I tried to ignore Z ade’s words but when I woke up the next day, they were all I could think of. I went out excited for training only to find Landon sitting in the living room and biting down on an apple. He didn’t notice my presence immediately and it wasn’t until I was standing directly behind him that he turned to me.

“Are you okay?” I asked and he nodded. “Shouldn’t we be getting ready for training?”

“Training was canceled,” I was stunned by his words.

I never wanted to train in the first place but I had been looking forward to it with Landon. He was fun and I enjoyed spending time with him. I had a feeling there was more to it but I didn’t want to think about it too much. I was content with enjoying Landon’s company as a friend because I knew that was all it was ever going to be.

“Did something happen?” I asked and he shook his head. “Please tell me if I did something wrong. I apologize if I did.”

“This isn’t about you,” he cut me off as he stood to his feet. “Zade canceled it because he said your chores are enough of an exercise,” he spoke the words as if they burned him. “I tried to discourage him but he is the Alpha after all, I’m sorry, Megan.”

He placed a comforting hand on my shoulder and walked away leaving me standing there in complete shock and confusion. I realized that this was him making good on his promise. He must have noticed that I enjoyed training and it didn’t bode well with his plans to make me suffer so he took that away from me. I felt tears burn the back of my eyes and I had to blink them away. I refused to cry over Zade, I refused to allow him break me.

I wiped at the stray tear that slipped down my face and squared my shoulder. I knew there was nothing I could do to get training back save for begging Zade and I remembered what happened the last time I tried to make a deal with him. It was impossible to beat Zade at his game so I needed to change up the rules a bit. I was going to find a way to ensure that I didn’t lose this battle. I was already going to lose my life in the end, I didn’t have to lose everywhere else too.

I made

my way over to his room expecting to see Anna but she was nowhere to be found. I began the chores without her and I was already halfway done when she finally arrived. She ignored me as if she were not late to doing her work and instead of helping me, she just crossed her legs and watched me. I didn’t want to pick a fight with her so I just kept on doing what I was doing.

I ended up cleaning the entire wing by myself without any help from her. The only reason I didn’t mind much

was because I didn’t see Zade once. It gave me an unspoken level of peace. I left to return the cleaning equipment and I was on my way back to my room when I realized I had left my handkerchief in the room. I reluctantly went back and when I got there, I felt him. His scent was strong and I knew he was in the room but that wasn’t what had me stopping in my tracks- it was the anger in his voice as he spoke.

“What the f uck are you doing?” he spat at Anna. I gently placed the bucket on the ground so I could get closer

and see them.

When I rounded the door, I saw Anna with the first few buttons of her dress undone and standing directly in front. of Z ade’s bed. It was clear that she had tried or was trying to seduce him but I couldn’t tell. Zade had his back to me which I was grateful for but it also meant that I couldn’t see whether or not he was contemplating her advances.

“I was just doing my chores, Alpha,” her voice reeked of sultriness.

“Where is Megan?”

“I don’t know, sir, she left me to do all the work by myself. I tried to call her but she just wouldn’t listen to me,” she pouted as she took a step closer to him making sure to push up on her toes in an attempt to get his attention on her cleavage.

Zade still didn’t say a word and I could tell it annoyed her because she took another step closer. That proved to be too much into his space because he wrapped his hand around her neck. It was different from the way he did with me, this time, he was trying to choke the life out of her. She clawed at his hand but he didn’t let go.

“If you ever come that close to me again then I will kill you, are we clear?” he asked and she nodded frantically and he finally released her.

She went into a coughing fit immediately and I almost felt bad for her. I would have if I still didn’t see the want in her eyes as she looked at him. I couldn’t help but wonder if she was crazy enough to still want a man who had tried to kill her.

“Pot calling the kettle black,” my inner voice nagged as I remembered that Zade had also tried to choke me once and I was currently pregnant with his child and f ucking him.

Anna started to walk away but Zade grabbed her arm. “If you ever try to seduce me like that again, I will make sure that you remember your place. I have no need for an extra w h re, am I understood?’

I was shocked by her bravado. Never in my life would I have imagined speaking to anyone like that. It was demeaning and dehumanizing but Anna didn’t seem to care. It was like she had a one-track mind and as long as she got what she wanted, she didn’t care who she da mned in the end.

“The day I have need for you, you will know,” Zade said finally and that seemed to be enough for her because she walked away.

I wasn’t able to move away from the door in time because she pushed it open and I fell flat on my a ss. Her eyes narrowed at me when she realized that I probably overheard everything. There was anger and embarrassment in her gaze. She opened her mouth to speak but at the last minute, she changed her mind and closed it. She walked away without another word and I was so confused until I saw Zade walk out of the room and settle his eyes on me.

“Are you going to sit there all day?” he asked and I immediately rushed to my feet. “Come in, Megan.”

“I was just leaving.”

He leveled me with a hard look. “I didn’t recall asking.”

I reluctantly followed him into the room and I sighted my handkerchief on the table close to his bed. I wanted to rush over and pick it up but that would have meant walking past him and I was trying to keep as much distance between us as I could. It was hard considering how intensely he was staring at me.

“If this is because Anna said she did the chores alone then she is a liar,” I said quickly wanting to get out of his room as quickly as possible. “I was the one who did it all so if anyone should be punished, it should be her.”

He stayed quiet for a full minute and when I looked up, he was leaning against the wall with his hands crossed over his chest in amusement. “You were listening in, weren’t you?” I didn’t respond to him and he crossed the length of the room to grab my chin. “When I ask a question, you are expected to answer.”

“The door was open and your voices were loud,” I lied. “I was just walking past and I heard you.”

He didn’t believe me- that much was clear. He was staring down at me with a mix of intrigue and something else that I couldn’t put my finger on- it was dark and dangerous and I knew that if I valued my life then I would put as much distance as I could between myself and him but his hand was still gripping my chin and I had nowhere to

go.

“What did you hear?” his voice dropped to a low whisper. When I didn’t respond, he tugged me closer. “Do not make me force an answer out of you.”

“I heard you push her away,” I didn’t know why it was the first thing I said but the corner of his lips quirked up.

“Were you jealous? Did you think I was going to take her up on her offer?” I remained silent. “I should have. If I knew you were listening, I would have. I would have made you come in and watch while I f ucked her like she wanted. What do you think?”

I pushed him off me and he willingly let me. I took a step back and wrapped my hand across my chest. “Stay away from me.”

“That’s impossible, baby and you know it. Now only are you my mate,” he spat the word like it was a curse, “but you are carrying my child and you are living under my roof. We are stuck together.”

I turned on my heels and tried to leave but he was faster and held the door shut with one hand. I couldn’t take it anymore and I whirled on him. “Why are you even doing this? You already took away everything that mattered to me. If you want to f uck the entire world then go ahead, why are you trying to hurt me?”

He smiled widely and stroked my cheek in what could have been mistaken as an affectionate manner but the look in his eye told me it was anything but. “I enjoy watching you break. I want you helpless and if I have to f uck her in your presence to do so, then so be it.”

“If you touch her then I swear I will f uck every guard in this castle as payback,” he was taken aback. The shock was enough for him to take his hand off the door and I used the opportunity to pull it open.

“You wouldn’t dare.”
