The Marriage That Never Was (Leonard and Lisa )

Chapter 69

Chapter 69

Leonard looked at the young lady in his arms. Lisa’s almond-shaped eyes showed confusion as her fluttering eyelashes cast a shadow on her cheeks. She resembled a cute kitten that had just woken up.

Leonard could not help teasing her, “Hey, sleepyhead, you’re finally awake.”

Suddenly, Lisa remembered everything. A wave of embarrassment washed over her. “Put me down.”

Leonard put her in a chair against the wall. Since only a few people were in the emergency registration area, he walked over to sign up and make the payment. The whole process only took two minutes.

When he returned with the registration form, Lisa rolled her eyes and teased, “Isn’t your family wealthy around here? You- CEO of the Parker Corporation-have businesses all over the world.

“In TV shows, when a person like you walks into a hospital, the director or some famous expert would come and greet you personally. Am I right? Yet here you are, lining up to register.”

Leonard watched her rosy lips move up and down. He found her words amusing and did not know what to say for a moment. He then replied, “You’ve been watching too many shows. This isn’t some urgent, life-threatening illness.

“Don’t worry. You won’t die even if I had to wait in line until tomorrow.”

Lisa glared at him.

Leonard continued casually, “This is the emergency room. Who would willingly come to the hospital at this hour if it’s not urgent? The shows you watch aren’t realistic at all. Having the director or an expert tending to me would waste medical

resources.

“We should wait in line like everyone else. Can’t you see the patients next to us are in worse condition than you are?”

Taken aback, Lisa glanced at the woman beside her, who was clutching her stomach and bent over in pain. She held on to her husband’s hand as she endured her pain. “Why is it not my turn yet? This pain is about to kill me.”

Lisa fared much better in comparison. Although, she was surprised to hear such words from Leonard’s mouth. Perhaps she had never understood him before.

A few minutes later, it was Lisa’s turn. The doctor on duty was a woman. When she saw Lisa’s face, she instantly scowled at Leonard. “Is this your boyfriend? Did he cause these injuries on your face?”

Leonard was furious but could not retort since he did cause at least one of those injuries.

Noting his silence, the doctor knew she was right and growled, “How could you beat your girlfriend? Even her lips are swollen. You were being too hard on her.

“Miss, have you called the police? Men who resort to violence should be kicked out the door immediately. There’s a difference between zero and countless instances of domestic violence.”

Leonard could not bear the embarrassment. He had never felt so humiliated in his life.

“Doctor, he didn’t cause these injuries,” Lisa said, “I got into a fight with someone earlier today. I have injuries on my body,

too.”

“Oh, I’m sorry for misreading the situation,” the doctor quickly apologized.

Leonard pursed his thin lips and looked at Lisa in surprise. He did not expect her to defend him. Inexplicably, a slight heat rose

to his cheeks.

The doctor stood up and asked, “Where else do you feel pain?”

“My arm and thigh.”

“Take off your pants and lie on the bed. I’ll assess the injuries.”

Lisa froze momentarily, then looked at Leonard in embarrassment.

“What’s wrong? You aren’t worried about your boyfriend looking at you, right?” the doctor teased.

Lisa denied, “He’s not my boyfriend.”

The doctor smiled. “Since he’s so handsome, you’d better claim him before some other girl steals him away.” Lisa felt embarrassed, while Leonard said, “That’s unnecessary. I’m already her husband.”
