NightTide: The Girl With Red Eyes

Chapter Is This What She Meant?

This was the first time I saw outside, at-least not through a window... It was beautiful, everything was far brighter than it was inside and there were more colors...

Owen turned around to look at me and Kayla. “Alright it looks like were moving three packages, the trucks are out of commission right now so were going to have to walk them there.” I shrugged and Kayla nodded.

We turned the corner and found a group of people moving around boxes. They seem preoccupied and Owen walked up to one who had a clipboard. They pointed to the far end of the area and Owen waved us over there. After we walked over there were three duffel bags.

Owen picked each one up and walked over to us. “Alright Red you carry this one, it’s the lightest.” He handed it to me, it sounded like it was filled with paper. He handed one to Kayla, and slung the last one over his shoulder. “We got hike ahead of us, the drop offs about fifteen kilometers from here.” A groan came from Kayla but she didn’t say anything.

The walk there was awful, by the time we got it felt like my feet were bleeding, they weren’t but it still hurt. I guess we got lucky, when we showed up the people waiting for us asked if we wanted a ride back. Owen didn’t even get to say anything Kayla had butted in accepting the offer.

They asked us to wait around for a minute, and it didn’t take long until a car came around. We all got in and it was comfortable, I was just happy to be off my feet but the seat was very soft. Owen sat up front, he didn’t look to comfortable I think he too tall for a car; me and Kayla sat in the back. Owen was letting the driver know where we needed to be.

I leaned back into the seat and closed my eyes. It felt amazing not standing on my feet. I was starting to nod off when I felt something touch my head. I opened my eyes to see what it was and Kayla was running her fingers through my hair. She smiled at me, it was... pleasant. I did fall asleep for a little bit, though It didn’t feel like it was very long before we got back.

We got out of the car and I felt the need to stretch, my back popped when I did. Owen looked at us, “So, want to grab a bite to eat?”

Kayla had a neutral towards his question. “Yes, I guess I’m getting kind of hungry.” I just nodded.

We walked long enough for my feet to start hurting again. We stopped in front of a building that had a large glowing sign, it said Take Out Diner.

Owen looked at us before he opened the door. “We don’t know how someone might react to seeing Red in a closed in place. Kayla, you stay outside with her. So, what do you guys want?”

Kayla needed a minute to decide and I don’t recall eating anything... then I heard a noise come from my stomach. “What was that?” Kayla laughed and Owen grinned.

Owen was trying to not laugh at me. “Sound like you’re hungry Red, how we get you a burger and some fries?” I shrugged.

Kayla figured out what she wanted. “Just get me some pancakes.” Owen nodded and went inside.

We stood outside for a while, it was... boring. Some people went in and out of the store while we waited for Owen. I was looking around when I got Kayla grabbed the back of my shirt and jerked me inside the diner.

Owen was holding our food seemingly very surprised. “What are you two doing?”

Kayla said it quickly enough. “There was someone staring Red down. Don’t know who they are though, it worried me.”

Owen sighed. “Alright then, let’s head back before we eat. Hey Red can you carry this?” I nodded and he handed me the food, it smelled amazing.

I followed Owen and Kayla but the walk back was uneventful. Kayla didn’t see the person again.
