Chapter Life Isn't Fair

Amy’s POV

Life isn’t fair. It never was. Everything was changing and I couldn’t do anything about it. Tears started falling down my cheeks. I could feel a sob erupt from me. I tried not to but failed. I never sobbed. Not even when Zach died or I was on the verge of going mad. Not when Samara died. My mind raced to...mom. She was lying peacefully in my lap smiling at me. But when I gripped her hand to feel anything but it was cold as ice. Cause she wasn’t alive, she was long gone...

Because of me.

Flashbacks

I just stood there waiting. I don’t know if it was five or ten minutes but I couldn’t let my eyes go from the woman in front of me. I closed my eyes and focused on the woman. Her long ebony hair flew in the wild air, deep Gray eyes staring at me with the same intensity.

“Reaper.” She whispered again and just like that the trance broke. I tried to reach out to my whole being and study her.

“Selene?” I asked when I realized I just summoned the moon goddess. I watched her walking and stopping in front of Sage. I was so engulfed in my mind that I forgot the fact that I still have to defeat sage. Looking at him I saw fear and somewhat amusement.

“Dear goddess.” He bowed kneeling down and a strange feeling crashed down at me. What if he was planning something? Why was he acting like he’s loyal to her?

“You summoned me and I’m at your service. What do you need, my child?” She slowly spoke looking at me.

“I need revenge.” Without thinking I pointed at Sage and she nodded. I don’t know why I didn’t say anything other than that but maybe I really needed revenge. He was the reason my mother turned into a reaper, killed my sister and now we all were going to be killed. Indeed he needed to be punished. He needed to be killed.

Without warning, she flew towards sage and screams began to ripple through the wind. I turned and saw that she was killing others. The great Selene was here to protect us. The other creatures that we left in the room were dropped dead or screaming in pain the floor. I entered the room to see some were trying to run and attack us.

To help her I called forth my own binding souls. I closed my eyes and waited for them to swarm over me. My force crashed upon them to create some distance. High pitched, wrenching screams filled the air as they fought against the creatures. But suddenly I flew off the entrance and hit the ground with force. I grunted in pain as I hit my head on the hard surface.

“Are you alright?″ When I heard the voice I tried to stop the blur that my eyes were creating. With a great effort, I forced myself to move. When my eyes opened I was looking into Danny’s golden eyes.

He got rid of the contacts. The familiarity of his eyes made me smile. They were looking worried and concern was writing over his entire face. I held my hand and lifted it up to my head to feel tiny blood drops dripping down the floor.

“Shit! You’re bleeding! C’mon lets get out of here.” He offered me his hand and I gladly took them. But still, I wanted to know that if Sage was really dead. As if reading my mind he told me, "We’ll come back but right now you need help.” I nodded standing up.

Out of the corner of my eye, I saw one of Sage’s minions was still chanting. I tried to hear what he was chanting but before I could do that darkness consumed us. The moon was hiding itself. That’s when it clicked. He was trying to get Selene back and to my horror, it was working.

Selene let out an inhuman growl and was quickly turning into darkness. I tried to reach over her but before I could move, arms grabbed me roughly from behind. I struggled but he was much stronger. I tried to punch him whoever grabbed me but froze when I saw that it was... Danny.

“What the hell you think you’re doing!” He hissed causing me to roll my eyes. What did he think I’ll be doing? I was trying to save our only chance and now he ruined it.

“I was trying to help Selene, what else!” I snapped. The moon was going down and Selene was fading away. The wind also got chilly and silent.

His eyes met mine, "It’s a suicide to go back there so I suggest we run.” I looked at him with disbelief. He’s kidding, right?

“No. I won’t run until I know Sage is dead.” I sternly replied and tried to walk out but his arm tightened around my arm.

“No, you’re not going anywhere. I promised your mother that I’ll safely return you to her and I don’t break promises.” He said through clenched teeth. Oh, so this is it? He just promised my mother and he suddenly had a right to command me?

I laughed out humorlessly, "You really think that just because you promised my mother, I need to follow you? Don’t you know me by now?” I gritted my teeth to stop my fueling anger.

He was also starting to get angry. "You think that you have everything planned out, ha! Do you ever realize that your little braveness can cause you to lose your life?”

“Why do you care!? It’s not like I’m someone to you. I’m just a person you met and do you forget that I’m a reaper? You were meant to kill me, dammit!” I yelled out with frustration.

Without any reply, he dragged me to the end of the hall. Yeah, right. He doesn’t have an answer. I let him drag me cause I was tired of the fights. I didn’t want to fight him but one moment he shows me concern and the next moment he declines that. We went through another passage and came to a hidden door. He opened it and stuck his head through, "You’re coming or not?″ He grinned. Seriously I don’t understand this boy.

We made our way to the room and saw Zach and mom were in a heated conversation. I frowned and looked at Danny for an explanation but he just shrugged. When they heard us coming they instantly stopped.

“What were you guys talking about?” I asked the duo but they remained silent.

“I asked what is going on in here!” This time I pressed harder and they both flinched. Danny also looked shocked at my behavior but I ignored him.

“We were discussing a way to get out of limbo but Zach thinks my way is too risky.” Mom replied and Zach scrawled. What was this way that is too risky, even for Zach?

Before I questioned her Zach cut me off, "She wants to pretend that she’s ready to help Sage and then open a portal to get out of here. Now there’s a 99 percent chance that we can all get killed by this way.” OK...he was right in a way but before I could answer suddenly a gust of wind knocked me off from my feet. I pulled myself into a standing position and saw that Zach was pinned to the wall and Danny was bound to a chair. Only mom and I were left alone.

Sage was once again in a form of a hellhound. He didn't die instead he found our hideout. I wanted to slap myself mentally for being this stupid. Obviously, he has followed us here. But in our luck, he was almost bleeding out. Selene really did a number on him. If only she could stay a few longer.

My thoughts turned to the present situation when without warning Sage tried to bite my arm which I neatly dodged. Mom was furiously chanting and this slowed Sage a bit but he was still after me.

“I told you I’ll get that gate open today and when I say this know that you’ll die and kill your own mother to do that.” He snarled maniacally and pinned me to the wall next to Zach. He was trying to break free but failed. Danny looked like he could murder Sage in cold blood and he was also trying to stand up from the chair. I guessed that none of their magic was working right now.

Suddenly I realized that I still had the dagger with me in my left pocket. Now if I just could reach my hands in there. I tried and successfully pulled the dagger in my left hand. Then he pulled his own dagger and tried to stub me but without thinking I closed my eyes and pushed the dagger into his heart.

Silence...

I was met with silence. I was expecting some kind of animal growl but I only heard a sharp breath. When I opened my eyes slowly my jaw dropped. Instead of Sage’s blood, my hands were smeared with mom’s blood. She was clutching her heart and her eyes showed relieved. How can she look relieved? I just pushed a dagger in her heart...I just...killed my mother?

I looked at the others to see their reaction. Danny was frozen in his position and Zach's eyes widened in cold shock. When his eyes met mine, he looked away. Sage also looked shocked but when his eyes found mine he grinned.

I was responsible for it all. It was my entire fault. I’ve done what they wanted me to do. I’ve killed my own mother. Before she could slump to the floor I caught her and we both ended up on the floor; my mother’s head in my lap slowly smiling at me.

My chest was burning. This couldn’t be real. This couldn’t be happening. It had to be a horrible nightmare. I need to wake up. I need to wake up right now. I didn’t get to know her. I didn’t get to ask her about my father. There was so much I wanted her to know. My whole body felt numb as I gripped my mother tightly.

“Don’t let them succeed. You’ll open a portal and run. Promise me.” She winced in pain but still whispered. I nodded at her.

My voice was shaking when I tried to talk, "I promise. And mom why did you...”

“I couldn’t let you get killed and I love you, darling. I’m sorry if I ever hurt you. I didn’t mean to leave you both but I had to. Please forgive me.” She was full sobbing now.

“I forgive you. And I love you too. Oh, how I wish I could go back to time and not let the dagger...” But I was cut off with a dead heartbeat. I wanted to scream. Yell.

But nothing came out.

Life...really isn’t fair.
