Chapter 19
“Hey, enough with the arguing,” Suddenly, a policewoman spoke, “Is this the necklace you mentioned?”
All eyes turned toward the policewoman holding a sparkling blue diamond necklace in her white-gloved hand.
“Yes, that’s it! That’s it!” Michelle eagerly rushed to retrieve the necklace. “Where’d you find it? Was it in this woman’s room?
“I
Lisa rolled her eyes.
The policewoman pointed to the living room. “It was under that sofa.”
Michelle angrily glared at Lisa, saying, “How clever of you! You feared we’d search your room, so you hid the necklace under the sofa to retrieve it later! Truly, the most dangerous place is the safest!”
“What’s wrong with you?!” Finally, Lisa had enough of Michelle’s shenanigans. She clenched her fists so tightly that her veins were about to burst.
“Lisa, why are you speaking to Michelle like that? Can’t you be more polite?” Jeffrey chided.
“Excuse me, but has your wife ever been polite to me?” Lisa locked eyes with Michelle. “First, she accuses me of hiding it in my room, and now she claims I hid it under the sofa. Take the necklace and scan it for fingerprints. I’ll willingly surrender if you
find my prints on it.”
“Well, you’re so smart. Maybe you wore a glove or something.” Michelle curled her lips.
The policewoman who found the necklace could no longer tolerate the family’s arguing. She said, “That’s your cat, right?”
“Yes, the cat’s mine.” Michelle nodded.
The policewoman continued, “I noticed it likes to jump on the sofas and tables. It’s possible the cat accidentally knocked over the necklace box while playing on the table. The box was open when I found the necklace next to it.
“If someone had intentionally hidden the necklace, they would have concealed it more carefully.”
Everyone looked at the cat, which quickly jumped onto the table. A long silence hung in the air immediately after.
Lisa glanced at the cat, saying, “Now it’s evident I didn’t steal it.”
“Who knows if you did that on purpose,” Michelle muttered under her breath, but her husband pulled her
“Enough! Stop talking!”
away.
David shot Michelle a stern look. He felt humiliated by her baseless accusations and stepped forward. He leaned on his cane and said, “I apologize, officers. I called you here today for a misunderstanding. Everyone must be tired, so why don’t we all go in and have coffee?”
The leading officer responded, “No need. We must handle such matters since it’s our duty. We’ll take our leave now that we’ve uncovered the truth.”
David’s invitation to stay was out of politeness, but since they wanted to leave, he hoped they could depart as soon as possible.
Less than a minute after the police left, Leonard noticed a pen on the table, which one of the officers must have forgotten.
“Dad, I’ll return this to them,” Leonard said, walking out with the pen.
As he approached them, he overheard the officers whispering, “That’s why marrying into a wealthy family isn’t always ideal. It may seem beautiful on the outside, but on the inside… tsk tsk.”
“Exactly. This family is a bit unreasonable, especially Mrs. Parker. I saw her on TV before and thought she was quite elegant. She was so irrational today.”
“Tell me about it. That Leonard guy was just as bad. It was funny how he thought his wife loved money so much that she’d be the thief. Of course, the world would be full of thieves if that were the case.”
Chapter
“That guy probably loves money more than his wife. She was right when she said his life revolves around money. Did you see that Michelle chick? Her diamond earrings were priceless.”
“What did you guys think about Lisa? Her clothes looked cheaper than mine, and she wore no jewelry.”
