“My ex went for an interview at that company, and they offered him fifty thousand a month.”
Helene growled.
“He hasn’t worked for half a year, just playing games at home, doing nothing. I can’t believe he got hired by Bamford Group. The HR must be out of his mind to hire such an unambitious
person with such a huge salary!”
Carlisle choked on his food and had to pause to catch his breath.
Helene hurriedly handed him a glass of water.
“You think they’re paying too much, huh? Fifty thousand bucks! And you only make thirty thousand a month. Why don’t you give Bamford Group a shot as well?”
Carlisle coughed even more intensely, his face turning red.
It took him a while to recover.
“Didn’t you say you had no contact with your ex–boyfriend? How do you know Bamford Group hired him?”
“His current girlfriend told me. The three of us were college classmates. His girlfriend and I used to be good friends, and we are even working at the same company.”
Carlisle was somewhat surprised.

It seemed the woman upstairs wasn’t Helene after all.
“But isn’t it awkward for you to work at the same company as
her?”
“That’s why I’m considering changing jobs.”
Carlisle didn’t say anything further, finishing his food in silence before heading to take a shower.
As he exited the bathroom, he noticed Helene still sending
messages.
Carlisle told Helene that he’d be sleeping in the study tonight. Then he took his laptop and went to the adjacent room,
apparently planning to work late.
Helene didn’t care much and brought her change of clothes to shower as well.
Carlisle opened his laptop in the study but didn’t flip through any pages for a long time.
He then decided to call the HR manager.
The HR manager got so nervous when he received Carlisle’s call. Since joining the company, Carlisle had never spoken to him for more than five sentences; three of them were spoken earlier today.
“Mr. Bamford, you’re still up?”
“The guy we decided to hire, Diego, decreased his salary to ten thousand a month. Tell him it’s because he leaked salary information, and if he doesn’t agree, hire someone else.”
The following day, Helene woke up early and prepared a

As they ate, Franco suddenly asked, “Carlisle, where did you sleep last night?”
Carlisle’s face stiffened, and he glanced at Helene.
“I’m asking you. Why are you looking at Helene?”
“I had some unfinished work and didn’t want to disturb Helene, so I slept in the study.”
“This is just your first week of marriage. Put your work aside and spend time with Helene,” Franco pondered momentarily. “Why don’t you two go on a honeymoon?”
“A honeymoon?” Carlisle looked at Helene. “Is this your idea?”
“No. I didn’t say anything,” Helene couldn’t figure out how Franco knew Carlisle hadn’t slept in her room last night.
Carlisle didn’t believe her.
“Helene never said that. I’m just anxious to have a grandchild. You better make a baby; I’m still waiting.”
Being forced to have a baby early in the morning, Carlisle felt disgruntled during breakfast.
Standing at the doorway, Matilda observed the situation and recalled the prenuptial agreement she found while cleaning Helene’s room.
If Franco knew these two planned to divorce in six months, would he be utterly disappointed in Helene?
Then her niece might have a chance!

After leaving home, Helene immediately took a leave from work and went straight to the hospital.
Her grandmother’s surgery was scheduled for next week, and this week was dedicated to a series of preoperative examinations.
In the morning, Helene met with her grandmother’s attending physician, Niall Anderson, after the ward rounds. Niall was a sophisticated and handsome doctor, rumored to have studied abroad, making him one of the outstanding young doctors.
He patiently and meticulously explained her grandmother’s condition to Helene.
The way he did it also impressed the nursing staff.
“Dr. Anderson has been chatting with that woman for half an hour. If Dr. Wilson sees this, there might be some drama,” one of the nurses said with a hint of glee.
“I wish Dr. Wilson could see this. Dr. Anderson isn’t exclusive to her; he’s still single, and we all have a chance,” another nurse said.
“So, you’re interested in Dr. Anderson too?”
“It’s not just me. An outstanding man like Dr. Anderson is attractive to any woman.”
“Shh! Dr. Wilson is here!” The two nurses quickly fell silent and pretended to be busy.
Delilah Wilson passed by the nurses‘ station and glanced at the two nurses who had just been gossiping. “What were you talking about?”

One of the two nurses awkwardly smiled, “We were just saying how patient Dr. Anderson is; he’s been talking with that patient’s family for half an hour.”
Delilah glanced toward the doctor’s office and saw a young girl sitting across from Niall.
The girl had her hair tied up in a high ponytail, with fair and tender skin, looking as innocent as a collège girl.
The girl said something, and suddenly, Niall burst into a smile.
That smile was comforting and refreshing like warm winter sunlight or a gentle summer breeze.
It was precisely because of Niall’s smile that Delilah found herself drawn to him. She had pursued him for three years during her study abroad, but Niall remained indifferent no matter how hard she tried.
Delilah’s face visibly darkened at the sight of that radiant
smile.
“Whose family is that?” Delilah asked.
“She’s the granddaughter of the patient in Bed 23.”
“The one with late–stage cancer?” Delilah recalled. “She hasn’t paid the full surgery fee yet, right?”
“She only paid the deposit and still owes over 400,000.”
“Then let’s schedule her surgery when she pays it.”
“But she’s Dr. Anderson’s patient,” the young nurse replied, surprised by Delilah’s jealousy.

“Arranging the operating room is my responsibility. I have to prioritize patients who have paid in full. If there’s any problem, tell Dr. Anderson to talk to me.”
From Niall, Helene learned about her grandmother’s severe condition, and tears rose.
Handing her a tissue, Niall reassured her, “Don’t worry; as long as we perform the surgery as soon as possible, we can get your grandmother’s condition under control.”
Helene nodded and expressed her gratitude, befriending Niall on WhatsApp for future contact.
The real estate agency called Helene in the afternoon, saying that a client wanted to view her apartment.
She rushed home, but it took her a while to realize that the locks had been changed.
A neighbor informed her that her boyfriend had brought a locksmith yesterday to change the locks.
Furious, Helene immediately called Diego, only to find that he had also changed his phone number.
Bamford Group.
Helene went to the front desk to inquire about Diego’s department, but the receptionist had no idea who Diego was.
Getting anxious, Helene tried to enter the building to look for him, but the receptionist naturally couldn’t allow her inside.
Helene waited a while and slipped in while the receptionist went to the restroom to touch up her makeup.

Bamford Group had twenty–five floors, and Helene began her search from the fifth floor, where the technology department was located.
Since she didn’t have an access card, she had to climb the stairs. She continued searching until the fifteenth floor but still couldn’t find Diego.
Exhausted, she waited near the elevators, hoping to catch one
when someone else used it.
As the elevator door opened behind her, a middle–aged man stepped out, followed by another man.
But upon seeing Helene, that man quickly retreated into the elevator and immediately pressed the button to close the door.
