Chapter 123

Those words angered Rose, who reprimanded, “Sophie, I am your elder regardless, and you are to be my daughter–in–law. Is this how you speak to your future mother–in–law?

Mindful of Rose’s position, Sophie immediately softened her tone. “Mrs. Garland Senior, I apologize. I’m just anxious. I hope you understand how I feel. I just can’t wait any longer.”

“Haste makes waste. Things need to be done step by step; otherwise, they could backfire,” Rose said, trying to placate Sophie while also having her own plans in mind. She softened her attitude as well.

“Mrs. Garland Senior, do you have a plan or not?” Sophie couldn’t help but press.

“I visited that woman a few days ago and have come up with a comprehensive plan, but it will take two more months to implement,” Rose explained.

“Two more months? But why? If you have a plan, let’s execute it immediately!” Sophie was impatient.

“That woman is carrying Mercer’s child right now. That child is a member of the Garland family. I must ensure she safely gives birth. I don’t want to do anything that would bring bad karma,” Rose insisted.

“Mrs. Garland Senior, I hope this isn’t just an excuse.” Sophie narrowed her eyes.

“I promised you, after all. I won’t go back on my word. If you don’t trust me, there’s no need for us to cooperate,” Rose insisted.

Sophie realized that her impatience wouldn’t help. After a moment of thought, she finally said, “Alright, I) trust you. I will wait two more months, but you mustn’t give me any more excuses when the time comes.”

“I only ask one thing: do not harm the child she is carrying. As for the rest, I don’t care,” Rose stated.

“It’s a deal!” Sophie couldn’t worry about anything else at this moment. She only wanted Calla out of Mercer’s life. As for Mercer’s potential child, she could overlook that for now.

It was wintertime two months later.

Winter in the mountains was exceptionally cold. Although the villa had central heating and wool carpets on the floor, Calla still felt cold, especially at night. Despite covering herself with thick blankets, her hands and feet remained icy.

One night, Calla couldn’t fall asleep after waking up. Feeling thirsty, she decided to get some water, only to find the thermos empty. She reluctantly left her warm bed, put on a woolen robe, and stepped out of

her bedroom.

With a cup in hand, she navigated with the moonlight streaming through the windows and headed to the downstairs kitchen to get some hot water. Drinking cold water in such frigid weather would only make her feel colder.

As she reached the top of the stairs, she suddenly heard voices coming from downstairs.

She stopped in her tracks, puzzled. The villa only housed her and Jasmine, so who could Jasmine be talking to? And it sounded like a man.

“Mr. Garland, you can sleep in the guest room upstairs. Mrs. Garland won’t find out,” Jasmine whispered.

Since Jasmine was staying in the master bedroom, only the three guest bedrooms upstairs were avalable.

“No need, I’ll sleep in the car,” came Mercer’s voice.

Calla’s heart immediately skipped a beat.

It really was him. When had he arrived? He hadn’t been there when she went to bed. Had he come while she was asleep?

The thought of him navigating the treacherous mountain roads at night filled her with unease.
