Chapter 40
Alicia had already mingled with some male colleagues
Peggy was even more extravagantly dressed today. She wore a backless gold dress that nearly exposed her backside. Despite its gaudiness, the men couldn’t help but sneak glances.
Meanwhile, Calla quietly sat in a corner, enjoying the food rather than seeking attention.
As the dinner party was nearing its end, the evening emcee, Toby Davies, announced the start of the game session.
“Ladies and gentlemen, our first game tonight is a balloon transport competition. In these two boxes are cards with the names of everyone present
“I will randomly select five men and five women to come up on stage,” Toby explained while standing in front of two transparent boxes filled with cards.
The balloon transport game required one man and one woman to form a team. They couldn’t use their hands and couldn’t let the balloon touch the ground. Instead, they had to use their bodies to transport the balloon from the starting point to the finish line.
The team that transported the most balloons within the time limit would win.
The game was meant to test the coordination between the two partners and create some comedic moments between the opposite sexes, so the atmosphere was lively. The men were eager to be chosen.
Soon, four pairs of men and women were already standing on stage.
Calla thought she wouldn’t be selected since the probability was low as there were at least a hundred. female employees. But fate had other plans, and she was chosen as the last contestant.
“The fifth lady is… Calla Sherman!” Toby announced,
Calla was initially lost in her thoughts, but her colleague nudged her, bringing her back to reality. She reluctantly stood up and adjusted her hair before making her way to the stage.
Toby continued, “Now, for the last male contestant…”
At that moment, Mercer glanced at Simon standing next to him, who immediately gestured to Toby.
Toby caught on quickly and said into the microphone, “Everyone, our caring Mr. Garland also wants to participate in this game. So, the partner for our fifth lady is none other than Mr. Garland himself. Let’s welcome him!”
The women in the audience immediately stared at Calla with envy upon hearing that Mercer would participate. They all wondered why they weren’t the fifth lady chosen.
Standing on stage, Calla was dumbfounded when Mercer stepped up onto the stage. They were going to be a team? This realization made her heart race.
Mercer quickly stood beside her. As the staff prepared the balloons, she suddenly heard his deep voice -beside her. “Don’t be nervous. Let’s get first place.”
Calla glanced at his face and noticed that, although his expression remained impassive, his eyes held a gentle warmth that was unlike his usual cold demeanor. She couldn’t help but wonder what had caused

his sudden change in just a few days.
In the next moment, Calla caught sight of a sharp gaze from the crowd out of the corner of her eye. It was a hateful glare that was different from the usual jealousy.
Peggy wanted to drag Calla off the stage. Her expression twisted with malice, as if Calla had stolen her
meal.
Seeing that, Calla smiled at Peggy and suddenly put on a very happy expression. In truth, she was just trying to annoy Peggy.
Sure enough, Peggy’s face contorted. She was likely furious beyond belief. Calla couldn’t help but find it amusing.
