Chapter 47

Alicia glanced at Calla and smiled mischievously. “Did something happen last night? You seem off today.”

Seeing Alicia’s playful grin, Calla decided to come clean. “Something is bound to happen when a man and woman are alone in a room with such beautiful scenery, alright?”

“Spill the details, now!” Alicia’s interest was instantly piqued.

“The food will stop you from talking.” Calla jabbed a piece of chicken with her fork and shoved it into Alicia’s mouth.

As Alicia chewed, she continued smiling mischievously at Calla. “Mmm, delicious!”

Calla rolled her eyes in exasperation, feeling thoroughly annoyed with her friend.

At that moment, Simon, who was dining at the same table with Mercer, suddenly stood up and cleared his throat. “Everyone, Mr. Garland has a special treat for us today. Each of you will get a serving of Macosia–imported premium caviar. Enjoy!”

The announcement caused a stir among the employees, as the Macosia–imported premium caviar was known to be extremely expensive.

Hearing this, Calla looked over at Mercer. He was quietly eating without any expression.

“Macosia–imported premium caviar? We’d normally never be able to afford that. I heard caviar is great for health. Looks like we’re all benefiting because of you,” Alicia said excitedly.

“He’s just showing off his wealth. It has nothing to do with me,” Calla quickly retorted.

But deep down, she knew very well that Mercer must have seen her trying to open the caviar dish earlier. This wasn’t just a whim. He wanted to let her have some. Giving it to everyone was a way to avoid making

it too obvious.

At that moment, her heart felt warm, and she was filled with a sense of happiness.

“Do you think I’m blind? I saw you eyeing the caviar earlier,” Alicia challenged.

Calla held her ground. “He’s just trying to pamper the baby.”

*Then why did he send Peggy away? Does your baby dislike her too?” Alicia asked while glaring at Calla.

Taken aback, Calla stammered, “W–What? Who sent Peggy away?”

Looking around, she realized Peggy was indeed absent. Normally, she would be flaunting herself in front of Mercer by now.

“What? You don’t know? This morning, Simon arranged for Peggy to be sent back to Riverford. She was so reluctant to leave that she was almost on the verge of tears. Those who hate her are all celebrating.” Alicia explained.

Calla glanced at Mercer again. He was still eating elegantly, but her heart was in turmoil. She never expected him to send Peggy away. Could it really have been for her sake?

Just then, Alicia leaned in and teased, “Looks like you performed very well last night. Mr. Garland is in a great mood today.”

“Stop talking nonsense.” Calla withdrew her gaze and touched her face, feeling hot.

“Nonsense? I saw the scrooge running this morning, looking refreshed and full of energy,” Alicia said with a smirk.

Calla lowered her head, reminiscing about the events of last night. Despite feeling exhausted after their late–night intimacy, Mercer had the energy to go for a run. His strength impressed her. She could still

vividly recall the feel of his strong, muscular body.
