Chapter 14: Jakki
Andrew and I talked for a few minutes before Tadashi tapped his shoulder, saying they had to leave. Andrew had to help train a young Fire Elemental and Tadashi wanted to work on his archery. After they walked away, I turned towards Ryan.
“Archery?” I asked. He nodded.
“There are multiple areas, and even different rooms, on the training floor. Training doesn't just mean combat and fighting. There’s also magic training and Elemental training. Usually, people go to the outdoor training ground to do archery and other long distance training, but it’s supposed to rain soon, so they’re doing it inside.” Ryan looked at his phone and answered a text. I bit my lip and looked at my shoes.
I usually felt wary around guys. Not just because of my father, but that was one reason. Everywhere I went, guys would act inappropriate and try to hit on me. They tried to make me feel uncomfortable. I hated being around them. Ryan was different, though. It was hard not to like him. He was really nice. It was like he knew about my past, though that had to be impossible, and was trying to make me as comfortable as possible.
Andrew was nice as well, and knowing that he was like me helped a bit more. He showed me a few fire tricks and we talked about how I managed to find out, though I told him I don’t remember what I did, I just remembered the aftermath. I asked him how he found out, but he seemed reluctant to answer and seemed relieved when Tadashi reminded him that they had to go. He said he’d tell me later, but I said I wouldn’t make him. He smiled gratefully at that before leaving.
Tadashi and Jay were different kinds of guys, though. They reminded me of the guys you’d find at a public school. Typical teenage boys. Tadashi seemed like he was used to everything going his way. He seemed nice and laid back at first, but he seems like he could get angry at the snap of a finger if something went wrong.
Jay, on the other hand, seemed like he was annoyed with life. He acted like he didn’t care about anything and he hated everything going on. He seemed like the kind of guy who could be rude and mean and feel no remorse. I dreaded sharing an apartment with him.
I heard a thunderclap and jumped, too lost in thought to notice what was happening around me. I looked out the window at the pouring rain, wondering how long I was spacing out for.
“About five minutes.” I heard Ryan say. I looked over and he smiled. “You were out of it for about five minutes. I was just about to poke you to get you to snap out of it.”
“How did you know I was thinking that?” I asked him.
He shrugged. “I could tell by your face. It was obvious.” He looked back at his phone. “It’s your lucky day, Jakki. The leaders want to meet you and Jay.” He made his voice sound cheery, but it was obvious he didn’t really think it was lucky.
“Why do they want to meet us?” I heard Jay asked. I jumped for the second time; I didn’t notice Jay and Rain coming up behind me. Rain and Ryan looked at each other, Rain chuckling. Jay rolled his eyes.
“They like to meet the new people that come to the Main Facility.” Ryan looked down the hall. “Her office is just down this way. We can go now.” He started walking back the way we came, towards where the offices were. Rain walked next to him. Jay and I looked at each other and followed behind.
Ryan stopped in front of one of the many doors and knocked lightly. The sign on the door said “Grant.” I heard a faint voice say “Entrez.” Ryan opened the door and let us in before coming in and closing the door.
The office was roomy- two office desks were pushed together to make one. One chair was occupied by a young woman. The other chair was in front of the other desk, currently empty.
The woman had dark silver hair, like Rain and Ryan’s. She looked up from her computer and smiled at us. She stood up and motioned for Jay and me to sit down and motioned for the twins to follow her. Jay and I sat down in the chairs and waited. He leaned his head back, crossed his arms over his chest, and closed his eyes, looking like he hated the world. I bit my lip and crossed my legs, resting my hands on my lap.
The woman talked to them for a few minutes, switching between English and what I think was French. I tried to make out what they were saying, but it was confusing and I eventually gave up. A few minutes later Rain and Ryan left and the woman came and sat back down on her desk.
She smiled sweetly at us. “You are Jackson and Jacquelyn, correct?” She asked. I could detect the French accent in her voice. Jay nodded and I looked at her confused.
“I haven’t gone by Jacquelyn in years. Not since I was nine. How did you know that was my name?” I said.
The woman looked away from me for a few seconds before looking back at the two of us, ignoring my question. “My name is Mae Grant. Sadly, my husband, Michael, could not be here today. He’s in Italy at the moment. But if you have any problems or questions, you can let me know.”
I looked at Jay, who was still acting like he hated the world, and back at Mae. “Actually, I believe that there has been a mistake.”
“A mistake?” Mae asked. “How so?”
I bit my lip. “I think there’s been a mistake with the rooms. I don’t feel comfortable sharing my room with a male.”
Mae looked at me, genuinely confused by the problem. “What do you mean? I thought you’d be fine sharing a room with your brother.”
