Dweller

Chapter 4

One good thing about being a forgotten child is that I have no maids constantly looking at me, and there's no immediate attempts on my life.

The days continue as if part of a clock cycle. We wake up, change into a simple dress, and head down for breakfast. Have one of the most boring and intense breakfasts later. With the usual poisoning of one of the head children.

We then all head back up to our rooms and continue the day whether it be for the girls to practice their arts or for the boys to go train and go to school.

Then have dinner, write in my diary and sneak out at night spar with Quarry. And repeat.

But even the clock got broken and that is what happened today. After 12 days and 12 nights. Father finally joins us for breakfast.

We are waiting for the morning brunch when the guards outside the room announce another arrival.

“Master Vater Von Allem Demopolis, has arrived for breakfast.” Everyone in the room stiffins. The children all check their posture and keep in a breath. No-one dares to even breathe, even the mothers.

The door seems to take a lot longer than usual as it slowly halts once fully open. Our father walked in. Everyone gets up from their chair, and bow or curtsey.

“We greet our esteemed father, Vater Von Allem Demopolis, I humbly thank you for joining us for this meal.” All of the children chant out. While the wife’s chant “We humbly greet the Master Vater Von Demopolis.”

We stay in our bow or curtsey. Our father is an elusive figure. He rarely shows up for dinner but when he does it’s never for no reason. He always leaves us with some sort of information or warning.

He has long blond and brown hair that is tied to the bottom of his head letting his hair freely flow downward. His hair reaches all the way down to the end of his waist. He has light hazel eyes that have a stronger brown to them. His face is straight and clean. His sword is tied down to the side of him he has on a pair of black long pants and a black short sleeve button up. Most of the buttons are undone showing off his chest and help reveal his muscles.

He slowly approaches his seat sitting down, making it look more like a throne. No-one looks up. He speaks first, his voice clear and sharp, holding all of the preseare in it.

“Johnny. Good job yesterday with your swordsman’s training, you will now be training with the knights after today, be prepared. Take a seat.” He continues on. “Savanna and Angel take a seat. Good job on learning how to serve tea and play an instrument. Nervig and Quarry do a good job on learning the law and studying studiously, take a seat. Nathan and Quincy, I haven’t however heard anything about you two. Would you please enlighten me on why that is?” He speaks the whole time firmly and raises an eyebrow. He knows we aren’t allowed to speak to him directly like this. Even if he asks a question.

“Hmm.. Nothing to say..? We'll have to find a way to change that. Now sit!” He says threateningly causing goosebumps to form. This was going to be a long dinner. And one I would have gladly skipped.

Father now pays his attention to the woman still standing, he goes on and tells them how good of a parent they are and how well they raised their kids. He continues to flirt with them, completely forgetting our presence.

They finally start to join us for dinner, Father takes the first bite signaling for the rest of us to start eating. Nothing really happens. It was strange he never does something without a reason, he doesn’t like to waste extra time. Finally he speaks, answering the question in all of our minds.

“Now you’re probably wondering why I’m here” He says as he starts to explain. “Over the next couple of days we might have some... unexpected guests, to say the least. In short we have suspicion that the Werewolves and vampires are planning on attacking. I want everyone here on high alert. No-one does or leaves their room without permission. Do I make myself clear?” He explains leaving no room for questions. There is a chorus of voices from around the room.

He then leaves. Just like that. I don’t know much about my father, he likes to keep to himself only appearing when he needs to say something never to be seen again to tell something happens. The room slowly breaks into soft murmuring trying to process the calamity of what is actually happening. Now ignoring the rules of being quiet in the dining room.

The children and mothers slowly leave the dining room, but we don’t get very far before a butler comes running over to the mother. He whispers something in her ear. His whole demeanor is tense and panicked. Whatever he said to her caused the same reaction.

She doesn’t say anything as she rushes past the butler, the butler quickly following hot on her tail. Everyone is confused and is now gazing at the same way she left.

We slowly start to disperse to our own separate rooms, tonight there will be no secret training as the security is going to be swarming the place.
