The sudden bombshell revelation stunned Calla for several seconds before she recovered.

Her mind was a whirlwind of thoughts. Mercer’s ex–girlfriend? Why was she contacting Calla? What did

she want?

Calla had probably been silent for too long. Sophie spoke up again, “Are you listening?”

Her voice dragged Calla back to reality, and she quickly said, “I’m sorry, Mercer has never mentioned your before. I think you should also know that Mercer and I are married. You should call me Mrs. Garland, not Ms. Sherman.”

The person on the other end did not argue with her. Instead, she said, “Mrs. Garland, I just v chat with you. Do you perhaps have time this afternoon?”

want to have a

There was an imploring note in her voice, and she didn’t sound like an angry, accusing mistress at all. She had a melodious voice, and Calla could not find it in her to reject the request.

That said, Calla knew better than to be so trusting of her. No matter how gentle the other party was, she couldn’t possibly have good intentions. Thus, she said directly, “I don’t know you, so I have nothing to say to you.”

She was about to hang up, but Sophie said very quickly, “I know that it’s very forward of me to call you out of the blue like this, but I feel like it won’t be good for any of us if we keep going on like this.”

Calla laughed coldly. “What do you mean by that? Things are going very well between us. As you said, you’re his ex–girlfriend. Ex–girlfriends belong to the past. And even if you and Mercer reignite the flame, you should be meeting him instead of bothering me.”

Calla was rather agitated, and it made her feel strangely anxious. She thought about how late Mercer had been returning every night. He must have gotten back together with this ex–girlfriend of his.

Calla felt her scalp prickle at this thought.

Sophie ignored the stiffness in Calla’s tone. She maintained a soft, gentle tone as she said, “You’re absolutely right, but there are some things that Mercer can’t bear to tell you. That means that you’ll keep being left in the dark, and I know that getting lied to doesn’t feel good.

“As a woman, I feel that there’s a need for the two of us to sit down and talk. I’ll be waiting for you at 2:00 pm this afternoon at Coastal Coffee, the café near your apartment building.” She hung up immediately

after that.

Calla put down the phone, looking dazed. She remained uneasy the entire morning, wondering if she should go or not.

She wanted to call Mercer and ask him directly about Sophie, but she hung up before the call could even

connect.

She and Mercer weren’t really husband and wife. Could she accuse him of anything?

She had no right to do so, and it had all been written very clearly in their prenuptial agreement. She was not allowed to interfere in his personal affairs.

After thinking it over for a long time, when it was almost 2:00 pm, Calla finally decided to go.

She knew that she would hear a lot of things that would make her unhappy, but she still decided to go because she was curious.

She was curious about what had happened between Mercer and that woman, and what kind of relationship they were currently maintaining. She also wanted to know what that woman wanted from her.

She remembered overhearing Mercer and Rose’s conversation at Garland Mansion in Sedonia. Rose had asked if he still wasn’t over his last relationship. Had Rose been talking about Sophie?
