The Marriage That Never Was (Leonard and Lisa )

Chapter 49

Chapter 49

“I’m tired of hearing you say that we live off your son’s money. My mother works tirelessly, cares for your son, and raises your granddaughter. Does none of that matter? She works harder than anyone else!”

“It’s natural for women to take care of the house. Quit complaining!” Norma fired back with anger, her face flushed. However, she sensed Lisa’s rage and muttered a curse before retreating into her room.

“Why are you hiding? If I catch you insulting my mother again, your whole family will suffer!” Lisa persisted while Isabella grabbed her and pleaded, “Please, stop it, Lisa.”

“Mom, can’t you stand up for yourself?” Lisa snapped. “How could you let her insult you like that?”

Isabella sighed bitterly, “She’s not wrong. I can’t earn money for the family.”

Lisa was speechless. Sebastian was constantly manipulating Isabella, and it was wearing on her.

“Mom, it’s not like you can’t earn money. You have a college degree. It’s just that you dedicated yourself to caring for the family and stopped working after marrying Sebastian. Plus, you cook well and keep the house clean.

“Even if you work as a housekeeper, you can still earn a decent monthly income. How can you say you’re useless?” Lisa

insisted.

“Working as a housekeeper might make people look down on me. It’s a matter of image,” Isabella replied.

“That’s nonsense! You’re earning money with your own skills. Ignore what Sebastian says. He just wants to put you down and boss you around,” Lisa encouraged.

Isabella kept her head down and remained silent.

Lisa felt a headache coming on and decided to change the topic. “Mom, doesn’t the old lady live with her eldest son? Why is she here?”

“Lisa, please be more polite and stop calling her an old lady,” Isabella whispered. “Her grandson’s wife is pregnant, so your uncle and his wife went to take care of her. No one else is around to look after Norma, so she came here.”

Lisa frowned. “Are you saying she’ll be staying here for a while?”

Isabella sighed. “Sebastian is her son, so it’s only natural for him to care for her.”

“I know, but the old lady isn’t easy to get along with.” Lisa knew Norma was the type of person who bullied the weak and feared the strong.

When Norma’s eldest son married a civil ser vant with a good family background, she behaved well and dared not say anything harsh. However, she would unleash various nasty comments when it came to Isabella.

The problem was that Sebastian supported his mother. In the past, Lisa and Leslie were there to support Isabella. However, since the stepsisters married and moved out, Norma tormented Isabella.

“It’s okay. Don’t worry about me. Just take care of yourself.” Isabella clumsily comforted her daughter, “By the way, how’d you come here today?”

Lísa finally remembered her purpose for coming and took her mother to the yard to see the new car. “Mom, I bought a new car,”

Isabella widened her mouth in shock and became teary-eyed. “That’s great. You have a car now, too!”

“Mom, I’ll buy a new house after I get divorced. Then you can divorce Sebastian and move out if you want,” Lisa whispered. “ From now on, I won’t let you suffer anymore.”

“Don’t spout nonsense,” Isabella hurriedly said. “I don’t want to divorce Sebastian. He has flaws, but I’ll be content if he doesn’t turn out like your drunk and abusive father. Besides, we’ve been together for over ten years. There’s still some emotional connection.”
