Chapter 38: Call Me Mommy
“Our next performers are Jake Morgan and Liam Wright. They are going to play a piano duet of Heart and Soul by Mozart! Lotis
vive the boys a round of applause!” An announcer said while directing everyone’s attention to the side of the elevated platform.
Hoots and applause could be heard as Liam and Jake walked onto the stage in their formal attires, their heads occasionally
turning to the audience, both looking for their loved ones.
Liam noticed how Jake was waving at his parents. He also examined the audience in search of Scarlett and Kaleb. He smiled.
seeing his grandmother Samantha, his uncle Boris and Kaleb already there, but a frown easily formed on his face realizing that
Scarlett was not present. It was the night of Liam’s recital and everyone was gathered in the school’s auditorium. Two groups
have already rendered their performance. Liam and Jake’s presentations were next. while Jake was walking to the piano, Liam
remained at the side, his eyes wandering to the door and back to his father. He speculated, ‘Where is Scarlett?’
It was as if his father understood his growing concern and he saw Kaleb point at the empty seat next to him. Then Kaleb pointed
to his watch. Liam nodded, understanding that Scarlett was busy and was probably running late.
He wistfully walked to the piano, where his friend was already settled. He sat next to Jake and, before getting started; he glanced
back to the crowd again. Hurt flashed through his face, but just as he turned to the music instrument, the door to the auditorium
opened.
Liam’s head snapped back to the main entrance, and a smile became painted on his face. There he saw Scarlett, in a frenzy,
trying to find Kaleb. When she found her seat, her eyes landed on Liam.
Waters welled up in Liam’s eyes before a bright smile reflected on his face. He waved eagerly in Scarlett’s direction, and she
waved back. From where he sat, he could not hear Scarlett, but he could make up the words she formed in her mouth, “Good
Luck! I love you!”
Then she gave a thumbs up. That was all he needed for a confidence boost. He turned to Jake joyfully before looking for their
teacher, giving a cue that they were ready to perform.
In the next few minutes, only the sound of sweet melodies could be heard, coming from the piano up on stage. Jake and Liam
were in synch, their fingers precisely following the keys.
Meanwhile, from the crowd, Scarlett had just landed in her seat. After greeting Samantha and Boris, she accepted a peck from
Kaleb.
“What took you so long?” Kaleb asked.
“There were lots of oppositions and Joy was barely meeting the deadlines,” she explained. “Then I lost track of time. Sorry.”
“It’s fine. I’m glad you made it just in time. It looked like, he was about to cry,” Kaleb pointed out.
All throughout Liam’s and Jake’s duet piano recital, Kaleb’s party hushed to observe their play. At the end of it, Scarlett stood up,
clapping her hands. Her eyes glistened as she praised Liam from her seat.
Scarlett could see Liam’s delight in her commendations. Tears were threatening to fall from his eyes, but he maintained the smile
on his face. The sight of Liam, utterly touched by her praise, made Scarlett feel extra guilty about arriving late. She swore she
would make it up to the boy, one way or another.
When the recital was finally over, Liam rushed to where his family was.
“There is my boy! Congrats, buddy, you did – Kaleb’s words were cut off. Liam just went past him! He turned behind him with a
frown, but soon his expression changed to an amused one, seeing his son in the arms of Scarlett.
“Looks like my grandson loves Scarlett very much,” Samantha remarked. Even she did not get the first hug.
Liam was still savoring Scarlett’s embrace. He said to her, “I was scared you would not make it, Scarlett.”
“But I did. I’m sorry, Liam. I got caught up with work and I lost track of time,” Scarlett revealed. She pulled away, kissing Liam’s
cheek, and pleaded, “Will you forgive me?”
Liam nodded and said, “I forgive you, Scarlett.”
the young boy looked backup at his father, and then, he observed his friends. He clearly saw how Jake and Charlotte were both
received by their parents and he yearned for the same. He returned his attention to Scarlett and said to her, “TU
forgive you if you will be my mommy soon.”

Seeing how his father was walking ahead of them, Liam pulled Scarlett’s hand. While scarlett turned to him, he heard her ask,
“What’s wrong, Liam?”
Scarlett, don’t you want to be my mommy?” Liam inquired, his eyes piercing into scarlett’s espresso onts, his hand gripping
tighter and tighter with a sich, Scarlett tried to explain, “Liam, it’s easier said than done.”
“Don’t you love me?” Liam asked again, his expression becoming melancholy.
Scarlett turned to a seat in the lobby and pulled Liam over. As she sat on the couch, she leveled with the boy and sought,”
Where is this coming from? You know I love you. It’s just that there are requirements for me to be your mommy?”
“What requirements?” Liam asked while his brows met. “Love isn’t enough?”.
Scarlett was utterly perplexed. She did not know how best to explain the technicalities of being his mommy. She thought,’ Come
to think of it, what is holding me back? Children can have multiple mommies, like godparents.’
“You know what? You are right. We don’t have to wait for me and your daddy to marry.” She cupped Liam’s face and suggested,
“From now on, you can call me Mommy.”
Liam’s face lit up. His eyes glistened as he probed, “Really? I can call you, mommy?”
He was quick to embrace Scarlett, his little hands circling around her neck. He announced, “I can’t wait to tell Jake and Charlotte!
And Troy too!”
Pulling away from the hold, he went on and on, “I’ll tell my uncle Boris tomorrow and I’ll tell my teacher, uncle Archer, I’ll call my
uncle Kyle, my aunt Gabby, my aunt Kate...”
Scarlett felt her face burn, and the heat was going up to her ears. She felt ashamed to make these assumptions, but while she
was wondering if Kaleb would be fine with Liam calling her mommy, a male’s voice caught her attention.
“Scarlett.” She turned to meet a pair of honey-brown eyes, looking at her intensely.
It was Luca James. He was in his suit, his face was a little flushed and he was standing two meters away from Scarlett and Liam.
“Luca?” Scarlett turned to find Kaleb, but he was nowhere in sight. She could only assume he went to meet one of the hotel
managers or he went straight to the penthouse, knowing they would follow.
“Scarlett, we need to talk,” Luca suggested.
Glancing back at Luca, Scarlett asked, “Luca, what are you doing here? What do we need to talk about? If it’s about my father’s
will, it’s rather late in the evening – ”
“It’s not about the will,” Luca revealed.
“Mommy? Who is he?” Liam said, his eyes scanning Luca up and down.
Scarlett carefully moved Luca behind her. She replied without looking at the boy, “Just an old friend, Liam.”
“Mommy? Really, Scarlett?” Luca said while looking disturbed at the idea. “You are willing to mother someone else’s child? What
about me, Scarlett? What about me?”
Scarlett was stunned beyond words, but she could tell that whatever conversation they were about to have must exclude Liam.
She proposed, “I don’t know why you are here, Luca, but if you really want to talk, let’s do it another time. Liam needs to rest – ”
“I just want to iron things out, Scarlett. I realized I never gave you the chance to explain things. So now I am here. I want
answers and I want them right now,” Luca said with conviction.
For a second, Scarlett was rendered speechless. She wound up laughing as she replied, “Really, Luca? You want to talk now
after throwing away our years of friendship?” “Tsk. Tsk. Tsk. I’m sorry, but... You are... a year too late.”
