Chapter 32

Peggy’s attitude irked Alicia. She pointed to the service guide on the wall and said sternly, “It clearly states here that expense claims require a three–day advance notice. Our payments are all scheduled out. “There’s a set amount allocated for daily expenses. For a company of this size, with dozens of claims to process every day, wouldn’t it be chaos without a schedule?”

Peggy’s face turned red with anger at those words. She snatched the documents and shot Alicia a fierce glare before storming out.

Once Peggy left, Alicia cursed under her breath, “What a piece of work!”

Just as Calla was about to step forward to console Alicia, one of their colleagues, Rayne, approached Alicia with a mysterious air. “Alright, calm down. She’s got connections. Be careful what you say, or she might twist things against you.”

Alicia raised her head and locked eyes with Calla before turning to Rayne. “What connections does she have?”

“I heard she and Mr. Garland are from the same school. Rumor has it that they were taught by the same teacher. Why else do you think Mr. Garland handed over all of Atlas‘ accident insurance to her?” Rayne answered with a lowered voice.

“Yeah, I heard that too. Lately, Peggy’s been showing up at Atlas all the time. Seems like she’s quite close to Mr. Garland,” another colleague chimed in.

Calla couldn’t help but shake her head. Peggy was just like Jill, always worming her way into everything. She could even establish a connection with Mercer just because they had the same teacher.

Though Peggy claimed they were from the same school, she barely attended classes back then and supposedly failed many of them.

Rayne smirked. “Maybe selling insurance is just a side gig. Her real goal is to snag a wealthy husband.”

The ladies in the office began teasing.

“Would Mr. Garland have such poor taste? I don’t think there’s a sincere bone in her body.”

“I know, right? The line of women wanting to sleep with Mr. Garland could stretch all the way outside the city from here.”

Normally, Calla would just laugh along with these remarks, but today they made her uncomfortable. Was it because she had already married Mercer?

But she knew very well that Mercer had only married her because of the baby. Otherwise, there would have been a wedding. And chances were, she’d be divorced after giving birth.

Alicia couldn’t help but sneer. “Maybe Mr. Garland is already married!”

“What? How would you know?” The colleagues all turned to Alicia simultaneously.

Alicia exchanged a glance with Calla before quickly explaining, “I don’t know anything. I just figured Mr. Garland is getting along in age, plus he’s hot and rich, so maybe he’s already taken.”

After saying that, she winked at Calla. Thankfully, she reacted quickly and didn’t let anything slip.

“I have a feeling Mr. Garland isn’t married.”

“I agree. I saw him the other day, and he wasn’t wearing a wedding ring.”

“Yeah, neither Ally nor the company’s top brass have ever mentioned Mr. Garland having a wife.”

The Ally mentioned was Ally Reynolds, Mercer’s secretary.

The female colleagues discussed possible evidence that Mercer wasn’t married, and Calla couldn’t help but purse her lips. She wondered if these women would tear her apart on the spot when they found out she’d tied the knot with Mercer.

Just as the female colleagues were fantasizing about Mercer, Peggy returned, clicking her heels.

Seeing her, everyone quickly returned to their seats.
