Chapter 98 It's Useless
"Mommy, can we come to see grandma tomorrow?" Nadia excitedly asked on the way home. Her eyes glinted a hint of expectation.
"Yeah." Seeing the anticipation in her daughter's eyes, Nancy couldn't help rubbing her head dotingly.
Perhaps it was a good day or Nadia's bright smile, but in whichever case, Nancy didn't sense any bad premonition. Everything was sailing smoothly, and she hoped it could last long. Meanwhile, back in the Ning household...
Fannie burst into fiendish laughter while looking at the photo of Charles with Dorothy.
"Dad, look at your doting daughter. Her dream of marrying a rich man is finally shattered! How could she even dream of becoming a beautiful swan?"
"Fannie, I think it's time we get Jade's shares back. We wouldn't know what's gonna happen," Jill suggested, ignoring the bright mood of her daughter.
"Don't worry. Things haven't been cleared yet. We don't have to act rashly. Although Nancy is softhearted, she won't let you go if you mess with her. And if that happens, we're not gonna get anything at all." Although he stammered, Clark was still able to get his point across.
"Dad, until when are you going to defend her? You know the incident about Nadia. In the end she didn't do anything to me. Besides, Charles left her! She'll never amount to his childhood sweetheart," Fannie scorned, showing her phone to her father to prove her words.
"What should we do?" Amidst her daughter's rant, Jill was more concerned with the money they needed.
"That's easy. All we need to do is to let Nancy transfer the shares to dad. Once he gets it, we can handle everything from there." The triumphant look painted on Fannie's face matched her determined tone. "You know we have been good to you for so many years, Clark. So you have to help us at this critical moment." Jill's voice was coated with arrogance as if she was asking for payback. "What? You shouldn't do that. You know you have no rights over that share." Clark didn't want to add insult to the injury.
"What do you mean? Every day those shares stay with Nancy, it gets useless and useless! We must get our hands on it!" Fannie's voice almost rose to the roof, exhibiting the conviction and boldness in her. Meanwhile, Clark could do nothing but sigh as he looked at his delusional child. It seemed like nothing could stop her from what she was planning.
After a while, she forced him to get in the car in the middle of the night.
Judging from the road they were traversing, he already had an idea where they were headed.
And true enough, not long after, they reached a sanatorium-the very same one where Jade was admitted to.
A sense of nostalgia, coupled with sadness and regret, filled Clark's thoughts.
At the same time, Jade was startled to see the very last person she was expecting. After all, Clark had never visited all these years, so this really came as a surprise. 'Why was he here now?' she wondered.
However, when she saw Jill and Fannie behind him, her confusion turned into utter horror.
"Don't look at us like that! We are old friends, and we know each other very well," Jill retorted with a defensive tone. Then, she went straight over and sat on a chair.
Crossing her legs, she looked at Jade with eyes filled with contempt.
"What are you doing here?" From her bed, Jade disdainfully eyed them one by one. She should warn the nurse not to let anyone in next time.
"What do you think we are here for? For your shares, of course! Nancy is a famous doctor now, and she's not interested in business. So I advise you to give your shares to us. We need it more than your daughter does!
Fannie surly uttered while crossing her arms across her chest. Her domineering stance only turned Jade agitated. "Clark, Clark..." the latter called with a fragile tone.
The woman was past her prime and weakened by her sickness. She could not even go against Jill, let alone her feisty daughter, who stood so arrogant before her.
"Say something, Clark." Noticing the hint of pity and sadness beaming in his eyes, Jill was quick to order the poor man.
"Jade, I know it's my fault, but since things have come to this, you'd better give up your shares and do as they say," Clark uttered helplessly, after which he bowed his head and stuck his eyes on the floor out of shame. At this point, he felt like a useless and futile man.
More than that, he knew Fannie very well. If Jade didn't agree and do otherwise, no one knew what her daughter would do. She was capable of anything, and he had seen it himself.
"No, no! There's no way I'd do that. Clark, I'm going to transfer my shares to Nancy." With pleading eyes, Jade stared at her former beau, hoping he would listen and help her.
For old time's sake, she still hoped he'd save her and her daughter.
However, even if he wanted to, his hands were tied. More than that, those two were too desperate to stop their conniving plans.
"It's useless to beg my father. In fact, it's useless to beg anyone now. If you want to stay alive, you have to give up the shares now," Fannie threatened in between gritted teeth. Her sharp eyes pierced through Jade's dwindling energy.
"No, no, I won't. I will never do that!" Even with the immense pressure and not to mention her current condition, Jade was still able to shake her head crazily and resist.
"Well, it's not up to you now, isn't it?!" When Jill took out the transfer contract and seal, Fannie forcefully pressed Jade's finger on the seal to mark her fingerprint on the deal.
"You robbers! Robber! Robbers! You'll never get away with this!" With trembling hands and lips, Jade shouted at the top of her lungs. She was too frustrated that she almost shed a tear now that they finally took what was rightfully hers.
"Don't say that. These shares should belong to us. You're just returning them to us! Thank you for your cooperation, Jade." With an exultant smug on her face, Jill put away the contract while Fannie pushed Clark and stormed out of the ward, leaving Jade completely helpless on her bed.
"Don't go..." Jade was too unwilling to give away her shares. So, gathering all her remaining strength, she grabbed Jill by the hem of her clothes to stop her from leaving.
"Let me go!" Jill resisted and pulled her clothes too hard, dragging Jade along with it. As a result, the latter fell off the bed and on the ground.
"You deserve it! Mom, let's go!" Fannie uttered out of urgency before pushing Clark and leaving with him.
Jill raised her leg and landed a kick on the poor woman. "If you have the strength, then go to bed by yourself. If not, you can sleep on the floor tonight."
"Don't leave. My shares..." This time, Jade couldn't help but cry desperately. With her half disabled body, there was no way she could go after them. Tears began streaming down her face.
"Somebody...please help..." She crawled towards the door while screaming, hoping that someone would pass by and see her rather a pitiful situation.
"Madam, what's happened to you?" asked the attending nurse in surprise. She just went to take a shower, and immediately saw Jade on the floor after coming back.
"My shares, my shares!" Jade continued shouting desperately while ignoring the nurse.
The nursing assistant was only in her twenties, and although she was panicking, she still did a great job in putting Jade back on the bed. However, she had no idea what the woman was yelling about. So instead, she hurriedly called Nancy to inform her about her mother.
At this moment, Nancy had just bathed Nadia. When she received the call from the nursing assistant, she was utterly startled and horrified.
"I'll be right there." After quickly dressing Nadia, she ran out of the apartment along with her daughter.
The cold breeze brushed against her skin while her hair flapped with the wind.
And at this point, Nancy didn't mind the weather at all. She was at a loss. If anything terrible happened to her mother, she wouldn't know what to do.
More than that, the moment the nurse mentioned the shares, she already had a hunch that it had something to with Jill and Fannie.
'Those two greedy witches! They are just too desperate, aren't they?!' she cursed silently.
As she thought of her evil stepsister and her conniving mother, Nancy almost called Charles several times. But every time she thought of it, she struggled hard to refrain herself from doing so.
'This does not concern him at all.
Besides, he's probably with Dorothy right now doing God-knows-what.'
Those thoughts lingered on her head, eating her every time she let herself dwell into them.
The more Nancy thought about it, the more perplexed she became. Instead, she put the phone into the hamper and decided to look in the sanatorium first.
When she arrived, she was greeted by the utter desperation painted on her mother's face. She not only looked frantic, but weaker and paler at the same time too.
"They did what?!" Nancy choked down her anger and asked.
"It's them, Nancy. I'm sorry. I failed to keep the shares for you. I'm such a useless mother!" Jade blamed herself, pulling her hair aggressively as if she was going crazy any moment now.
"Mom, I'm not blaming you. Those are just some useless shares. I don't care about them. It's all right. Don't worry!" Nancy hugged her mother lovingly while spatting those comforting words. However, at the back
of her mind, she was already cursing Fannie and Jill.
