Runaway Wolf (Blue Moon Series) (Book 3)

Chapter 14

~Kyle~

The drive was smooth as the sun rose high in the blue sky. I didn’t have a destination to where I was going I just chose to go straight. I passed through a large city then a few small towns on the empty morning streets. I stopped to get gas once more since last night. I pulled up to a pump, I was surprised how effortlessly I parked by it since I hadn’t drove a car before now… well that was probably a lie. In my old life I would think I knew how to drive so I guess it was like riding a bike. Sighing I glanced at Levi who was snuggled up in a large jacket I laid over him a while ago, his seat was pulled all the way back so he was laying down.

I had a strong urge to reach over and brush the wild messy hair from his face but I controlled it and got out. I heard a whine from Lakota as I shut the door quietly, I placed my finger to my lips and he lay his head back down on his paws watching me walk towards the building to pay for the gas. I reached into my pocket for the cash I had left over from the last gas trip.

A girl stood behind the counter and I told her the number of the pump I needed. Slowly I began roaming around the store looking for snacks that we could eat. I heard the sound of a bell jingle as someone else came in from outside. I didn’t look I just grabbed a couple sweets, bags of chips with a couple waters. I went back to the counter and watched the lady ring up all food. Right when she was done I felt a presence behind me and I glanced back to see a large guy with a black t-shirt and jeans with dark shades on top of his head.

He looked at me and nodded his head in greeting with a gentle smile so I did the same and turned back. The lady handed me the bag of food and I took it and left to fill the tank. Once that was all done I pulled out of the gas station.

I drove down a bunch of woodland areas, just a vast expansion of trees everywhere I drove. It was peaceful actually. I felt like it was home, all that green made me want to jump out of my skin just like the other day when I attacked Matt. My good mood changed with the thought of Matt. I wonder if anyone noticed if he was gone or not. Or if they noticed Levi and I were missing. Sighing I continued down the highway when I heard Lakota whine. I frowned and looked back at him to see him standing on the seat looking out the back window. I glanced up to see a large black car behind us but didn’t think much of it so I looked back out the windshield but Lakota’s whines turned into growls.

Living with this wolf from the moment I woke up in the forest so long ago I’ve learned to rely on him to help me survive all this time so that means I’ve learned all his warning sounds and this was a clear warning something wasn’t right. Once again I looked behind me to see Lakota’s hair raised on end and his ears back with his teeth bared in aggression, still glaring out the back window. The black car was much closer now so I pushed further on the pedal to get away from it but it was right on my tail and I realized then I was being chased.

“Shit” I muttered and looked over to Levi who was still sleeping peacefully, snuggled warm under the jacket. I hated waking him from this position but this was an emergency.

“Levi” I said but he didn’t move. I glanced in the review mirror to see the car gaining.

“Levi!” I said much louder and he finally moved cracking his sleepy eyes opened to squint at me.

“Yeah” his voice was husky as he sat his seat back up in the right position and rubbed his eyes.

“Were being chased” I stated and this rid him of his grogginess.

“What!?” he turned back to see the car. “Lose him” he demanded.

“Yeah, one problem, I’m not the world’s best drive Levi. All I’ve been doing has been going straight.” he furrowed his brow with worry.

“Dammit” he leaned over and buckled himself in.

“Just go Kyle, we have to lose them or were f*cking screwed.” Taking a deep breath I prayed to whomever out there that we would survive this.

I slammed on the gas and the engine roared with new life. We flew down the non to busy highway which I was grateful for. The car behind us lag a bit in surprise but quickly caught up and it became a real live car chase.

Levi’s car zoomed down the road with amazing speed I had to be extra careful with where I was going, just because the highway was sort of empty didn’t mean there weren’t cars. For what seemed like hours but was probably minutes we raced on, I glanced in the review mirror once more to see he was right on me.

“He’s faster than us” I stated with concern and Levi cursed.

“Just keep going” and I did.

I jerked the car around someone in front of me with quick agility, I didn’t even know I had, and swerved on to the wrong side of the road for a moment and then back in front of the pesky car in our way. I could hear the pounding of our hearts as we raced for our lives, the black car just following our example but continued to drive on the left hand side. His car was fast as he pulled up close to ours his window was rolled down. Then I realized it was the tall man from the gas station.

“Shit! Move Kyle” Levi yelled but it was too late. The guy pulled out a huge gun and pointed it at us and fired. The sound of metal hitting metal rang in my ears with a deadly vengeance and I cringed into myself. Windows shattered around us and I felt the slice of a shard cutting my face.

“Hit him!” Levi screamed ducking low.

“What do you mean!” I yelled over the gun shots. Growling Levi reached over and took the wheel in his hand and with a powerful jerking motion sent his car ramming into the black one. The crashed jerked us all but I righted the wheel and tried to push further on the gas but the pedal was already on the floor.

I heard Lakota’s whines and growls from the backseat as he took cover on the floor. For a moment I thought we were getting away but I was wrong as the end of our car was smashed in from behind. My chest was jarred into the wheel so painfully that I was out of breath. The gun went off again, blowing out the back window.

“Go, go, go!” Levi screamed at me.

“I’m trying!” I screeched back.

My adrenaline was high as we raced down the street, roaring engines, whipping winds and gun fire all boomed in my ears but I had one thing holding me together.

Get Levi out of here.

Save him!

I repeated that over and over till it was all I could think about. And with a new approach I scanned the area seeing if I could use anything to my advantage and like a gift from the gods I saw it sitting on the side of the road. Taking a deep breath I held it and pushed the car to its limits straight for the huge deserted truck with its ramp down.

“What are you doing?” Levi asked the fear in his voice evident but I gave no answer. We had to survive! The spray of bullets hit the middle for the dash board and I flinched but continued till I was almost on it and with a quick jerking movement just in time I got out of the way but my wheel clipped the huge metal object barely but at the speed we were going had us flipping on our sides but not before I spotted the black car fly up on the ramp unable to avoid it and flipped through the air to crash into the trees.

I heard an explosion but I had to close my eyes as we slide down the road on the side of our car till it finally hit a huge tree on the other side of the road and stopped.

Everything was so quiet it was deafening after all the commotion. The seconds ticked by as I tried to move but I was stuck by the seat belt. I glanced over to Levi who was practically hanging over me, he was unconscious.

“Levi” I crocked roughly, he didn’t move.

Grunting I reached over to my seat belt and unhooked it. My body slammed into the door so unexpectedly my breath rushed from my lungs. Slowly I maneuvered myself to a sort of standing position to reach over Levi and throw his door open. My body hurt in places but I pushed through unbuckling his seatbelt and carried him out of the tipped car. It almost took all I had to get him out the car and on to the ground. I laid him gently on the dirt crouching over him, my hand caressed his soft dark hair tenderly.

“Levi” I whispered. I noticed a trail of blood on the side of his face where he must have hit it. “Damn”

“Levi” I said louder. I watched his eye lids flutter and sighed in relief. “Come on Levi, wake up for me please” I pleaded softly.

Then I saw those deep brown eyes open, staring up at me in confusion.

“Are you alright?” I asked him.

“What happened?” I bit my lip nervously and glanced at his wrecked car.

“We got away” he slowly sat up and I help him as he took in his car and grimaced.

“Man this sucks.” He said hoarsely. I nodded in agreement as was just about to rest and catch my breath when I heard a whine and a clawing noise.

“Lakota!” I exclaimed jumping to my feet and tore the back door open to see him on his hind legs trying to get out the door. Quickly I reached in and lifted him out; he staggered a while before sitting down to rest. He looked shaken but not too hurt.

“What happened to the hunter?” Levi asked suddenly alert.

“Dead” I said curtly. He was silent for a while before dropping his head down.

“Were just leaving a trail of dead bodies aren’t we.” I didn’t answer as I took in the stream of black smoke rising in the air where the black car burned from across the road.

We were safe… at least for now.
