Chapter 37
Chapter 42
Nadia watched as her friend or rather, Iris‘ friend finished talking. Selene finished talking and then immediately started moving. She got to the door and then turned to the alpha. She gave him a bow, then opened the door and then stepped out.
Nadia stood still as she tried to understand her friend. What had just happened?
She lifted her face to look at her mate’s face. Vance was staring at her with a blank expression.
He waited a little while and then stuck one foot out and then another as he made his way to her. He pointed her to the door that led to their door as he led her to the bed.
“Have a seat, Iris. You and I will probably need to have a talk Vance helped her sit nicely. He even helped her as he gently placed his hand on her back. He rubbed her back before he started talking.
“I think you are overreacting and maybe, just maybe, you need to calm down and think things through” he said as he patted her shoulders and rubbed it even more softly than he did before. Nadia liked his touch. For an alpha who had many battles he had been fighting over the years, he had very soft palms. Nadia shook her head as she tried not to. be distracted from what he was saying. She leaned closer to him as she stared deep into
his eyes.
Nadia had noticed a strand of hair fall from its place. It was now on his forehead, dangling between there and his eyes. He looked really with that on his face but it was a little distracting for both him and her. She waited to see if he would shift it back to its place and when he didn’t, Nadia used her pinky figure to shift it back to its place.
She didn’t think that was enough and so, she pulled her hand backwards as she dipped it into her tongue and took out saliva. She took a generous amount and then rubbed it on his head, where the hair strand was. It was meant to hold his hair in place.
Nadia looked down as she caught Vance staring at her. The corner of his l*ps folded as he stared at her. It was turning into a smile. He looked like he was enjoying what she
doing. His smile also made her smile. They both looked like teenages in love.
Nadia finished ‘arranging‘ her mate’s hair and then collapsed back on the bed as she stared at his face. It was time to talk.
Vance cleared his throat as he began talking.
“I like this new you alot more than the old you, if I am to be honest. I really like her” he said with a wide smile. Nadia smiled too. Those words were refreshing to hear. It meant she no longer had to pretend in front of him. It was such a big relief.
Chapter 42
She sighed to show it. Vance chuckled as he heard her sigh. When he was done, he cleared his throat again as he proceeded to continue with what he had wanted to say.
“Although I am actively trying to understand you and be with you because you are my chosen mate, I don’t think everyone can.
Everyone, especially the people who had been with you for so long and got used to who you were before.” He paused, cleared his throat again and then continued. “The old you, in case you don’t really remember, used to be so strong and masculine. You used to need no help from anyone as you believed you could do it yourself. I loved you but you gave me no chance to show it. It was almost like, in our home, you were the alpha and I was your Luna. Do you understand me?”
Nadia stared at him as she tried to make sense of what he was saying but it was almost impossible. As he spoke, the only thing that rang in her head was the moment she had met Lyra. As she remembered Lyra, she also remembered Selene.
They looked so similar in looks and also in behavior. If one was to look at it clearly, the way Selene looked passionate was the same way Lyra looked. But guess who ended up stabbing her in the back? She could never forgive Lyra nor would she take chances like that again.
Her mind went back to the poisonous drink as she twisted her mouth while she thought.
“Why did the herb make you cough out blood but do nothing to Lyra?” She asked her mate. Vance looked at her a little confused. “Who is Lyra?” He asked her.
Nadia quickly realized her mistake as she shook her head and pretended as though she was guessing names.
“I’m sorry. I’m still not used to the names. I deeply apologize. I meant Selene. Why did you cough out blood but it did nothing to her.. Selene, I mean” A smile followed.
“I think that’s because it wasn’t actually poison. You might have been wrong and if you were wrong, you might have just lost your best friend for life. “Vance spoke with a sad face. His gorgeous l*ps that tightened to make him smile now looked like they were worn upside down.
Tell me why it poisoned you but not her? Why is that?” She asked again as she tried to divert his attention from what had just happened.
“It wasn’t meant for me. It was meant for you, that’s why. You might not remember this but here in Oakland, when a herb isn’t meant for someone, if anyone else drinks it, it could kill them. That’s the way it has always been. It’s our lifestyle and the healers. I’m sure you don’t remember it”

“Oh mercy.” Selene gasped. She might have just messed up but she intended to correct it.
“But come on, it can’t be that bad. I mean, I’m sure Selene didn’t really take it to heart now, did she?”
Vance shook his head as he gave Nadia the reply she needed. You might have just lost. the only friend you had in this life.”
