I Fell For The Boy His Daddy Was A Bonus

Chapter 37: Love The Ring

Flashing her left hand in front of Kaleb, Scarlett asked, “What is this?”
“Woah, that is some diamond ring. Whoever gave you that is a man worth keeping, a man worth loving, and a man worth
marrying,” Kaleb said before a sly grin became painted on his face. “You are a very lucky woman.”
Scarlett was ready to have an argument with him, to point out how the ring was too extravagant, considering how she will merely
work as a paralegal at a law firm, and how the ring would not bind her in any form of wedding commitment, at least not yet.
However, with his response, she found herself chuckling, her face turning red.
“What? You did say to put a ring on it,” he reminded, his half-naked body leaning on the door frame of Liam’s door.
“Yeah, but. I did not expect it to be given the next day, and at the way you did too,” Scarlett replied reluctantly. “All the more, not
this big, not this fancy. How much does this thing even cost? Why do I feel like it cost more than my life?”
“Everything okay, daddy? Scarlett?” Behind them, Liam was still in bed, listening to their conversation.
“Everything is fine, son. I gave Scarlett a gift, and she was just too surprised,” Kaleb said while grabbing Scarlett’s left hand.
Returning his attention to Scarlett, he suggested, “Kitten, don’t be ridiculous. Nothing is more precious to me than your life. You
can accept the ring, however, you like it; as an engagement ring or a simple gift, I’ll leave it up to you to decide. And don’t worry,
this ring is not expensive at all.”
“Really? It looks so expensive,” Scarlett remarked, observing how the main diamond was roughly around ten millimeters in
diameter. Not only that, the ring itself was embedded with pink diamonds all over.
“It just costs mm something, something with zeros,” Kaleb replied, and he purposely ate his word as he described.
“Really?” Scarlett doubted. “I’m particularly interested in how many zeros are involved in buying this ring – Kaleb. I can’t. This is
too much. I can’t wear it – ”
“Why not?” Kaleb asked with a frown.
“I didn’t expect it and we certainly need to have a proper talk about it.”
“Okay, I get it.” Kaleb raised his hand in surrender. “My sister Kenzie always told me that diamonds are a girl’s best friend. And
that sometimes, they’d do anything to have it. You are telling me one thing, but in reality, you want... a bigger diamond.”

Shocked, Scarlett countered, “What? No. That’s not what I meant -”
“Then why won’t you wear it?” Kaleb asked. “You must be... unsatisfied.”
“No, I just don’t want to attract too much attention at work with a -”
“You think the diamond is not big enough? I‘ll call the jewelry designer and have a bigger one made. This one is just an eighteen-
carat diamond. I’ll order the biggest one for you.”
“What? No. Kaleb -”
“How about I changed the base of the ring to platinum?” He offered. “That would be grand.”
“No, Kaleb -”
“You want more pink diamonds?” He asked.
“What?” She glanced back at the ring. She wondered where else to put more diamonds on it. It was just too much!
“Or did you want the rarest kind, red?” Kaleb sought. “I’U have all mountains of Australia mined for a rare red diamond for
my kitten.”
Scarlett, “...”
“Scarlett, look. I’m not a hard man to appeal to. If you want something grander and bigger, all you need to do is ask. For you, my
kitten, I will buy you the world. How about a thirty-carat diamond ring? You‘d be proud to wear an eight million dollar ring on your
finger. What do you say?” Kaleb suggested, his hands resting on Scarlett’s shoulders.
Scarlett, “...”
A hiss left Kaleb’s lips, and he revealed, “You know, my sister owns the Pink Star Diamond ring. It is said to be the most
expensive in Europe. I’m willing to trade my entire inheritance so you can have the ring on your finger – ”
“Stop,” Scarlett said, her palm facing Kaleb. She forced a smile and glanced back down at her diamond ring. She said, “I like this
ring.”
“Yeah?” Kaleb asked, his smile reaching his ears.

Scarlett raised her left hand and suggested, “This ring, right here, fits my personality. It’s quite humble to a ring that is equal to
your entire inheritance, Kaleb.” She pointed to the ring and added, “I like this ring.”
“And you’ll wear it?” Kaleb asked. “Never take it off? Because if you do, that means you don’t like it.”
Scarlett nodded, saying, “I. LOVE. THIS RING.”
“Good. Now, get ready for work,” Kaleb said with a wink.
Hours later
*Scarlett Barnes?” The HR associate named Nancy said in a flat tone. “Welcome to your first day at the Longhills and Hogans
Associates.”
They were standing in the reception area, where two other new employees were waiting for their orientation. Nancy handed a
paper and an ID badge to Scar lett, saying, “I don’t know how you got in, and how you convinced Misses Hogans, but I have my
eye on you.”
“And by the way, because of you, I was given a written warning. You are something,” Nancy added.
“Why blame it on me? Blame it on you for accepting bribes from Luca James. I’m surprised how you did not get fired at all,”
Scarlett countered, her voice raised as she accepted the documents and her ID.
When Nancy realized she was drawing attention to herself, she zipped her mouth and announced to the new employees, *
Everyone will be attending a two-hour orientation in the main conterence room with me before you go to your first paralegal
work.”
Turning to Scarlett, Nancy revealed, “Miss Barnes, for your first week, you are going to get assigned to the patent and trademark
team.”
Two hours later.
Arriving at the trademark and patent team, Scarlett sucked in a breath. She pushed open the door, and all eyes landed on her.
One particular attorney caught her eye.
“Scarlett Barnes?” It was Joy Young, her classmate back in law school.
“Joy?” Scarlett asked back. “You – you work here?”

“I am one of the attorneys for the trademark and patent team, yes... My god, I never thought I‘d see you again. So you are the
new paralegal?” Joy asked, and Scarlett nockled.
Joy was a small woman, coming from an Asian family. Back in law school, Scarlett remembered her being constantly around
other Asian students. Joy invited Scarlett to follow her to her office, and it was there where they resumed their chat.
“I know we were not close. You were always around Luca and after he graduated, you were constantly busy with your part time
job,” Joy began. “And to be honest, I was always jealous of you for having Luca James, but after I heard of what happened, a big
part of me wanted to find you and just give you a hug.”
Waiving her finger, she added, “No one can judge a brokenhearted woman. Nope! And with the very little knowledge I have
about you, I doubt you were capable of assault.”
Scarlett forced a smile, saying, “Thank you, Joy. I appreciate it. I’m glad. At least one classmate of mine from law school believes
me.”
“Pfft.” Dismissing her words with her hand, Joy said, “I’m sure there were others. They were just afraid of Luca. His father was
very influential. I’m sure you knew that already.”
“Speaking of Luca.” Joy said out of nowhere. She smir ked and came up with a suggestion, “Do you want to do a little payback?”
“What payback?” Scarlett asked.
Joy went to her desk and took out a file. She handed it to Scarlett and said, “Check out who filed for a trademark?”
Scarlett opened the folder and was stunned to see James and Powel Law Firm’s slogan on the application. She pressed her lips
together before asking, “I can’t believe they never filed for this slogan. They have used these lines even while I was working for
the firm.”
“And guess what? They have ‘Your Fight Is Ours’, but in one of our affiliate law firms, they have Your Fight, Our Fight’ and their
slogan and it is attached to the law firm’s logo,” Troy revealed. He squinted and asked, “Do you... want to help me with the
opposition?”
Scarlett swiftly nodded and said, “Oh, I do. I miss writing those!”
Joy laughed and warned, “When they come back for a settlement, which I’m pretty sure they will, you’ll be the point of contact for
this, Scarlett. Are you ready to let Luca know where you are working?”

“Definitely! More than ever!” She declared.
“Oh, boy!” Joy announced, “He is going to be so pissed finding out that Scarlett Barnes is working for a rival firm.”
“Let him! I’m ready for him,” Scarlett said.
“Like the confidence. Your new boyfriend must be some man, judging by the rock on your finger,” Joy said with a wink. “So tell
me, who is this man?”
Scarlett flushed. She looked down at the ring on her finger and said, “Someone... someone special. For now, I want to be selfish
and keep him to myself.”
“Oooh,” Joy said. “Don’t worry. I’m not going to steal your man.” Scarlett laughed. She replied, “I’ve heard that line before.”
