Sweet Twins Indulge in Daddy's Love

Chapter 99 Comfort And Disquiet

In her worry that her mother would fall sick from anger, Nancy hastened to calm her.

"Yes, grandma." Nadia looked at them with doleful eyes. She didn't want her grandma or mommy sad.

But she was much too young. She didn't know how to console adults whose emotions seemed far more complicated than what her young heart could understand.

She could only reach out her small hands to stroke her grandma's and then her mom's faces.

At the child's touch, Jade sighed and closed her eyes slowly.

Nancy and Nadia couldn't leave that night. Nancy placed Nadia on a bed to get her settled down. Then she found herself a chair and sat down, watching over her mother's sleeping form.

"Miss Ning, please sleep. I will take care of her," the nurse said with a tremor in her voice.

Nancy grabbed her hand and forced out a smile. "It's alright. You can go to sleep. I'll stay here."

"Thank you very much, ma'am." The nurse was embarrassed from her kindness and left quietly.

In the silence of the room, Nancy assured herself that her mother just had a fright. 'She would be alright,' she told herself.

As she fought to keep her anxiety in check, a hand suddenly shot out and grabbed hers.

A heavy gasp resounded in the ward.

"Mom, what's wrong?" Nancy fled to the switch and turned on the light, and then hurried to her mother's side to grab her hand.

Jade's face had lost color and her hands felt clammy to the touch.

"Help! Help!" Nancy shouted.

Her mind raced as she struggled to make sense of her tangled thoughts. 'What was wrong? Why is she choking on her own breath? Was there something stuck in her throat?' Nancy ran a shaking hand over her back repeatedly in an attempt to soothe her.

Jade lowered her head.

"Mom...1 Her voice cracked, begging for her mother to be alright.

The next moment, the door opened to reveal the doctors.

At once, they checked on the old woman. Nancy's mind was filled with worry for her mother that she had momentarily forgotten her daughter.

Nadia was as pale as death. 'Grandma is very sick. What should I do?' Her young mind struggled under the weight of anxiousness.

She saw a nurse passing by in the corridor and stepped in front of her way. "Auntie, can I use your phone?" she asked.

"Of course, my dear. Do you need to call someone?" The nurse crouched down and looked at Nadia's round, pleading eyes.

"1 want to call Charles Fu," Nadia said, her face serious.

"Ah." The nurse thought that she had misheard at first, but the little looked at her with a steady gaze. "Honey, you can't just call Charles. Besides, I don't even know his phone number..."

"It's okay. I know it." Stretching out her hand, Nadia continued, "Can you please give me your phone?"

The nurse stared at her, convinced that Nadia was making things up, but decided to humor her.

She nodded and handed the girl her phone. "Alright," she said.

To her surprise, Nadia took the phone and dialed a number.

"Daddy." Her small voice wavered as she spoke.

Just then, Charles had come back from the Zhuang family.

He had lunch at the family home at noon and had intended to come back early, but Dorothy held a small party at home with her classmates to celebrate her return.

Drew thwarted Charles' plans this way and made him stay.

He went around from one guest to another, introducing Charles so familiarly as if he was going to be his son-in-law.

At some point, some of Dorothy's classmates even teased him to give her a kiss. She feigned embarrassment but looked up at him with expectant eyes.

"I have caught a cold recently. It would be better for you to keep your distance," Charles evaded coldly.

Dorothy's brows shot up in dissatisfaction, but she recovered quickly. "Oh, I'm sorry to hear that. I'll ask mom to make some ginger soup for you. It'll cure your cold quickly." Her face had an expression of concern as she spoke.

Once again, her classmates took the bait and showered Dorothy with compliments. Everyone praised her for being such a gentle woman, with some even insinuating that she would be the perfect wife. The party stretched on until eleven o'clock. Finally, Drew asked his driver to send Charles home.

Bobby was pouting as he sat in the living room.

Meanwhile, Angelina leaned on the sofa, blinking her eyelids heavily.

"It's late now. Why are you still up?" Charles asked as he changed his shoes at the doorway.

Bobby crossed her arms. "Mommy is not here, and Nadia is not here. I can't fall asleep," he said, his smooth forehead wrinkled in displeasure.

"Your mom didn't pick you up?" Charles asked, frowning.

"Humph!" Bobby snorted. "Why don't you like my mommy anymore? Is it because of that Dorothy lady? Do you want her to be my mother?" The kid's tone was full of accusation as he badgered Charles with his questions.

Charles couldn't help the amusement that crept inside him at his haughty display. "Who said that?" he laughed.

"Then why did you go to her house? And why did you come back so late?" Bobby asked again, evidently unconvinced with his response.

"You are too young to understand. She's my friend. Now that she's back, I have to welcome her. You would do that for your friend too, right?" Charles explained.

"Nancy is a good woman, but she can't live here every day. It's not appropriate," Angelina interjected, opening her heavy eyes lazily.

'I know her. She won't stay even if you ask her." Charles knew Nancy well. She stood everything Angelina had done for the sake of him. Now that he was back, she would rather stay away from her as far as possible so that she wouldn't have to be looked down upon and restricted by Angelina anymore.

"You're talking nonsense. She's as good as a daughter of mine. You know, you should learn from her. You're the only person in the world who dares to ignore your own mother. Nancy would never do that!" Angelina boasted.

"You're the one talking nonsense. It's late. Maybe you're too sleepy to understand what you're saying. Relax. Nobody's ignoring you. Don't take things too seriously, all right? I can almost see a wrinkle growing." "Who do you think is the reason for it?"

Angelina shouted, wearing an offended expression. Charles' taunting was the last thing she wanted to hear. But the man who was the cause of all the gray hair in her head just shrugged off his jacket and hung it up. Then, he walked towards Bobby and said, "Bobby, bath time. Take a shower and go to bed."

He scooped him up in his arms and ignored his mother's indignant lecture.

It was almost midnight when Charles tucked Bobby into bed. He let out a tired breath and took out his cell phone, suddenly remembering that he had meant to call Nancy.

His finger hovered on the "call" button. It was late. If she was already sleeping, the call would disturb her.

Deciding against it, he dragged his feet sulkily to the bedroom.

He had scarcely entered when his phone suddenly rang. It was from an unknown number.

Usually, he would not pick up calls from strangers. However, his mood was down at the moment, and answering the call might distract him from brooding.

He could not have expected Nadia's voice on the phone. "Nadia?" he answered. "It's midnight. Why aren't you sleeping?" he asked in surprise.

"Daddy, we need help. We're at the sanatorium and Grandma is sick. I'm scared." Nadia's broken voice spoke. She burst into tears upon hearing her father's voice.

Charles was immediately agitated. He grabbed a coat and pulled it on as he raced out the door.

"What happened, sweetie? Tell me slowly," Charles asked, trying to calm his daughter. He hated the distress in her voice.

"I don't know," Nadia said between sobs. "Grandma is very sick. Please, Daddy."

Charles moved as fast as his feet could carry him. He hopped inside the car and told the driver to head straight to the sanatorium. Willing himself to calm down, he called Jay, telling him to go to the sanatorium as soon as possible.

Jay had already been sleeping soundly when the call from Charles pulled him awake. The next moment, he was jumping off the bed and putting on his clothes. "Got it. I'll go!"

When he arrived at the sanatorium, he found Nadia sitting alone, her arms around herself. Her cheeks were streaked with dried up tears.

He walked over to her and held her in his arms protectively. "Where's Mommy?"

Nadia pointed at the operating room. "Grandma and mommy are in there."

At this time, the dean came in a hurry.
