Chapter 49 – James
Several minutes later, more wolves pour down into the cells, running at were speed. One of them is Head Commander
Sophia. They’re down there for a while before two guards bring up the chick that Oakley nearly dragged down there. Then
several other wolves come up out of the dungeon. One of them is Oakley
She’s holding on to the hand of a tall male and next to another male who stares at her intently. He seems to call her away.
but there’s so much going on that we can’t hear exactly what they say. Oakley looks at the guy she’s holding hands with, k*sses him and then follows the other guy away.
Right now, there’s too many wolves around for us to follow her. But the look in her eyes when she k*ssed that male says that he’s important to her. Likely, he’s her second chance mate. One that loves and cares for her. One that she loves and cares for.
At least she’s got someone that’s looking out for her. Someone who makes her happy
We should go, I mindlink Jack
He looks like he wants to object, but that only lasts for about a second. He nods. Yeah. You’re right. he links back.
He leads me through the maze of alleyways and buildings to the exit. By now, the delivery truck is gone and we’ve gotta
hoof it back to the hotel.
us
“We’re not getting her back are we? Jack asks. His tone is sullen, but he never looks at me as we wait for our Uber to find
“No. We’re not. I think that guy she k*ssed was her second chance mate. I sigh. “She’s not coming back. I doubt that we’ll
see her again.”
He nods and is quiet for a moment. Then he punches the brick wall that we’re standing against, leaving a huge crater-like
hole in it and a blood imprint of his knuckles. “F UCK!” he screams before punching the wall again.
“Jack! Get it together. She wouldn’t want you to do this,” I say grabbing his shoulder.
He just shrugs me off, screaming into my face, “It doesn’t f ucking matter what she wants, does it James? She’s not coming back. You just said so yourself. She won’t come back to us. She never will. He hits the wall one more time and then slumps against it. A loud so b comes out of him. His grief pours out of him.
Tears wet my cheeks as well. Jack’s grief might be louder, but mine’s just as poignant. We let our sister down in so many ways, but she was our glue, our rock, our lighthouse in the storm of life. And to know that we wouldn’t have her there anymore…..
it was heartbreaking
hug as tightly as I can.
I grab Jack and turn him to me, wrapping him in a hug
“I know, Jack. I know.” I hold him as we both cry.
“We’ve lost her!” he wails. “She’s gone!”
“I know,” I say, stifling a so b. “I know”

It takes a long while for Jack to calm down.
with the corner of his shirt. We climb into the back of the car and the guy looks at us like he isn’t sure exactly what to do or say
I mean, what do you say when two giant a ss werewolves climb into the back of your car and look like they’ve been bawling their
eyes out?
We hage to tell Levi and Father. I link Jack
Chapter 49 – James
I know. He links back. His tone is monotone, like he’s emptied out all of his emotions.
I mindlink Levi asking him to meet us in our room and let Father know that he’s coming. The rest of the trip back to the hotel is silent as both Jack and I grieve the loss of our sister.
Levi meets us at the door to our room. “What’s going on? What happened to Oakley? Did she agree to see us?”
Up until now, the sight of him, the sound of his voice, would make my wolf growl in anger and cause me to see red. But now? I’m just too defeated to care. We’ve already decided that we’re leaving the Silver Lake Pack as soon as all of this is over and have been in discussions with packs on the East Coast. That was the plan whether Oakley came back with us or not. We’ve hired movers and our stuff is all sitting in storage right now. We just need to know where we’re heading and we’ll have Levi and all of the things we’ve done in our rearview mirror.
If only it were that easy for Oakley to forgive us
I look up to see Levi and it’s the first time that I’ve taken a good look at him since the Alpha Council meeting. He looks like sh it. He’s lost weight and muscle mass, as evidenced by the way his normally fitted clothing sags on his b*dy. He’s pale with large dark circles under his eyes, as if he’s barely slept. His hair hangs lankly around his face, his normally vibrant eyes dull and misty.
I know that he had felt Oakley be intimate with her second chance mate for the first time the other day and I won’t deny that I felt a smug satisfaction at knowing he felt even a fraction of the pain that he caused her. Looks like the two of them weren’t apart from each other very often and Levi had felt it every time they were together. I’d like to say I was a better wolf than I am and that I felt bad for him. But I’m not. F uck him. He deserves it for all the pain that he caused Oakley. He deserves much worse than this.
We all do.
“We didn’t get to talk to her” I say “Let’s go inside and talk about it. Father needs to hear this too.
When we enter the room, it’s not just our father there. The previous alpha, along with the beta and gam ma are both present in the room. I guess they all want to know if their luna is going to return to their pack. They’re not going to like what we have to
For the first time since the Alpha Council meeting, our father is actually attentive to what is happening around him. His eyes dart all over the room and then zero in on us the second that we walk in. He’s searching our faces for anything that says that his daughter is coming home.
I can’t bear that we’re going to crush that.
“Do you two realize how much trouble you could have gotten in if you had gotten caught tresp as sing on castle property? the former alpha asks.
“We do,” I say, no remorse in my tone at all.
“Oakley is worth it,” Jack says, though his tone is defeated.
“What did you find out, boys?” Father asks.
“We found her walking toward the dungeon with another she-wolf over her shoulder, Jack says, a small smile breaking out over his face. I understand. I’m proud of our little sister too.
“The she-wolf was kicking and screaming, trying to get away from Oakley. She couldn’t. Oakley was too strong.” I say. remembering how Oakley had smacked the absolute sh it out of the tantruming wolf.
Dakley?” Levi says, confused and surprised.

“I could feel her power from where we were hiding. She’s one of the strongest wolves I’ve ever encountered, including alphas She’s a f ucking beast” Jack says, that proud smile stretching over his face a little more
“What else?” Father asks, desperate for news of his littlest pup.
We detail how the other wolves followed down into the dungeon, how they all came back out, how many of them deferred to Oakley, and how happy she looked with her second chance mate. That last bit pulled a pained groan from Levi, but he doesn’t say anything else
At the end, I say, “I don’t think that she’s coming back. I don’t even think that she’ll talk with us. She’s strong. She’s happy Why would she want anything to do with us?”
The only sound in the room are the muf fled sniffles from my father and the heavy breathing from Levi as he tries to keep his wolf calm
None of us really look at each other and no one moves for several minutes until the sound of Levi’s phone breaks the
tension
He slowly pulls it out of his pocket, his eyes gliding over the screen before they grow wide. He looks at all of us with shock, before fumbling to open the phone and take the call.
“Head Commander Sophia? Yes. Yes! Of course! Tomorrow morning. 9 o’clock. We’ll all be there. Thank you!”
The second he gets off the phone, a huge grin splitting his face. “She wants to see us,” he says, looking at Jack, me, and our father. “Tomorrow morning. We’re going to see Oakley”
