Calla knew she couldn’t reason with Carol, so she turned and walked outside instead.

Rudy still wore a smile as he said to Mercer, “Mercer, we should have a good chat next time.”

“Sure,” Mercer nodded and turned to follow Calla.

Calla and Carol both got into Mercer’s Bentley. Simon was driving in the front, and Mercer sat in the passenger seat today. Calla and Carol sat side by side in the back.

Carol glanced at the luxurious interior and smiled. She asked, “Mercer, this car is so luxurious. It must belong to your boss, right? Wouldn’t it be inappropriate for us to ride your boss‘ car? We’d better take a cab back instead, so as to not affect your work.”

This puzzled Mercer. He looked at Calla in the rearview mirror. She was at a loss for words herself, not knowing how to explain things to Carol.

Just then, Simon turned to Carol and said with a smile, “Madam, Mr. Garland is the boss. This car belongs to him. As such, you and Mrs. Garland can sit however you like.”

These words left Carol dumbfounded. She frowned and turned to Calla for an explanation.

Calla hurriedly said, “Mom, Mr. Beck’s telling the truth. This car belongs to Mercer.”

Carol was rendered speechless. “Calla, didn’t you tell me that Mercer was just an ordinary office worker? His family is from the countryside with very poor living conditions. They can’t even afford a house. How did he suddenly become CEO and have such a fancy car?

“What’s going on? Why did you lie to your mom?”

Calla couldn’t say anything for a moment. It was her fault for making things up before. Now, nothing she thought to say seemed right.

While Calla was in a dilemma, Mercer smiled and said. “Mom, it’s all my fault. I was afraid you wouldn’t accept my identity and would think I wasn’t serious about Calla. I was worried you wdn’t agree to our marriage. If you want to blame someone, blame me.”

for Carol’s angry gaze turned into a gentle one when she faced Mercer. “I’m aware you’re just speaking up her. I know my own daughter–she must have lied to me. Whether you’re rich or poor, I have no reason to object since I saw how good you are to her.

“As long as you treat her well in the future, I’ll be relieved. This child has suffered too much with me since she was a kid… As she spoke, Carol suddenly wiped her tears with the back of her hand.

Calla quickly handed Carol a handkerchief. “Mom, why are you crying all of a sudden?”

“I’m happy. Carol accepted the handkerchief and dried her tears while speaking.

“Mom, please don’t cry. Otherwise, Calla won’t let me off easy once we get back.” Mercer could even make a joke at this moment.

This joke made Carol burst into laughter. She was in an incredibly good mood.

Seeing this, Calla smiled gratefully at Mercer. He not only captivated young women. He was good at handling middle–aged and elderly women as well. He was truly an all–rounded charmer.

Back at Carol’s home, Mercer solemnly handed Carol an envelope. He said earnestly, “Mom, I was planning to visit you in a few days, so I didn’t prepare a gift today. I can only give you this as an expression of my gratitude. Please accept it.” 2

“How can I? As long as you two are happy together, that’s all that matters. I can’t take your money.” Carol politely refused.
