With his hands on the steering wheel, Simon chuckled upon hearing that.
“That’s precisely why I haven’t bothered with a relationship–women are too much trouble.”
“That’s because you haven’t met someone who captured your heart at first sight,” Mercer uttered, staring at the dark mountain landscape outside the window.
“Mr. Garland, you seem a bit…” Simon hesitated.
“A bit what?” Mercer asked indifferently.
“A bit lovesick,” Simon replied with a shake of his head and a smile.
Simon had been Mercer’s assistant for years. Besides their superior–subordinate relationship, they had a good personal rapport, allowing them to speak more freely when alone.
Simon was adept at knowing when to be informal and when to be serious, which was why he had become Mercer’s right–hand man.
A rare smile appeared on Mercer’s stern face. “Are you mocking me, you punk?”
“I would never!” Simon quickly waved his hand in denial.
After some light–hearted banter, Mercer’s mood seemed to improve significantly.
Just then, the car’s interior was filled with the sound of a ringing phone.
Mercer pulled out his phone. When he glanced at the flashing number on the screen, he frowned slightly before answering the phone.
“Hello?”
“Mercer, you said you’d come see me tonight. It’s almost 10:00 pm, so why aren’t you here yet?” A soft voice spoke as soon as Mercer answered.
Mercer hesitated briefly before replying, “I’m sorry, Sophie. Something came up tonight. I can’t come to see you.”
“What happened? Is it business or personal?” Sophie asked, probing gently from the other end of the line. Mercer was starting to feel a little irritated. “I have some matters to deal with. I’ll come see you another day. I’m busy these days. If you need anything, you can contact my secretary, Ally. She’ll handle it for you.” “But-” Sophie was about to say something when Mercer cut her off with a “Goodbye” and ended the call. After the call ended, Sophie angrily tossed her phone onto the bed and threw herself onto the mattress. Lying there, she stared at the ceiling for a long time before a cunning glint appeared in her eyes as she devised a plan.
The next day, dressed in an off–white dress, Sophie rang the doorbell at Garland Mansion in Sedonia. Jenny didn’t recognize Sophie after she scrutinized her. After all, Jenny hadn’t yet been working at the

residence when Sophie was a frequent visitor.
“Miss, who are you here to see?”
“I’m here to visit Mrs. Garland Senior. Could you please inform her that Sophie is here?” Sophie said confidently.
“Please wait a moment.” Jenny started to close the door.
Sophie quickly added, “Oh, and tell Mrs. Garland Senior that I came from Mercer’s place in Riverford.”
“Okay,” Jenny replied and went to inform Rose.
Just as Sophie expected, she was invited into the residence within two minutes.
However, she wasn’t taken to the living room but was instead seated at a stone table in the garden. At least they brought her a cup of tea.
Sophie wasn’t surprised by this treatment. She wasn’t seeking any special hospitality today. As long as Rose was willing to see her, she had a chance to achieve her goal.
Rose still hadn’t come out of the house after five minutes.
Sophie wasn’t surprised by this delay either. She knew Rose well.
With her wealth and status, Rose loved to put on airs in front of anyone before she eventually made her appearance.
