Chapter 137
Calla leaned against a tree, frowning as she watched Mercer walk ahead. She wanted to call him but couldn’t bring herself to shout.
At that moment, Mercer seemed to sense something and suddenly stopped. Turning around, he saw he had left Calla several meters behind.
Seeing her leaning against the tree, he frowned and quickly walked back to her.
As he approached, Calla noticed his frown and braced herself, thinking he might scold her. Unexpectedly, he bent down and scooped her up in his arms.
Before Calla could even process what was happening, she felt herself lifted into the air. Already feeling dizzy, this made her even more lightheaded. Instinctively, she wrapped her arms around Mercer’s neck, afraid of falling from a height.
The next moment, Mercer carried her into their building.
By the time Calla came to her senses, they were already inside the hallway. His embrace was still as warm and strong as ever. In spite of herself, she had a wishful thought. She hoped he could carry her like this forever.
But she knew this was a mere fantasy–an impossible dream. She decided to cherish this moment, hoping it would be a beautiful memory in the future.
As they reached the elevator, their eyes met. Calla pressed the button with a knowing look.
When the elevator arrived, Mercer stepped inside with Calla still in his arms. She pressed the button to
their floor.
Throughout this process, they didn’t exchange a single word. A few glances were enough for them to coordinate and reach their home.
Calla pressed the doorbell, and Jasmine quickly opened the door.
Seeing Mercer carry Calla, Jasmine was stunned for a moment. Then, she stepped aside to let them
- in.
“Mr. Garland, Mrs. Garland, you’re back!” Jasmine greeted them warmly.
Neither Mercer nor Calla replied.
Mercer carried Calla inside and headed straight for the bedroom. He gently laid her on the bed.
His eyes were deep and thoughtful, it was as if he had something to say. Calla waited, hoping he’d speak the words she expected to hear. But he remained silent.
Wearing an apron, Jasmine appeared at the bedroom door. She smiled and said, “Mr. Garland, Mrs. Garland, lunch is ready. Shall I serve it now?”
“I have matters to attend to. I won’t be eating at home,” Mercer replied as he buttoned up his coat.
Calla felt a pang of disappointment, so she lowered her eyes. He was leaving again.

Jasmine quickly asked, “Will you be home for dinner?”
At this moment, Calla’s ears were straining to catch his every word.
“I’ll be busy these next few days. I won’t be coming back. Take good care of Mrs. Garland. Simon will bring the groceries on schedule. Call me if there’s anything important.”
After delivering his instructions, Mercer’s gaze fell on Calla.
Hearing his instructions, Calla felt a wave of sadness.
What did he mean by this? Was he distancing himself? Or was it out of compassion that he felt discussing divorce now was inappropriate?? Did he plan to abandon her once she was well again?
Calla smiled bitterly to herself. Mercer’s actions were already very considerate toward her. Should she just be grateful for his kindness?
