Chapter 18
Chapter 18
Alexandra sat on the steps. She watched for a while and then fell bored.
There were many young women next to the basketball court cheering for the players. Alexandra looked around for quite some time but could not find a single man that was more good–looking than Julian.
There was nothing much to see.
Alexandra stood up, the lollipop still in her mouth, and started walking somewhere.
The University of Highclere was indeed vast and had lots of resources!
There was a meandering and broad manmade river with an arch bridge made of stone. Several young couples were feeding fish and chatting near that bridge.
Many of the classroom buildings and the library were built in random order. Finally, Alexandra stopped in front of a spherical building.
The reason for stopping was that she heard piano music from a window of that building
Alexandra was drawn to the music as if it was magical. The moment she heard the melodious notes, she felt her soul suddenly become alive..
She could not help but walk toward that building.
She kept on walking toward the building till she found herself standing at the entrance.
The door was closed but unlocked. Alexandra stood in front of the door. She gave it a light push, and the inside came into
clear view.
It was an assembly hall.
Near the entrance was a stage covered with a red carpet. On the stage was a black grand piano.
Seated at the piano was a young woman in a white dress. However, the piano was in the way, and Alexandra could not see the pianist’s face.
The music was coming from that piano.
Alexandra stood at the door, mesmerized by the music,
The next section of the melody even appeared as if it was branded in Alexandra’s mind. She closed her eyes, letting the melodious music dance in her mind.
Her soul suddenly felt a profound sense of satisfaction. It was a sense of joy. She felt like she had returned to the home of her dreams.
And all of that was given to her through this string of musical notes.
While Alexandra was still mesmerized by the music, she suddenly heard footsteps nearby.
It was quickly followed by a hand pushing Alexandra away. “Who are you?” asked the owner of the hand. “Why are you blocking the door? Are you a watchdog?”
That push woke Alexandra from her dreams. She stumbled forward and almost fell from the steps.
A few young women marched in through the door next to Alexandra.
The piano sound stopped abruptly.
Alexandra could not hold back her curiosity and walked into the hall.
Leading the group was a young woman in a bright blue dress and four–inch heels.
She looked haughty and had thick makeup.
This group of young women wore expensive clothes. The dresses looked similar to the dress Julian had given to Alexandra for the banquet she had attended.
Before Alexandra finished checking them out, the young woman in the bright blue dress walked up to the piano and glanced at it. Then, she looked down at the young woman sitting on the piano bench and said, “Emery Walters, why are you practicing again? Haven’t you heard? This year’s piano solo at the Freshmen Night is already given to Kelly. Why are you still practicing so hard?”
The other young women jeered without holding back.
Alexandra felt indignant for Emery, who was getting mocked. Alexandra took two steps forward and finally took a good look at Emery’s face.
Emery’s delicate eyes resembled stars in the night sky. Her facial features were not stunning, but she was still considered at natural beauty. She did not have thick makeup like the group of bullies. Probably, she only applied some skincare products. Her demeanor was quite similar to Alexandra’s.
At this moment, Emery’s face looked very tense. She had pressed her small, round lips into a thin pink line.
Emery’s eyes were bright like crystals. She looked very hurt.
Just then, a young woman in a baby blue traditional dress walked over. This young woman was prettier and more refined than the first. Her hair was long, and there was elegance in the way she walked and moved her hands.
She spoke gently to the young woman in the bright blue dress. “Martha, don’t talk to Emery like that. She played very well, much better than before.
The other young women started to protest.
One said, “When has Emery ever beat Kelly in the annual piano competitions?”
“She’s right!” said another. “Emery, why don’t you take a good look at yourself? How could you still think of playing the piano in your condition? What a joke!”
The young woman in the bright blue dress was Martha Connolly. When Martha heard the others supporting her, she felt even fuller of herself.
On the other hand, Emery was no longer able to bear the mockery while sitting on the piano bench.
Alexandra was feeling perplexed. Emery’s piano playing was very good, but why didn’t she fight back?
Alexandra walked forward and went up to the stage. She took a glance at Emery who was crying and then at the other young women. Alexandra spoke up in Emery’s defense. “Why are you making fun of her?” she asked the other young women. “If you all are so good, come up here and play! Are all of you better than her?”
The young women were shocked at first. Even Kelly Gilligan, the one in a traditional dress, raised her eyebrows. The group of young women looked at each other. None of them knew the young woman without any makeup on.
However, the wealthy young women took one look at Alexandra, and they knew instantly that she was not in the same social class as them.
Any one of the wealthy young women’s hairpins was worth more than Alexandra’s entire family assets.
One of the young women sneered, “Who is this country bumpkin?”
“Yeah,” said another young woman. “I didn’t know that Ms. Walters has a friend from such a social class. Ms. Walters is indeed
a kind–hearted woman. She’s always taking sides with poor commoners!”
Martha raised her eyebrows and gave the sudden intruder a sidelong look. Martha could tell almost at once that Alexandra was, at the very best, a philomath from a poor county.
Hence, Martha did not show any respect for Alexandra. Martha took a step forward. “Who are you?” she asked. “What business is it to you whether I play better than her or not?”
Alexandra was fuming mad. What sort of crazy place was Highclere City?
Besides having a father like Peter who did not want his biological daughter, there was also a group of wealthy women who liked to bully the weak and poor!
However, Alexandra was not the type who was easily bullied. She put her hands on the sides of her waist, unwilling to back down. “I am who I am and I’m proud of it! I’m Alexandra Doherty!” she said. “You don’t have to play, and I already know that you can’t play anything decent! You’re all jealous of her. That’s why you’re all rambling nonsense here!”
Now, even Kelly could not stop herself. She covered her mouth and giggled silently.
“Oh replied Martha. Then, she looked at Emery, whose face was streaked with tears. “So, Emery, since you can’t find your place among the socialites in Highclere City, you decided to hang out with a country bumpkin like Alex… Alexandra Doherty?” asked Martha. “Aren’t you an embarrassment to the Walters family?”
Suddenly, Emery went from crying in shame to being furious. She shouted at Martha, “Enough! All of you, just shut up! I’m not playing!”
Everyone suddenly went silent.
Then, almost immediately after that, someone sneered. Then, Martha said, “Huh! Even the limping kitten is angry!”
Emery got up from the piano bench. That was when Alexandra noticed Emery pick up a white wooden walking stick beside the piano and hobbled away from the piano bench, while Martha and the other young women stared.
Alexandra also stared at her in shock.
Alexandra did not know that Emery had problems with her right leg
