Chapter 126
Sophie’s words made Calla’s stomach churn.
Calla anxiously sat down on the couch with her hands against her waist.
Sophie was right. A family like the Garlands would never let one of their own stray from the family.
It was clear that the Garlands cared deeply about the child when Rose suddenly visited and brought so many baby items two months ago.
But knowing it was impossible was one thing; whether she would fight back was another matter. Calla firmly declared, “I will never give up custody of my child!”
“It’s likely you won’t have a choice when the time comes,” Sophie sneered.
Calla glared at Sophie. “You love Mercer; I won’t compete with you for that. But why can’t you have your own child? Why do you have to steal someone else’s?”
“It’s not that you won’t compete with me, it’s that you don’t even have the qualifications to compete with me. You’re just my replacement!” Sophie retorted arrogantly.
Seeing Sophie’s arrogant attitude, Calla seemed to understand. She probably came to provoke her at this time to agitate her emotions and potentially affect her child’s birth.
When she realized the scheme, Calla suppressed her anger and silently told herself, “Calla, don’t fall for her trap. Hang in there!”
Then, she let out a low chuckle.
“Why are you laughing?” Sophie was taken aback by Calla’s laugh.
Calla held back her smile and exposed Sophie’s intentions. “I’m laughing because what you’re saying shows your lack of confidence. Are you impatient because Mercer is hesitating to divorce me and marry
you?”
“Bullshit! Mercer said he would divorce you after you give birth, then marry me!” Sophie shouted.
“If that’s the case, why are you getting impatient? I’ll be giving birth soon. Did you have to rush all the way to Butterfly Hill to find me?” Calla asked disdainfully.
Realizing her first plan had failed, Sophie resorted to the second plan she had come up with before.
“Calla, do you know why Mercer sent you to this villa on Butterfly Hill?” Sophie crossed her arms, her eyes gleaming sinisterly.
“What are you trying to say?” Calla responded coldly.
Sophie chuckled with her head lowered. “On the surface, it’s because you were unfaithful, which angered Mercer. That’s why he sent you to this middle–of–nowhere place to prevent you from cheating on him again.”
Calla stared at Sophie in shock. It seemed Mercer had reached a point where he shared everything with Sophie.
Calla wasn’t surprised, though.

After all, Sophie was someone who Mercer kept close to his heart for ten years. For a man like him to not fall in love with another woman during all those years showed just how important she was to him.
For some reason, Calla’s chest tightened painfully at the thought of that. She gently placed her hand on her swollen belly, where the baby seemed to be acting up.
“But there’s another reason you don’t know of,” Sophie continued. “Mercer didn’t want me to be upset with you staying in Riverford. He doesn’t like seeing me unhappy, so he brought you here.
“You have no idea how blissful life in Riverford is for Mercer and me without you around. We could spend our days together, watching as the sun rises and sets each day.” Sophie smiled as she drew closer to Calla.
Hearing this, Calla was left dumbfounded.
She had never imagined there to be a reason like this behind Mercer’s insistence on sending her here. It turned out that he disliked her presence in Riverford because it bothered Sophie.
