Evil Angels

Chapter 9

Emma’s POV

I sat in the cafe of our town, drinking coffee during my morning break from work. It has been about two months since the murder in the fields and the Sheriff hasn’t found any leads on the victim or who did it. The whole town has brushed it off like it was just an animal attack but I have still been curious about it.

The bell on the door rang out as someone stepped in. A chill blew through the cafe making me roll down the sleeves of my flannel. I didn’t look up to see who entered, the wind probably just blew in from outside.

Wow, it sure is chilly today.

I heard Anne, the waitress, talking to whoever came in at the counter..

“Oh, it is a pleasure to see you again. Did you come down for a cup of coffee?”

I haven’t seen her around here before.

I looked up from my coffee to see a girl standing at the counter. She had long black hair covering most of her pale face. She was probably about 6′9" to 7′0". Her black coat covered the rest of her except for her almost white hands. She looked around at the tables then back to Anne, “Oh no coffee for me. It seems like that is the only thing that Larus drinks and I am getting tired of it. I was actually wondering if you had any more of that apple pie you gave me last week. Larus and I really enjoyed it.”

Larus… the guy that owns the castle by my house? I don’t remember anyone else living with him.

Anne smiled, “Sure thing! You just take a seat and I will be back in a few minutes.”

The girl nodded and sat on one of the stools. She looked around the quiet cafe as she waited. I finally got a glimpse of her face when she looked towards the record player near me. Her face was just as white as her hands. I stared a little longer until her dark red eyes stared back at mine. I averted my gaze back to my coffee and pulled out a tip for Anne.

Red eyes. Are those contacts?

I left the money on the table then walked out still feeling the girl’s gaze on me. Outside I rolled my sleeves back up and headed back to work.

That’s strange. It’s pretty warm out here.

Once I got in the store, Andy walked past me, “Oh you’re back! I was just going to the post office for a minute. I will be back soon.”

Andy walked out of the store while I walked down the aisle to the refrigerators. The doorbell rang again only a few seconds later. A chill came over me again, “Andy did you forget something?”

I turned the corner of the aisle to see a man standing there. He was really tall, probably seven foot whatever and wore all black. My eyes stared at his pointed ears shaped like an elf’s. His black eyes looked me over, “Ah, you are looking at my ears. It’s okay a lot of people do. I was born with them this way like a birth defect I suppose.”

I snapped my eyes away from him, “Sorry… What can I get for you?”

He smiled, “It’s quite alright. I haven’t been into town in awhile so I decided to come down and have a look around. Is Andy still around?”

I couldn’t help but return his smile, “Yeah he is still around. If you don’t mind me asking, where did you come down from?”

“Oh, I live in that castle about twenty-ish miles from here.”

My eyes widened, “Oh! You must be Larus then. I am your neighbor. Well, technically not, I live in a cabin down the mountain from you.”

He laughed, “Wow, and we haven’t met in person until now. I must be a bad neighbor. Maybe we can have coffee or something sometime. When is a good time for you?”

“I work here Monday through Thursday. Other than that I am free, I normally just hang around my cabin on my days off.”

He smiled again, “Perfect. I have to leave now. Until we meet again…”

“Oh, I forgot to introduce myself. I’m Emma,” I held out my hand which he shook.

“Okay see you again, Emma.”

He turned, walking away, and as soon as the door closed behind him the warmth of the store came back.

Strange… that’s the second time that has happened today.
