Chapter 17
The first ever Terran sky surfing meet on the beach had started and Dan competed on the water as Peter and Morgan watched him from the shoreline.
“I’m impressed,” Peter said. “You were right to approach him. He is incredibly focused. He can be useful.”
Dan ran out of the water with his surfboard at his side shaking the water off his body and hair.
“Good work Dan,” he said.
“Thanks Coach.”
“Take a break before your next heat.”
Dan began to towel off seeing Grace walking towards him.
“Grace?” Dan questioned. “You’re here?”
“Yeah, I thought I’d come out to support you.”
“Well thanks.”
Grace stared silently at his face and eyes not helping but becoming lost in them.
“Well is there something you wanted to tell me?”
Grace blinked for a moment and said, “.....No, I’m good.”
Grace turned to leave with her face looking deflated.
“Grace?”
She turned back with a hopeful look on her face.
“Would you like to go out with me?”
“I didn’t think you would have ever asked me,” Grace replied with a smile.
Both of them broke out into laughter as Peter observed them both.
“Who is the girl?”
“Think her name is Grace,” Nicholas answered. “She is friends with Kyle Smith’s girlfriend, Sarah. I think Dan is into her.”
“You could use her to your advantage as a way to get to Dan.”
“How do you mean?” Morgan said standing nearby.
“Give him an incentive,” he said. “He will protect her and I am sure there are still some humans left who still don’t like humans and Terrans mingling.”
Morgan and Nicholas faces showed a looking of understanding as if Peter fed them the idea of how to accomplish it.
“Exactly.”
Grace hugged Dan and picked her up off the sand lifting her up into his arms and put her back down.
“Call me,” she said smiling.
Grace turned away walking down the beach where Dan just shook his head some more and chuckled.
Once Dan had gained the courage to call Grace she picked up with a sincere and warm voice. Dan approached her with the idea of going to a park which she countered with by stopping by the diner to pick up an order and eat outside alfresco. They ate together sitting on a wooden picnic bench.
“Thank you for calling me,” Grace said. “I wasn’t sure if you would.”
“Yeah, well Kyle kind of pushed me.”
“I’m glad he did,” she said smiling.
After finishing up and throwing away their empty containers, they took a walk down a trail where gently Dan slid his hand into Grace’s. He wasn’t sure she’d take it but after she did it was easy and comforting.
However, perfect everything was going on their first date Morgan and Nicholas had followed Dan but stayed well out of their line of sight.
“Hey, you wanna see a trick?” Dan said, stopping midway.
“Trick? Okay.”
“Just watch this,” he said.
Dan guided his hand in front of him focusing on the fountain pool until Grace could see water spouts shooting into the air creating a series of fountains of clear crisp blue water.
“Wow, that’s incredible,” Grace exclaimed.
“You are doing all this just with your mind?”
“Yep,” Dan replied, holding his hands to manipulate the water into balls bouncing on the surface of the water.
“You know what you need to do?” Morgan said, looking at the runner.
Alex, was in his late twenties out for his daily run liking the track around the lake the best, especially on days when the weather was really hot. He was already sweaty wearing his sleeveless tank top and shorts.
“I do,” Alex said, staring blankly at Morgan.
“Good, and you won’t remember us meeting.”
“I won’t remember us meeting.”
“Why don’t you finish your run now?”
“I am going to go finish my run.”
“You really think Dan is going to be pushed enough to act out?” Nicholas said, looking at Alex running away.
“He’ll do what he can to protect her,” Morgan said. “Not everyone is into seeing Terrans and humans mixing it up.”
Dan continued making the water in the lake dance to Grace’s wonder until a hand was on her shoulder turning her around. It was Alex.
“What on Earth are you doing with him?”
“Excuse me?” Grace said surprised, stepping back.
Dan quickly put down his hands letting the waterfall back into the pool with a swoosh. Alex looked out onto the lake seeing the results of what Dan was doing as the water receded.
“What are you doing?” Dan asked curiously, stepping forward.
“Don’t you know that your kind isn’t meant to mingle with us?”
“Our kind?”
“You all are a bunch of freaks,” he said. He quickly reached his hand down grabbing Grace’s and tried to pull her away.
“Leave me alone,” she said, struggling to wring her hand away from Alex.
“I am doing this for your own good,” he said, attempting to drag her away from where her feet slid. “I am trying to protect you.”
“Protect me!?” Grace exclaimed. “I am out on a date with a friend!”
Alex kept persisting to try and pull her away which made her more upset.
“That’s enough!” Dan said, throwing up his hand.
Alex’s hand slipped from Grace’s and flew backwards falling to the ground. Alex slowly got back up looking like he was ready to defend himself.
“See, you are just like the rest of them,” he said, balling his fist. “You think you can come here and just take over our planet with your powers? Not if I have something to say about it.”
Alex tried to give Dan a right hook but it looked like his fist was stuck midway frozen in place. Dan stared at him accusatory making Alex’s nose bleed profusely and his other hand reached to his forehead rubbing it in pain until he doubled over.
“Dan!” Grace said, holding onto his arm. “Please stop! You are hurting him!”
She turned to look at Dan seeing all of the hurt and anger on his face. “Dan, look at me! I’m fine! You can stop!”
Alex let out a deep breath kneeling to the ground holding his hand up to his nose. Dan looked back at Grace where she could see his features now were softened without the creases in his forehead. Grace looked back at Alex still looking disoriented standing up and walking away haphazardly.
“God, what happened to you?” she questioned. “It looked like you were going to kill him.”
“He had no right to do what he did,” Dan replied, looking bitter.
“Yeah, in this world there are a lot of bigoted assholes.”
Dan took a final look at the way Alex was walking back until Grace turned him around and they went to walking back down the path they were on.
“You see, I was right,” Morgan said. “If he believes that by joining with us he is protecting humans for their own good we can win him over if he is doing it to protect her.”
