Chapter 63
At this critical moment, a figure appeared.
The figure used his strong arm to push Peggy aside, causing her to stumble. Jill, on the other hand, ended up landing on the marble floor. She grimaced in pain as soon as she hit the ground.
Calla not only avoided being hit but also heard a few ghostly cries in her ears. When she opened her eyes, she was astonished to find Mercer standing beside her. Jill and Peggy were in a sorry state.
“Are you okay?” Mercer extended his arm to support the nervous Calla.
“I… I’m fine,” Calla replied, still trying to recover from the shock.
Why did he intervene? Wasn’t he afraid of exposing their relationship? The agreement clearly stated that they were to be in a covert marriage.
Carol saw the man supporting Calla, noticing his handsome and dignified appearance. She put two and two together, deducing that this man had to be her son–in–law.
At the next moment, Carol ran up to him and smiled. “Mercer, you’re back from your business trip?”
Mercer didn’t react immediately. Calla whispered beside him, “My mom saw our marriage certificate. She probably matched you to your appearance.”
Mercer immediately understood the implication. He politely smiled at Carol and greeted, “Mom, I’m back.”
Rudy and Peggy busied themselves with helping Jill up. But when they heard Mercer call Carol “mom“, their mouths widened in shock.
Rudy stepped forward with a smile and asked Mercer, “Mr. Garland, why did you call her ‘mom‘? Did I perhaps mishear you?”
Mercer looked at Rudy and enunciated, “You didn’t mishear anything, sir. This lady is my mother–in–law,
you see.”
“What…. what did you just say? Rudy was stunned, his body stiffening like a statue. With his mouth agape. he was unable to articulate his astonishment.
Feeling even more desperate, Peggy pushed Rudy aside and stood in front of Mercer. Her eyes were filled with confusion as she asked, “Mercer, you said she’s your mother–in–law. Then, you and Calla are…
Calla had never expected Mercer to acknowledge their relationship in such a situation. Amidst her shock, she felt warmth in her heart. She knew he was there to help her out.
If it weren’t for Mercer, Calla might’ve suffered a miscarriage due to an assault by those two crazy women. –Mercer maintained a stoic expression as he addressed Peggy. “Ms. Horn, I’ve told you before that we’re
not close enough to call each other by name. We’re just business partners with no personal feelings involved. Please address me as Mr. Garland in the future.”
“I…” Peggy’s face flushed and paled alternately, unable to voice a response.
Calla stood by, watching coldly as she observed how Mercer dealt with the mother–daughter duo. Mercer continued, “Also, I hope you and your mother won’t cause any more trouble for my wife and mother–in–law. Otherwise, I’ll make sure you’re unable to stay in Riverford a day longer. As for whether I

have the ability to do so, I don’t think I need to explain it myself, right?”
Peggy still couldn’t accept the fact that Calla was married to Mercer. She pointed a finger at Calla and asked Mercer, “Did you really marry her? How’s that possible? Are you sure this isn’t a joke?”
At that moment, Mercer pulled a ring from his pocket and handed it to Calla.
