Chapter 9
~Kyle~
I kept ruffling the little piece of paper in my hands as I stared at the yellow envelope still unopened on the table where I last left it three or maybe four days ago. I kept tell myself I would opened it but every time I got close I would chicken out and walk away. Levi tried to get me to at least take a peek but I just couldn’t get the nerve so he left it alone. I glance down at the paper in my hands for what seemed like the thousandth time. I found it in my pants pocket the morning after the night I was at the Nightly Howl with Pope though it was all to blurry to remember.
Come see me when things start getting out of control and you want to know what you are, come back to the Nightly Howl but it must be before the full moon.
Pope.
It didn’t give away much of anything but it had me curious as to what he would know about me? What he had to say and why before the full moon? Sighing I stuffed the paper back in my pocket and walked over to open the front door for Lakota as he raced out. I looked around the empty apartment since Levi was at work or maybe with Matt I didn’t know so I decided to explore. There wasn’t much to find in the small place but I noticed a door the other day and was curious as to what was in it. So I slowly made my way to the end of the hall, reached for the knob and opened it.
The room was dark so I felt along the wall till I touched the light switch with the tip of my fingers and my breath caught at what I saw. My wide eyes took in all it could as I stepped inside the little red room. The room was filled with canvases, some hung on the walls; some were piled up against one another on the wall. The room had filled with a powerful smell of paint and fabric. I moved further in to where a canvas sat on a wood stand in the middle of the room. The only think on the paper was a black tree in the upper corner like it was seen from far away but the rest of the canvas was colored in pale grays, ivory and light clay colored browns.
Frowning at it unable to figure out what it meant but it was a beautiful picture. I roamed around some more moving paintings to see more behind them. I noticed most of these paintings were of a darker nature. He used a lot of blacks, grays, whites and reds. One painting caught my eyes as I moved another piece out of the way, frowning I pulled this one out and held it in front of me.
It was a pair of gray eyes that took up the whole canvas mostly. They were emotionless, and hard; a sweep of gold raining over them lightly. A shiver ran down my back at the familiar feeling. Blinking, I softly placed it back onto the ground and stood straight making my way from the room, softly closing the door behind me just in time to hear Levi come in through the front door with Lakota trotting behind him. He glanced up at me when he made his way to his room and stopped.
“Oh hey” he smiled.
“Hey” he looked behind me at the door then back to me.
“What are you doing?” I shook my head.
“Nothing just roaming” I grinned. He nodded and opened his door,
“So I know I haven’t been around much lately so I wanted to invite you to dinner with the guys and me. You want to come?” his voice was drifting as he moved further in his room so I came to stand in the door frame watching him pull out clothes.
“Yeah that sound cool” I muttered, staring at him bend over as he untied his shoes. Lakota shook me out of my trance when he trotted past me and up on Levi’s bed making himself comfortable.
“No, get off” I ordered stepping in the room. I heard Levi laugh and shake his head.
“He’s fine” he said running his fingers in Lakota’s fur softly.
“So what time are we leaving?” I asked.
“In about an hour” he glanced at me with a tender expression. “Have you opened the package?” I sighed, not this again.
“No” he stood and stepped in front of me.
“Kyle you have to open it sooner or later, we still need to get you a job and we can’t do that if your information is still locked away in an envelope.” He had no idea how much that hit home, I knew he was right though and I should stop being a baby so I just nodded my head.
“I’ll do it tomorrow k” his brown eyes stared at me for a long moment before he shrugged.
“Alright” then he turned towards the bathroom, the shower started and I took that as my cue to leave.
So here we stood in front of Olive Garden, waiting for everyone to show up. It was about eight thirty when Levi’s friends finally made their appearance; Jazz, Finney and her boyfriend Jace, Logan and Gab and of course Matt show up almost at the same time. I stood back as they all said their hello’s not really comfortable with them all still, though I couldn’t get away from Jazz who crushed me in a bear hug.
“Oh Kyle it’s been too long!” I rolled my eyes, god this girl is beyond annoying.
“Alright everyone lets go in.” Levi ordered.
We all were seated, the table was filled with loud murmurs as they all conversed with one another but I sat quietly starring at the menu however not really reading anything. I couldn’t explain it but I felt really weird, like a pull but I didn’t know to what. I wanted to stretch my body out although I knew that wouldn’t be enough. Levi shifted beside me his arm brushing against mine as he laughed at something someone said and a fire shot through my body so fierce I jumped and gasped out loud. Heads snapped to me in curiously all but Levi who kept his eyes on the table his hands fisted tightly.
“Damn Kyle you good?” Logan asked with a frowned. I glanced up at him clearing my throat and shifting in my seat.
“Yeah, of course” I smiled reassuringly as they went back to laughing and talking.
I was trying to conceal my heavy breathing the best I could but it was like that one little touch from Levi opened up a door I couldn’t close. His smell, apples and pine over powered the entire restaurant, causing my head to spine with delight. I remember rolling in his bed the other day inhaling his sweet scent, how intoxicating it was and now it was ten times of what it was before. The slightest move he made, made me want to take him into my arms and bury my face into his neck and sink my teeth into the tender flesh. I shook my head at the disturbing thought.
‘What the hell is wrong with me!?’ I snapped at myself.
“I’ll be your waitress for the night can I start you guys off with any drink or breadsticks?” a young female voice said. I turned my head to the side to see some girl with a pad and pen standing next to me. I glared at her proximity, did she have to stand so close. A rumble was starting in my chest as I was tempted to yell at her to stand somewhere else when a hand slid into mine under the table and everything in me stopped. The rage, the constant hum since I came out tonight was relapsed by a tingling sensation that had me relaxed into a calm and peaceful state.
Glancing down I saw Levi’s smaller hand in mine, making everything ok. Curling my fingers around his I fought the smile fighting to find a way on my face.
“Sir is there something you’d like?”
“Sir?”
“Kyle?” I snapped my head up to look at Levi.
“Yeah?” he nodded his head in the waitress’s direction. I looked at her expectant face.
“What?” I glared, cross at her interrupting my moment with levi. She gave me a tight smile.
“Would you like to order or do you need more time?” she asked rudely. I gritted my teeth and looked down at my menu for a moment.
“Chicken Alfredo’s fine.” I spoke curtly and handed her the menu which she snatched from me
“Thank you” she rolled her eyes and marched off, I glowered at her retreating form in distaste.
The table went back to talking while I focused mostly on how Levi’s hand was still in mine. I didn’t want to let go it felt like if I did my world would fall through the cracks and I’d lose him.
“So Kyle, tell us about yourself?” Jazz asked moments later. I frowned in her direction.
“Yeah, you’re a total mystery to us” Finney agreed and my hand tightened in Levi’s.
“Well there’s nothing really to tell.” I voiced vaguely.
“Oh come on give us something” Finney pressed and Jazz nodded eagerly.
“What’s it like in Portland, how did you meet Levi? Did you date?” Jazz spouted off questions and I was getting irritated.
“I don’t know” I said through clenched teeth.
“Come on Kyle!” again she pushed.
“Guys leave him alone ok he doesn’t want to talk.” Levi saved me once again from making a fool of myself. Both girls pouted and slumped back in their chairs.
“Fine, then you tells us” they brightened gazing at him. Levi sighed and turned his head from them towards Logan as he said something.
“Alright who orders the Shrimp Alfredo?” the waitress came back with the food handing us each our plates. This made Levi let my hands go to start eating and I swore I almost whimpered at the loss.
For once the table was sort of quiet as everyone stuffed their faces with food though I kept sneaking peeks at Levi as he would lean in close to Matt who was whispering to him. I gritted my teeth suddenly holding myself back from shooting from my chair, grabbing him and slamming his face in his food. I blinked in shock at the thought, why was I so angry?
Shaking my head I just tried to ignore my sudden urges and focused solely on my meal but when I saw Matt lean in and kiss Levi on lips all reasoning and restraint went out the window. I was out of my seat letting the chair crash to the floor in pieces and I had the front of Matt’s shirt in my hands all in the span of two seconds.
“Kyle!” Levi screamed jumping to his feet.
I ignored him as something inside of me took over completely; it was like I was locked into my own body looking out as my body was taken over.
“You ever lay your filthy mouth on my mate again and I’ll rip your face clean off you little f*ck!” a growl sounded thunderously and I barely noticed it was me.
“Ah” I heard screams as the windows vibrating with the sound.
“Kyle please!”
I loomed over Matt threateningly, I saw the fear in his black eyes and it gave me some kind of sick satisfaction. A hand closed over my arm pulling me towards them with a strength that caught me off guard causing me to growl until I faced Levi’s worried gaze as he looked at me.
“Kyle no” he shakily whispered to me in concern. I was once again in control of my body and I knew I had done something really bad. Glancing around the restaurant I noticed all the scared and curious stares from all Levi’s friends and the rest of the people eating. I gulped as I started to pant in confusion I finally let go of Matt’s t-shirt.
What did I do? What am I! I gazed at Levi one more time backing away from them all slowly though Levi followed my steps till I shook my head. With that I turned from them all and ran out, far from those people, far from that bastard Matt and his friends, and especially far from Levi and his worried brown eyes.
I ran not knowing where I was going just needed to move, needing to run though I couldn’t get the full pleasure out of it, I was missing something important; freedom. I wasn’t free and I didn’t know how to fix it but then again I haven’t felt free for a while now.
The moment I finally stopped to catch a breath I knew why, there in front of me was the boisterous bar the ‘Nightly Howl’. Breathless I stood straight and glare up at the neon sign before striding confidently into the darkly lite room looking for the one person who could give me an answer.
“Well it’s about time, you almost missed your deadline” his deep husky voice sounded and I turned to my left to see him sitting with a woman straddling his lap as he started up at me, his eyes a shockingly unusual piercing gold.
I started at him in awe as he patted the woman to get off who did reluctantly.
“So are you ready to know?” he asked finally standing in front of me. I took a deep breath and looked his square in the eyes causing him to raise a brow at me in amusement.
“Yes” I raise my chin a hair, trying to make my voice sound strong when I didn’t feel like it.
Pope smirked deviously.
“Good,” he wrapped an arm around my shoulder and led me further into the bar. “Let’s get started.”
