at Calla.

“My dad ran away with his mistress when I was young. I’m from a single–parent household. My mom and my sister rely on me to provide for them.

“My ex–boyfriend told me I’m not feminine enough, and he went overseas with a wealthy

woman. I…”

Calla blurted everything out at once. Then, she didn’t know what else to say.

“Anything else?” Harlan smiled at her.

“No.” Calla lowered her head and started drinking her glass of juice. She had already listed out all her flaws. Why wasn’t he leaving?

She had the urge to tell him that she was already pregnant and that she was just there at her mother’s behest.

But then she thought, if he were to tell the matchmaker about that, and the matchmaker were to tell Tasha, Carol would definitely find out if Tasha knew about it.

So, she held her tongue and didn’t tell him about that.

“You’re the most unique woman I’ve ever met. Honestly, I hate blind dates, too, but I don’t mind making new friends. Why don’t we start as friends? Harlan said as he handed Calla his business card,

She took the card and ate the meal paid for by Harlan. The two of them got along pretty well. It was always good to have more friends. The most important thing was she did what Carol wanted her to do.

After she got home, Carol grabbed her and started to ask questions.

She batted her eyelashes and said, “Mom, I wasn’t good enough for him. So, it didn’t pan

out.”

“How could that be? Did you sabotage the meeting yourself?” Carol got worked up when she heard that it didn’t work out.

Zoey smiled when she heard what Calla said.

“Mom, he’s such a high–value man. There are probably loads of women chasing after

him. I’m not that pretty or talented. It’s quite c
