The Marriage That Never Was (Leonard and Lisa )

Chapter 58

Chapter 58

“You’re back in Queenston?” Lisa was pleasantly surprised.

Celine remained silent before saying, “I’ve been back for half a month now and have been working as a food courier.”

“You didn’t tell me you were back. Are we friends or not?” Lisa pretended to be upset. Sᴇaʀ*ᴄh the FɪndNøvel.ɴᴇt website on Gøøglᴇ to access chapters of novels early and in the highest quality.

“I’ve been swamped.” Celine’s voice carried a tone of exhaustion. “Let’s talk later. I’m getting off work early today. Where do you live?”

“Do you want me to pick you up?” Lisa said with a smile. “I got a new car recently. I’ll take you out for a spin tonight, and we can grab a midnight snack along the way. My treat.”

“Sounds good. Thanks for the meal then,” Celine said sincerely and was genuinely happy for Lisa.

At 8:30 in the evening, Celine sent Lisa a voice message, “I’m delivering a cake to the Cuisson Hotel near your place. Meet me there. We can go for a snack once I’ve dropped off the cake.”

“Are you leaving your bike at the hotel?”

“No way, I’m not allowed to. I’ll take the subway instead of my bike.”

“Okay, I’ll head over now.”

Cuisson Hotel was about four miles away from the apartment. It seemed far, but it was still within the northern part of

Queenston.

Celine, born and raised in Queenston, had heard people discussing the prestigious Cuisson neighborhood-where the wealthy and influential reside. Rumor had it that when it was completed, the price of a single unit was in the millions.

Her classmates used to mock that only fools would buy such expensive houses.

All the units sold out on the day of the property’s release. It proved there were always more rich people than one could imagine, while the number of ordinary and less fortunate remained plenty too.

Lisa parked by the side of the road and walked to the hotel entrance. After waiting for about five minutes, Celine swiftly walked into view carrying a luxurious double-tiered cake.

Lisa almost failed to recognize her friend. The tall and beautiful Celine used to have glossy black hair. She had a cool vibe about her that attracted attention as she strolled through the campus, even when she put no effort into dressing up.

At this current moment, Celine was much thinner and had become significantly tanned. She wore a yellow delivery person uniform and looked disheveled.

Lisa almost did not recognize her and exclaimed, “Celine, have you been working in the mines?! How’d you let yourself get like this?”

Celine replied, “I’ve been working part-time to earn money for my tuition fees.”

“Didn’t you work part-time for the year’s first half to earn enough money? Besides, just let me know if you don’t have enough. I can always lend you the money. Is it worth tiring yourself out like this?”

“It’s a long story. Let me deliver the cake first. We can talk later,” Celine hurriedly replied.

After the brief exchange, Celine proceeded toward the hotel entrance. Two stringent-looking guards were at the entrance, and they thoroughly checked the delivery order before allowing her to enter.

Lisa thought it would take only ten minutes for Celine to complete the delivery, but Celine had yet to appear even after half an hour. She started to worry and called Celine.

The phone rang for a long time before Celine finally answered, “Lisa, I-”

“Why are you answering your phone?! I want my money back!” An intense voice sounded in the background. A loud clatter echoed, seemingly from the phone being dropped on the ground, and the call dropped.

“I’m a friend of that girl who was delivering the cake earlier,” Lisa anxiously explained, “It seems like something happened to her upstairs. Do you know which floor she was delivering that cake to?”
