Chapter 68
Mercer suddenly said, “Since we’re going to put on a show, we might as well go all out. Plus, you’re a grown woman. You shouldn’t worry your mom anymore.”
Calla couldn’t help the bitter smile that appeared on her face. Although she was mocking herself internally, she maintained her composure and said to Mercer, “Thank you for being so considerate.”
In truth, all of the care and concern he exhibited were merely an act. Calla chastised herself for being so moved because of him. How could she have been so presumptuous and planned a life with him?
“You’re welcome. We’re legally husband and wife now, so we should compromise with each other.” Mercer spoke as though he was talking about one of his business projects.
Calla raised her chin to make herself appear more confident. She responded, “You’re right.”
They had already walked to the car where Simon had taken the luggage from Mercer. The two of them got into the car, and they drove off within seconds.
As the car sped through traffic, Calla looked at the neighborhood they were rapidly leaving behind. Desolation took over her heart.
She was about to move into Mercer’s home, though there was no love between them. In addition, she was pregnant with his child. She’d never thought that her marriage would end up like this.
Just as Calla expected, Mercer lived in Emerald Bay, one of the most prestigious neighborhoods in Riverford. The most unique thing about it was its nature–inspired architecture.
The neighborhood was filled with flowers and trees, providing an instant breath of fresh air to anyone who walked in. As such, the price of property here was unbelievably expensive. The people living here were either insanely rich or influential.
Mercer led Calla into a luxurious apartment building. His home was a duplex unit that had to be at least 2,000 square feet on both the upper and lower floors. The interior was modern, featuring simple black and white furniture.
However, it felt cold and stiff, lacking the warmth of a home. It resembled an office more than a living space,
Calla continued surveying the gigantic unit. In truth, she did not like it here. The black–and–white curtains made her feel as though she couldn’t breathe.
Mercer placed her luggage on the black–and–white floor, pulling out a ring of keys as well as a credit card. Calla looked at him in confusion.
In the next moment, Mercer handed her the things and said, “These are the keys to the apartment. There’s
a car parked in the garage. If you need it, you can use it
“Since it’s been revealed that we’re married, it’s inappropriate for you to continue working at Atlas. I’ll help you submit your resignation letter. You can use this card however you please. The limit on this card is 100 thousand, enough to provide for you and the child’s daily necessities.”
He had already arranged everything. Calla looked at the keys and card in her hands, feeling completely desolate. He sounded like a boss giving orders to an employee. There was no warmth between them that should normally exist between husband and wife.

Calla looked down and muttered, “I know, thanks.”
At thi
moment, Mercer glanced at the watch on his wrist. “Get used to things around here on your own. I have something to do, so I’ll head off first,” he said.
Calla nodded. “Alright.”
Only when she heard the sound of the door closing did Calla realize that he’d really left.
Looking around the space, Calla felt loneliness envelop her, the only person in the enormous unit.
