The Rotting Flesh Book 2: Deadman’s Wonderland

Chapter 6: New Acquittances

The night went by quickly due to the sore bodies the trio had. Their bodies felt much better the following day than before, they had recovered most of their strength and recollected their emotions enough to talk. The time when they woke up most of the people were sitting outside basking in the sun. The trio went out and sat on their own soot separate from the others. It was not like most of the people stayed together it seemed as though most of them were loners except for the two asians. Down at the beginning of the woods was Donovan doing pull ups on a tree.

“Who are those two, I didn’t see them last night” asked Tanya pointing at two identical men who were having a conversation close to where Don was

“What are we going to do Tom?” asked Theresa who looked like someone who didn’t get enough sleep

“Are you okay?” asked Tanya just noticing how she looked “did you sleep well”

“I’m fine” she lied

She had not slept much the whole night. Fear was overwhelming her ever since their encounter with Ceaser. Worse when she came to realize the cell doors were not locked even at night she couldn’t sleep for much long without having a nightmare.

“You sure?” asked Tanya

“I said I’m fine” she snapped, stood up and went back to the cells

Tom could clearly see she was not okay but could not do much about it because he felt like he was the main cause of the whole situation.

“Damn, what did I get us into” he said in a low tone

His heart ached as he contemplated the situation at hand.

God, what did I get us into…she’s only a child he tormented himself

Tanya gently laid her hand on his shoulder and he looked up at her with pain visible in his eyes.

“We wouldn’t have made it this far without you” she said and hugged him

He fought back the tears as hard as he could.

“Such wise words, coming from a young one” a familiar voice said from behind Tom

Tanya let go of him and he turned to see who it was, it was the asian guy from last night

“Shin Yamato” he extended his hand

“Thomas” said Tom reciprocating the diplomacy

“I hope I’m not intruding” he said

“No its fine you are welcome” said Tanya

The man sat next to Tom.

“What a troubled soul she must be” he said staring in the distance

“Who?” asked Tanya

“The child, I could see it in her eyes. I don’t remember when I last saw such innocence” he commented

Tom did not comment concerning the issue

“I’m sure she’ll be fine” said Tanya seeing how awkward things would get if both of them remained quiet

“True” he stood up “it was nice meeting you, please if you need anything don’t hesitate” he said and began to walk away but was stopped by Tom

“What is this hunt they speak of?”

Xin turned and looked at the two “ohw you have heard of it, okay where do I start”

“We are the prey, Ceaser and his men are the predators” said a female voice coming from behind Xin

“Its rude intruding you know” commented Xin smiling at Nikita who now stood next to him

“I learned from the best” she smiled back

“I’m Tanya his Thomas and the other one is Theresa” Tanya took the chance to introduce herself

“Wow so you do speak I see, thats nice.” she brushed her hair backwards “well i already introduced myself”

“So have you guys ever participated in the hunt?” asked Tom not paying attention to the unnecessary conversations

“Once” said Xin and his expression slightly shifted from mild to dark “last month”

Tom noticed his reaction and decided not to ask questions that were too deep.

“Its the most gruesome thing I have ever seen” Xin began to speak knowing by how he had reacted it might make it difficult for questions “those men are monsters”

“Taking lives means nothing to them, killing is just a game to them” commented Nikita

“Those bastards” Tom grit his teeth as he recalled how Ceaser thoughtlessly killed that girl in from of them

“Their speed and strength is abnormal, why is that?” asked Tanya “they don’t seem human”

“Thats because they aren’t” said Nikita catching the attention of everyone except Xin who already knew “yes they are not human”

“But when that girl said it Tom I thought she meant it figuratively” said Tanya recalling the time before they met Ceaser

“The only difference between them and those actual undead bastards that are swarming the streets, is that these guys think and are fast” explained Nikita

“Damnit, its one thing after another in this mess of a world” commented Tom

“So how does this hint thing work?” asked Tanya

“Well its simple really. We are in one huge game park here so when its time for the hunt. We are given weapons of our choice and a head start of 30 minutes. After that Ceaser’s men come after us and claim our heads as prices. It becomes one hell of a blood bath I tell you. Even children are not spared” she frowned

“The last hunt we were on we started numbering over 40 but by the time it was done only a handful of us were left. During the first week most died from injuries and others turned into zombies. We are all thats left from that hunt.” Xin explained further

Hearing this made a chill go down Tom’s spine, he imagined how strong these people are if they managed to survive. Looking back at their encounter with Ceaser, no one should be able to survive an encounter with someone like that especially if he goes on a rampage.

“This……is…..not…….good” commented Tanya as she thought of the same thing Tom was thinking

Three days remained until the day of the hunt.
