Chapter 60
Calla’s complexion was indeed pale due to morning sickness, and she couldn’t wear makeup for fear of complications. She dressed rather casually, opting to skip the high heels. She looked quite ordinary–and according to Rudy, was a source of shame to the family.
Plus, Calla had a child in her belly. But no one knew that she was married.
Rudy’s words immediately filled Calla’s chest with anger. She retorted, “I don’t steal, I don’t rob, I don’t flirt with men. How am I bringing shame?”
At that moment, Calla glanced at Jill and Peggy, who were seated at a table not far away.
Rudy wasn’t a fool and picked up on Calla’s implication. He flew off the handle as he spat, “You ungrateful daughter. You’ve disgraced me.”
“I think you’ve mistaken me for someone else. The disgraceful daughter you’re looking for is over there. I have nothing to do with you anymore,” Calla replied coldly.
“It seems like you want to be slapped again.” Rudy stepped forward with his hands on his waist.
“If you dare hit me again, I’ll call the police right away,” Calla threatened.
“Both of you, stop it. How can a father and daughter end up arguing as soon as they meet?” Carol quickly intervened between the two fiercely confronting individuals. She looked helpless.
Upon hearing Calla’s threat to call the police, Rudy seemed to back off a bit. He scolded Carol, “Look at what you’ve raised. She has no manners at all. Not only is she disrespectful toward her parents, she also got pregnant before marriage. She’s utterly shameless!”
Rudy muttered a few more unpleasant words before turning and walking away. Calla was furious and wanted to chase after him to argue more, but Carol stopped her.
“Calla, it’s your cousin’s special day today. We can’t cause trouble,” Carol said with a tearful voice.
Calla knew that Carol had spent a long time dressing up in her room before leaving the house. The clothes Carol wore were the ones she had been reluctant to wear and always kept in the wardrobe.
Naturally, Calla understood that Carol was trying to impress Rudy today, especially since they hadn’t seen each other in a long time. Now, Carol must’ve felt uncomfortable after being scolded by Rudy for not knowing how to discipline Calla.
Calla endured this silently and chose not to argue with Rudy any further.
With a mindset to keep the peace, Carol and Calla sat at a table far away from Rudy and Jill’s family. -Carol was no longer considered a part of the Shermans, and Calla didn’t have any significant
accomplishments to boast. Therefore, they were naturally disregarded by their relatives.
On the other hand, Rudy and Jill were thriving. They started their own insurance company and bought a large house. Hence, they became popular among relatives and friends. There was a continuous exchange
of toasts between them.
Maurice, Tasha, Ethan, and Eleanor began making their rounds to thank the guests. They didn’t neglect Calla and Carol, but Carol still felt uncomfortable and ate very little.
Seeing this, Calla felt sorry for Carol and whispered in her ear, “Mom, it’s getting late. Shall we go home
now?”
Carol looked at the guests who were enjoying their meal. She shook her head and said, “Since we’re already here, let’s endure a little longer. We can’t be seen as impolite.”
Carol was a good mother in every way. She was the typical virtuous wife and loving mother. However, her personality was too weak. She lacked the ability to fight back and always tolerated everything in silence.
This was also the reason why Rudy had almost taken away all their property, leaving both sisters to Carol.
