Chapter 128
Jasmine sighed with relief after hanging up the phone.
“Ms. Reynolds said since a car wouldn’t be fast enough–given the urgency of the situation–they’re sending Mr. Garland’s helicopter to pick you up, Mrs. Garland. It should be here in about 20 minutes.”
Upon hearing this, Calla also breathed a sigh of relief, She hadn’t expected Mercer to have a private helicopter. Poverty certainly had limited her imagination.
True to Ally’s words, a small helicopter landed in front of the villa half an hour later. Ally and the pilot. personally came to escort Calla.
Jasmine carried a bag full of essentials and helped Calla onto the helicopter.
As the aircraft slowly ascended into the blue sky littered with white clouds, Calla stared blankly at the shrinking villa below. For some reason, she began to panic.
She usually didn’t have a fear of heights. But today, her head was pounding severely, and her heart felt uneasy, possibly due to pre–labor anxiety.
Sensing Calla’s nervousness, Ally held her hand and comforted her, “Don’t worry, I’ve already contacted the best obstetrics and gynecology hospital in Riverford. The doctors are ready. They’ll take you straight to the delivery room as soon as we land.”
“Thank you,” Calla said gratefully. If Ally hadn’t handled things promptly, she didn’t know what might have happened while waiting another few hours.
Ally smiled. “It’s the least I can do. Besides, Mr. Garland called me just before boarding the plane and instructed me to send the helicopter immediately if anything happened on your end. I’m just a secretary; I don’t have the authority to use Mr. Garland’s private aircraft without his permission.”
Hearing this reassured Calla somewhat. It seemed Mercer was still responsible when it came to her unborn child.
“When… is he coming back?” Even though he loved someone else, Calla still wanted him to witness the birth of their child. It would give her some peace of mind.
“Mr. Garland has to attend the Syna conference scheduled in advance,” Ally quickly replied. “It will take him three to four days.”
Upon hearing this, Calla nodded silently and closed her eyes. A wave of disappointment surged through her chest. In that three to four days, the child would likely already be born, and Mercer wouldn’t be able to be there for her during labor.
Seeing Calla’s disappointment, Ally hurriedly added, “But don’t worry, I’ve already sent text messages and emails to Mr. Garland. As soon as he lands, he should receive them immediately. There’s a chance he might rush back.”
“Thank you,” Calla murmured with her eyes closed.
Soon after, she felt her contractions intensifying, and sweat started to bead on her forehead. Calla knew the baby was coming.
Half an hour later, the plane landed at Riverford’s top obstetrics and gynecology hospital. Calla was swiftly wheeled into the delivery room.
Ally and Jasmine waited outside the, delivery room for hours without any news from inside.
Suddenly, the sound of high heels clicking against the floor echoed at the end of the hallway.
Jasmine looked up and saw an elegantly dressed woman in her 50s accompanied by a younger woman in her 30s approaching.
“Mrs. Garland Senior? Ms. Jonas?” Jasmine greeted them, slightly surprised.
Ally had met Mercer’s mother a couple of times before, so she also stepped forward to greet them.
“How is she doing?” Rose glanced toward the door of the delivery room.
“We don’t know the specifics yet,” Ally replied.
Rose frowned slightly, then turned to Sophie behind her and said, “Let’s wait and see.”
As Rose sat down, Sophie took a seat beside her. Ally and Jasmine remained standing.
A moment later, the door of the delivery room suddenly opened. A female doctor in a white coat steppeti
out.
