Upon seeing them, Calla decided to just take it and stuff it into Carol’s hands while saying, “Mom, this is his gift to you. If you don’t take it, it means you don’t accept him as your son–in–law.”
When she heard Calla’s explanation, Carol begrudgingly accepted it. She mumbled, “In that case, alright then.”
However, she belatedly realized that the envelope was extremely thick. She opened it to take a peak before asking incredulously, “This is 20 thousand, isn’t it? No way, this is too much!”
Calla had let her guard down. She hadn’t expected Mercer to give Carol so much money.
Still, she immediately wiped the shocked expression from her face and persuaded, “Mom, you’ve been kind enough by not asking him for a million dollars in exchange for my hand in marriage. Just take it!”
Calla grimaced inwardly at the offer–20 thousand dollars for her dignity and the child in her belly. A cynical part of her couldn’t shake the feeling that the whole thing was just a cheap transaction.
Carol chastised Calla, “You’ve never had a filter on that mouth on yours.”
Mercer stared at Calla while saying, “Mom, that’s exactly why I like Calla.”
At those words, Calla felt a chill go down her spine. Weren’t they just putting on a show? Wasn’t he acting a bit too much? The goosebumps rose on her body.
Calla felt as though she was sitting on a bed of nails, her expression unnatural. In contrast, Mercer’s lips/ remained curved upward. His gaze fell on Calla from time to time while leisurely sipping on his tea.
After a while, Carol broke the silence. “Mercer, it’s your first time here. Stay back to have dinner with us. Although I’m not an extremely capable person, my cooking is still something I can be proud of,”
Before Mercer could say anything, Calla immediately replied, “Mom, Mercer told me that he has a dinner he needed to attend tonight. It was scheduled a while ago, right?”
She winked at Mercer and wiggled her eyebrows.
Mercer smiled lightly and nodded while saying, “Mom, I’ll try your cooking next time. The dinner I have planned tonight is rather important, so I can’t postpone it.”
Carol was rather disappointed. She replied, “Alright. In that case, you can come over next time.”
Initially, Calla intended to send Mercer off. But who would’ve expected him to suddenly say, “Mom, since Calla and I have gotten married, and my residence was fully renovated, shouldn’t I bring her home with me tonight?”
When Calla heard what he said, she looked at him–flabbergasted. What was he talking about? Going home with him? He was springing this onto her! He should’ve asked her about it first, no?
After glancing at Calla who had a vicious glare, Mercer smiled and added, “Mom, I know you’ll miss Calla. In the future, she’ll come back and visit you frequently. Oh, and my home is gigantic, so you can have a
short stay there whenever you wish.”
Carol turned her wistful gaze away from Calla. She took Mercer and Calla’s hands in hers, holding them

together.
She announced, “My daughter will eventually leave the hest. Marrying someone and having children is the natural way of life. I have to let her go. As long as both of you support and take care of each other while going through life, I have no qualms.”
Calla’s eyes brimmed with tears, and she burrowed Into Carol’s arms. She said sweetly, “Mom, I’m not going to leave. I’ll stay with you and Zoey for the rest of our lives.”
As Mercer looked at how Calla was behaving like a sweet girl–something that he’d never seen before- pity flashed across his eyes.
Silly
child, how could a woman not get married? Go pack your belongings, Carol instructed.
Her voice was firm, but Carol could no longer hold back the tears. Thus, she turned around and hurried into her bedroom.
