Chapter 79
Christine gently said, “Lindsay, what story would you like to hear?”
Lindsay took a storybook from the table beside the bed and handed it to Christine.
Christine looked at it and saw it was “Little Tadpoles Look for Mommy.”
Christine embraced Lindsay, who lay in her armIS.
Christine tenderly told the story, radiating a gentleness like a mother.
“There was a group of little tadpoles in the pond, with big heads, blackish–gray bodies, and long tails, happily swimming around.
“One day, Mama Duck brought her children to swim in the pond. The little tadpoles saw the baby ducklings following their mother, swimming in the water.
“The little tadpoles swam up to Mama Duck and shouted, ‘Mommy, Mommy!”
“Mama Duck said, ‘I am not your mommy. Your mommy has two big eyes on top of her head and a wide, big mouth. Go and find her yourselves.
“The little tadpoles swam and swam, and they saw Mama Carp teaching her baby carps how to catch food. Excitedly, they called out, ‘Mommy! Mama Carp said, ‘Your mommy has four legs. Go over there and find her!“”
Christine continued, “The little tadpoles swam and swam. After a few days, they grew two front legs. They saw a big turtle swimming with its four legs and hurriedly caught up, calling. ‘Mommy, Mommy!”
“The big turtle laughed and said, ‘I am not your mommy. Your mommy has two big eyes on top of her head and wears a green suit. Go over there and find her!”
“The little tadpoles swam and swam. After a few days, their tails became shorter. They swam to the side of a lotus flower and saw a big frog squatting on a lotus leaf. It wore a green suit, showed its white belly, had a pair of big eyes, and a wide, big mouth. It was singing ribbit, ribbit.’
“The little tadpoles swam over and asked, ‘Excuse me, are you our mommy?”
“Mama Frog lowered her head and smiled, saying, ‘Silly children, I am your mommy! You have already grown into little frogs. Come up here quickly! They kicked their hind legs, leaped forward, and jumped onto the lotus leaf.
“At some point, the little frogs‘ tails had disappeared. They followed their mommy to catch pests. Finally, they lived happily every day.”
Lindsay’s favorite story was “Little Tadpoles Look for Mommy” because the little tadpoles found their mommy at the end of the story.
Just like the tadpole, she had found her mommy as well.
Milo and Oliver said she had the same eyes as their mommy. Their mommy looked so much like her, so she must be her
mommy.
But why didn’t Mommy recognize her?
Was it because she was like the tadpole in the fairy tale, not yet transformed into a little frog, so her mommy couldn’t recognize her?
She had to grow up quickly so that her mommy could recognize her.
For Christine, the story of “Little Tadpoles Look for Mommy” was ordinary, but for some reason, telling it to Lindsay made her suddenly feel a bit sad.
Lindsay was the little tadpole, but she was not a frog. She was a duck mommy, a carp mommy, or a turtle mommy, anything but a tadpole mommy.
Christine gently touched Lindsay’s hair. Poor child. She was like the little tadpole in the fairy tale, searching for her mommy everywhere.
Christine hoped Lindsay could find her mommy, just like the little tadpole in the fairy tale.
While Christine was telling the story to Lindsay, Randall walked out. She thought he had left because he found it boring. Christine secretly rejoiced that he left. It was better that way because she felt uncomfortable with him around. However, she didn’t expect that when she was about to tell another story, Randall came in with his laptop. He then calmly started working at Lindsay’s desk in the room.
It seemed like he had no intention of leaving-
Christine was speechless. However, she was in his place. Hence, she could only treat him like he was invisible.
Christine continued to hold Lindsay and tell her stories, keeping her company. Meanwhile, Randall sat at the nearby desk

and worked. The three of them spent an ordinary yet heartwarming afternoon together.
Christine looked at her phone and realized it was already 4:20 in the afternoon. It was time to pick up Oliver and Milo.
So she spoke to Lindsay, “Lindsay, we’re stopping here today. I have to leave.”
Upon hearing that Christine was leaving. Lindsay shook her head vigorously and tightly grabbed Christine’s hand, refusing to let her go. When Mommy was around, she didn’t feel heavy–headed or have difficulty breathing, but when Mommy said she had to leave, her head hurt, and she even had trouble breathing.
Lindsay held on to Christine and shook her head, her eyes filled with sadness.
Christine comforted her. “Lindsay, I’m sorry. I have to pick up Oliver and Milo. They have finished school, and no one is picking them up. They would feel very lonely at the kindergarten.”
Upon hearing that Mommy had to pick up big brothers. Lindsay let go of Christine’s hand.
She knew she couldn’t be unreasonable. If Mommy didn’t go to kindergarten, no one would pick up big brothers, and she couldn’t let them feel pitiful.
Randall saw that Lindsay didn’t want Christine to leave but still obediently let go of her hand.
In that instant, Randall felt like a needle had pierced his heart.
So he suddenly stopped his work, stood up, and said. “You stay here. I’ll go pick up the kids.”
Randall spoke casually as if he was going to pick up his own children.
Christine stared at him and was surprised. Did he say that he wanted to pick up Oliver and Milo?
It seemed inappropriate since they had no familial relationship.
So she politely declined, saying, “Mr. Reeves, thank you for your kindness. I’ll go pick them up myself. After all, I need to take my sons home, so there’s no need for an extra detour. I’ll come to see Lindsay earlier tomorrow.”
“You all can stay at the Reeves family’s house tonight, and you can accompany Lindsay. I’ll bring your kids over.”
Randall commanded, leaving no room for negotiation.
This left Christine completely speechless. Randall actually asked her to stay overnight at the Reeves family’s house with Oliver and Milo.
This was even more inappropriate.
“Mr. Reeves, there’s no need for the trouble. I’ll go pick them up myself.”
After saying that, Christine stood up, intending to leave. However, Randall held her down.
He whispered in her ear, “Don’t make me tie you up. It wouldn’t look good if the children see it.”
Christine was stunned. Was he threatening her? She had never encountered such arrogance.
In an instant, Randall changed his tone again, appearing gentle and harmless. He said, “Lindsay is feeling very uncomfortable due to her illness. She wants you to be with her and also wants her two big brothers, right, Lindsay?”
Lindsay heard Daddy inviting Mommy and big brothers to stay at their house, and she was overjoyed.
She nodded vigorously with a bright smile on her face..
“Lindsay, you stay well. Daddy will go pick up big brothers.”
Randall said and then looked at Christine with his cold gaze. “You stay with Lindsay. I’ll go get the kids.”
After speaking Randall left, giving her no chance to refuse, and walked away.
Christine watched his departing figure. When Randall said he was going to pick up the children, he sounded as if he was picking up his own kids.
She did not think that he was a loving person.
He probably wanted to use her and her sons because he believed they would help improve Lindsay’s condition.
It seemed that she needed to find the right time to have a proper conversation with him.
Lindsay’s condition needed her mommy the most!
