Chapter 25
Chapter 25
It was half an hour later when they returned home.
Edith, utterly exhausted, went to the bathroom to freshen up while Ruben and Jeanne waited in her room.
They hadn’t had their bedtime story yet!
“Mommy, come lie between us!” Jeanne patted the space she had cleared on the bed, her face full of anticipation as she saw Edith come out.
Edith randomly picked up a storybook.
“What would you like to listen to tonight?” She always made time to be with her kids, no matter how busy she was.
Ruben glanced at the cover. It was Hans Andersen’s fairy tale that they had read countless times.
He found it uninteresting and less engaging than looking at stock market trends.
Jeanne wanted to listen to Snow White.
Edith opened the storybook, her voice soft and gentle, like a warm breeze drifting through the room.
The kids were drossy as the story ended.
Edith placed the book back on the bedside table.
As she stood up, Jeanne softly asked, “Mommy, can we visit Gideon tomorrow?”
“No!”
Edith quickly responded, her voice sharper than she intended.
She composed her expression. “Gideon has someone to look after him. You all should minimize your contact with him from now on, understood?”
Hearing this, Ruben opened his eyes, showing a look of resistance.
He couldn’t understand why Jeanne was so fond of their jerk dad.
Gideon was the one who abandoned them and even bullied their mother. He deserved to be in hospital!
Startled, Jeanne hid under the covers, only her eyes visible, shining like those of a deer.
She blinked her eyes. “But I saw Gideon lying in bed, looking like he’s about to die. It’s so
sad
Edith detected the concern in Jeanne’s tone, a mix of emotions welling up.
Could this be the telepathy between father and daughter?
She didn’t want the kids to have much contact with Gideon, but Jeanne would look at him. intently every time they met.
Edith felt a moment of softness but quickly regained her composure.

Chapter 23
Stay calm, stay calm!’ she thought to herself.
Gideon had a child!
His heart was filled with Danika and his daughter.
Edith changed the subject. “Shane is also in hospital. Instead of worrying about that dying Gideon, you should visit Shane.”
“Right! I haven’t visited Shane yet!” Jeanne looked regretful, temporarily putting Gideon out of her mind.
Realizing she had successfully bluffed her way through, Edith sighed in relief.
“Time for bed. She kissed the kids, turned off the lights, and left.
The darkness of the night suddenly vanished, and the bright light pierced through the floating curtains, illuminating the bedroom.
Edith’s dream was filled with Gideon’s face. She hardly slept well and descended the stairs with dark circles under her eyes.
“Mom, did you get hit by someone?” Jeanne asked in shock.
Edith rolled her eyes as she repeated in her mind. ‘Kids are dumb… Kids are dumb…
Jeanne was her child. She reminded herself to be patient and not to react harshly!
Bonnie laughed heartily nearby.
“I think your mom has been busy last night. Look at those dark circles!”
Edith let them tease her, focusing on her breakfast.
The problem with the laboratory’s nitrogen machine hadn’t been resolved yet, giving her a brief break from the busy work.
After breakfast, Edith took Ruben and Jeanne to visit Shane, who was still recovering from his leg injury, at the hospital.
Her phone rang several times on the way.
Edith glanced at the string of numbers with no saved contact and disconnected the call.
‘Gideon was so annoying!’ she murmured.
It was bad enough that Gideon harassed her in her dreams last night, and now he was calling.
Edith didn’t need to answer to guess what he wanted. Gideon probably wanted to boss her around like a servant at the hospital.
Jeanne also heard the vibrating phone.
“Mommy, aren’t you going to answer it?”
Edith calmly replied, “It’s just a sales call, no need to answer.”
‘She’s lying. I saw it was that jerk dad’s number.

Ruben grumbled in his mind but was pleased with his mom’s approach.
Upon reaching the hospital, the phone finally quieted down.
Entering the ward, Jeanne rushed to the bedside, her voice sweet. “Shane, did you miss me?”
“I miss you every day!” Shane said with a smile, gently pinching Jeanne’s soft cheek, feeling incredibly happy inside.
Sitting on a small sofà nearby, Ruben pulled out his laptop from his backpack and started working intently.
He wasn’t fond of socializing.
Shane scratched his head, looking helpless. “Ruben is still the same.”
“He cares about you a lot, too.”
Edith skillfully peeled fruit. “When can you be discharged?”
“Tomorrow.” Shane tapped his cast-covered leg and chuckled, “Dr. Hayes said I could go home to recuperate. I was about to message you when you came with the kids.”
He wanted to joke about their telepathy but then decided against it and swallowed his words.
Edith focused on peeling the fruit, her voice cheerful and casual.
“Then I’ll come to pick you up tomorrow.”
Shane cherished every opportunity to be together with Edith but worried about bothering her.
He adjusted his gold-rimmed glasses on the bridge of his nose. “Wouldn’t it be too much. trouble for you?”
Edith looked at him with amusement. “We’re close, right? It’s a pleasure!”
Their conversation was overheard by Danika, who was making her rounds.
She entered with a smile. “You two seem so close. Why not try dating? Then the little ones will have a dad.”
“I have a dad,” Jeanne retorted, finding Danika’s comment odd.
Danika immediately apologized, “I’m sorry, I shouldn’t say it.”
“It’s okay. You go ahead with his check-up. We should be heading back.” Edith picked up bag and added, “I’ll come to pick you up tomorrow.”
Shane waved his hand and cautioned. “Take care on your way.”

The room felt much emptier once the three left, and a hint of loneliness crossed his face. Putting the medical file away, Danika casually remarked, “If you like her, go for it. I think Ms. Jones has feelings for you, too. She often asks about you. She is busy with work yet still comes to see you. That’s not how she treat just a friend.”
“Really?” Shane’s eyes twinkled with excitement, somewhat eager to try.
Danika nodded and continued encouraging with a smile, “Really, Mr. Myers, keep it up. I have high hopes for you!”
Chapter 25
After checking Shane, she didn’t linger.
Returning to the office, Danika received a call from the kindergarten, when she learned that Gideon had arranged for Joyce’s transfer.
She promptly called Gideon after dealing with the principal,
“Why didn’t you discuss Joyce’s transfer with me?”
Still in the hospital, Gideon felt his patience wane due to the burning sensation in his stomach.
“I mentioned it last time. Since the kindergarten has already contacted you, just expedite the paperwork in the next few days.”
As he was about to hang up, he heard Edith’s name on the other end of the phone.
“I saw Ms. Jones today and was thinking of taking Joyce over this weekend for a visit. It will be good for her to have a companion at the kindergarten, and now you’re suddenly transferring her.”
Danika spoke with annoyance, but she wasn’t truly angry.
She rambled, “Mr. Myers broke his leg and is in hospital. Ms. Jones has visited him several times and is even picking him up from the hospital tomorrow. They really care for each other, Giddy. When will you ever treat me…”
Gideon coldly interrupted her, “You’re saying Edith went to see Shane at the hospital early this morning?”
“Yes, I was doing rounds, and Ms. Jones was there feeding Mr. Myers fruit, chatting and laughing…” Danika spoke, hearing an indistinct sound of teeth grinding on the other end of the phone, her fingers tightening around her cell phone.
