Dweller

Chapter 6

I slowly open the door, Quarry goes running and I follow quickly behind him. Quarry kills the first werewolf with ease, with the advantage of the surprise attack. However we weren’t too lucky for the vampire in the room.

Not only are vampires are to kill now that it was new of our presence a snake attack was off our charts. We both bend our knees getting ready to charge. The vampire shows us his fangs hissing.

We both sprint off in different directions surrounding him and we face each of us on different sides. His long nails scratch across my chest making me go flying.

My back slams against the wall, my head goes dizzy from the impact. Blood slowly trickled down my head, I swiped it out of my eyes and went to stand prepared to attack again. I joined my brother by running around the vampire. He was waiting for me to get back up.

We attack again, this time I kick instead of slashing with the small knife. I land a solid left kick to his side causing him to stumble and my brother slashes him across the chest. It still isn’t enough to kill him, but enough to cause him pain and annoyance.

We quickly do the same strategy again but instead of his side I kick his back shins, causing him to stumble which Quarry then uses as an opportunity to kill the vampire. He drives his knife into the vampire's heart. I quickly go over to a library chair and rip off a leg. I quickly try to shave down some sort of point. By the time I have it carved the vampire is making its moves to try and get up again. Which I quickly end with the now pointy end of a chair leg.

We both caught our breath, and were both panting like dogs. We know we don’t have much time to dilly dally.

“We should split up. And head to the training grounds. There's something here I want to grab before we leave. So go ahead.” I say as I quickly pick up a small backpack.

“Are you sure?” He says hesitantly. He looks over to me with concern clear on his face, he’s still panting but seems to be doing better. Sweat is dripping down his forehead, and is covered in some scratches from the fight.

“Ya I’m sure. Don’t worry, I'll catch up.” I say confidently. I nod before I see him go running through the now newly created hole in the glass. He plunges down the balcony and into the dark forest, he’s quickly gone from sight.

I quickly turn around running throughout my room collecting small little items. I grab a couple of knives, some water bottles and my new diary that I had written in through the last couple of days. However, yesterday and today I havne’t written anything in so I'll have to do that later. Once this mess is cleaned up. I also grab a pen, so if I have to I can write while I travel.

Once I had collected everything that I needed I headed the same way Quarry was headed. I jumped down and darted into the forest making sure to keep low. I stop after a couple of minutes nearing a group of vampires and werewolves talking.

“How many have we killed?” Asked one of the werewolves.

“Four I believe.” Answered a vampire to the left of him.

“So 8 left can’t be that hard.” Answered another werewolf.

“Alright, I'll check the 4th floor. I’ll meet up back here with you guys later” said the first werewolf. And with that they all scattered going to their own floor.

I remained there to make sure they wouldn't come back anytime soon, and then silently left.

The forest creaked and ground, the animals of the night were out, and were observing what was happening around them. The owls hooted above the trees, and the crickets sing harmonies with their friends. Everything seemed so peaceful.

The sound of crashing water slowly took over as I slowly came to a stop. I came out of the tree line to be greeted with a great river. The water was rippling through as if a big downpour had happened when no one was paying attention.

Sharp jagged rocks ever so slightly came out of the water, fish swimmed with the water following it down stream. I knew I had to cross quickly. Climbing the trees could take too long, time I wasn’t sure I could spare. But at the same time going through it could be dangerous, while going around would add to much extra time.

I chose the worst option. I went straight through. I pushed against the strong current. My body was pulled along and was forced under the water several times. I bumped into rocks and was shoved into the ground. Finally after pushing against the current I pulled herself to the other side.

I was drenched. My bag was wet. I could only hope that the waterproof part did its job. Despite the cold tremble taking hold of my body I had to carry on. My energy was slowly getting sapped out of me and I knew I still had a good while left to go.

I carried on while pushing through the bushes and tumbled on rocks or tree roots. Thorns pressed into me as I walked on. My legs started to give out. This journey was taking a massive toll on my body.

Finally I sank down to the ground, not having the energy to get up I put my back up against the nearest tree. I only hoped that I was close enough to the grounds for Quarry to find me.
