Chapter 12. Answers

After I escaped from the party, which had no end, I ended up back in my room. Alone, but now I can stand being alone for a while. The party was too much for me, and the alcohol left me alone with even more questions in my head. All those questions, all the questions that keep coming up. There are so many blurry places in my brain that I can't comprehend it anymore.

The feeling of someone controlling my life keeps getting stronger and stronger by the day. Worst of all, I can't talk to anyone about it. Who would believe me? Everyone would declare me crazy. I already declare myself, crazy. In my bed, the dreams continued to haunt me all that night. The phantom is there again, the phantom that leads me to the forest, to the same place as every night.

Up against the tree in the woods, touching me everywhere. Only now there was a new piece. A piece in my room that I don't remember, ever having had before. I startle awake at the knock on the door. Not too loud, but just loud enough to wake me up. I walk to the door with a sleepy head, rubbing my eyes, I open it. “Hello,” I say softly until I see who is standing there. “Avery, may I come in?” He asks quietly, barely audible, with his hands in his pockets. I push the door open just far enough that he can step inside. He closes the door behind him. So we stand opposite each other for a moment until Wyatt scrapes his bunch and starts talking. “I had the weirdest dream ever,” he says, taking a seat on my bed. I don't know where this is going, but the tension in my body increases.

“Wyat, we're not friends, why are you coming here?” I ask him, still at the door to my room. “The dream was about a girl I secretly met in the woods. A girl, who I room with a little later. A pretty purple-colored room.” I feel my breath catch in my throat, no. This was the same dream I had. Only the boy I was with was never really visible. “What do I have to do with that?” I ask him if the voice that was solid a moment ago is now more like a whisper. “That girl had the most beautiful eyes, with a glow in them that I can't put my finger on.” He continues talking, about that dream, which is still etched on my retina from a moment ago. “Wyat,” I whisper as my body makes its way toward him. Unconsciously, not much later, I'm sitting next to him. All we do at that moment is look into each other's eyes, in which I can see something.

It's as if the dream is playing out in front of me. “How?” I ask him when my lips have found their strength again. “I don't know, but I've never felt more alive than I did at that moment. The dream has been haunting me for years now,” he murmurs, laying his head closer to mine. Together both with our foreheads against each other, our hands entwined in each other's, we kiss. And this time all my memories pass through me, just as they did with him.

“Where is the book?” Now my panicked voice asks him. “I don't know Avery. I have only just realized this morning. That you are the girl of my dreams. And now suddenly this whole world opens up to me, which at first I loathed.” I nod understandingly, though, for me, this is finally the answer I was so hopelessly searching for. I thought I was going crazy. “Wait a minute… Brogh wanted to bite me?” I ask him, with a shiver as I think back to the moment. Brogh, the brother who didn't like me from the beginning. Always sought me out in this life.

We had even become close to each other. I even kissed him, I think with a narrow-minded face. “Brogh, yes. I had warned you by my memory? Which you kept ignoring,” he said with a crooked, reproachful smile.

I nod and realize that we cannot let anyone know about this. Merina must not know anything, about our discovery. I will have to hold back the questions I still have and wait until a safe moment. “Wyat, she must never know you were here. Go back to your room and pretend everything is normal.” He looks at me as if he didn't already know this himself. He is mocking me, which makes me feel a giggle, rising. But is suppressed by a noise at my door. Both of us remain mouse-still, waiting for that person standing at my door to walk away.

After fifteen minutes, we finally hear the footsteps stepping away from the door. Which, finally, lets us breathe without the thought that she can hear us. We both knew immediately who was at the door, Merina. Relieved, we breathe as it becomes quiet again in the hallway, and we are finally safe, for now.

“You should go, Wyat, we'll meet later,” I tell him as I kiss Wyat on his cheek. It's weird how my body recognizes him as familiar. Even though I react to him rather coolly as if indeed Merina stole my love from me. The love I want back, at any cost, the love I gave up far too soon. Wyat was before it all my life through our bonded bond by the mark we both bear.

A mark I now no longer have or hidden deeper in my skin. It feels like the sign provided the bondage, like the attraction. It feels like a heavy loss, like the love she stole. I even have to admit now that I realize it, I miss my previous life.

The life, where we were both bound. Other than eating vampire meat, and the need of thirst. Now one more task awaits us to defeat the witch Merina once and for all.
