Chapter 136
At this moment, Simon, who was following Mercer, began to clear the area. He told the nosy onlookers, “Move along! Nothing to see here!”
After clearing the area, only Mercer, Sophie, Alicia, Calla, and Simon remained. They stood together in front of the hospital entrance.
Calla observed Mercer coldly, curious about his reaction. She wondered how he would respond now that his beloved had complained to him. Would he sternly rebuke her, or slap her to avenge Sophie?
“I’d rather you didn’t come here,” Mercer said to Sophie, looking down at her.
Hearing this, Sophie gazed at him in disappointment, appearing hurt. “Mercer, don’t misunderstand me.”
Mercer looked up and instructed Simon, “Simon, take Ms. Jonas home.”
“Mercer…” Sophie’s tone carried a hint of dissatisfaction, but Mercer remained silent.
Still, Sophie knew his character well. If she stayed any longer, she would only embarrass herself. She cast a glance back at Calla before leaving with Simon.
At this moment, the straightforward Alicia stepped in front of Mercer. Facing him, she fearlessly said, Mr. Garland, you’re not divorced from Calla yet. Please keep that woman in check and don’t let her come barking at Calla!”
Calla frowned at Alicia’s boldness in speaking to Mercer. Knowing his unpredictable temper, she feared he might retaliate against Alicia.
Yet, Mercer did not seem angry, though his expression remained stern. He looked at Alicia and said seriously, “I’ll keep that in mind. But that woman is not my responsibility.”
Calla didn’t understand the meaning behind his words.
Was he saying he couldn’t control Sophie, or was he trying to distance himself from her? But could his relationship with Sophie be so easily dismissed? Calla doubted the latter.
After speaking, Mercer turned to Calla and said, “Let’s go.”
Calla glanced at Mercer and nodded slightly, following his steps as they left the hospital. Seeing this, Alicia knew she should give them some space, so she made an excuse and slipped away.
Mercer hailed a cab to take Calla back to their home, as Simon had driven the car away to drop Sophie off.
Calla sat in the back seat, with Mercer in the front passenger seat. They did not speak a word the entire ride back.
Was he here specifically to pick her up from the hospital? Calla’s eyes lingered on the back of his head.
She couldn’t fathom his thoughts after not showing up for seven days. Was that his way of telling her

that the only bond between them was gone, and their story had come to an end?
Regardless, he came to pick her up today. It was true that he hadn’t wronged her in any way. Perhaps, when they got home, he would pull out a divorce agreement.
If that happened, Calla told herself she had to agree gracefully and not show any signs of sadness in front of him. She must not let him think she was trying to gain his sympathy.
20 minutes later, the cab stopped at the entrance of their apartment.
Mercer paid the fare, then got out and opened the door for Calla. She found that she couldn’t even look him in the eye, and thus lowered her head as she stepped out.
He walked ahead in silence, with her following closely behind.
Today, he slowed his pace on purpose, but even so, Calla had trouble keeping up.
Too weak postpartum, she had to stop after a while–bending over and gasping for breath.
