Chapter BIT 53

Chapter 53

Rebecca held Harvey’s wedding ring with trembling hands. All the blood seemed to rush to her head. She collapsed onto the floor, weak.

“Becky!” Cathy shricked, kneeling down and hugging Rebecca tightly. “Hey, this doesn’t mean anything, okay?” she said, trying to comfort her, but Rebecca was unmoved. Her hand reached for the letter tucked inside the brown envelope.

‘Babe, I have to consider everything, give me time. It’s not that I don’t love our little baby–but I need to feel certain before continuing with our small family. When I saw Alicia devastated, I realized that I truly love her.‘

Finally, the tears she had been holding back broke free. She sobbed uncontrollably, clutching the letter tightly in her hand.

“I knew this was going to happen. Why am I so foolish?” she sobbed, her chest tightening.

Cathy bit her lip, took the letter from Rebecca’s hand, and stared at it intently. “Are you sure this is from Harvey? I mean, this letter is typed and printed, not handwritten- doesn’t that seem a bit odd?

Rebecca shook her head, desperate. “I’m at the point where I can’t distinguish lies from reality anymore. I’m tired, Cathy. Tired.” She stood up and walked, her knees shaking, back to the sofa, curling up there like a fetus in a mother’s womb. She cried silently, with only her continuous tears indicating that she was still alive.

Cathy approached, sitting beside her. She didn’t say anything, thinking it would be pointless since Rebecca wouldn’t listen. Shortly after, the sound of a baby’s cry was heard. “Becky, the baby…”

“Yeah, she must be thirsty,” whispered Rebecca, stumbling towards the nursery, her eyes vacant as if all happiness had just been drained from her face. She sat in the rocking chair, watching her baby eagerly suck milk from the bottle.

“Should I let you grow up without a father?” she murmured, her eyes welling up again as she began to sob once more.

At the door, Cathy watched her friend with pity. “Becky, we have to find out if Harvey really intends to leave you or not,” she said, walking closer and standing by the crib.

“For what?” mumbled Rebecca, her gaze empty.

Cathy sighed. “To make everything clear! Right now, you’re in a grey area. Once things are clear, it will be easier for you to let go of Harvey. Like it or not, you have to move on.” she replied patiently.

Rebecca remained silent, Cathy’s words ringing true. “I can’t think right now,” she whispered, choking up. She kissed her baby’s head, then cried again. “I knew it, everything that happened between us was too good to be true. We decided to get back together after everything happened in less than 24 hours. I should have known it was an impulsive decision, but I foolishly trusted him,” she muttered softly.

“Don’t blame yourself. We never know what will happen. I’ll have my friend spy on Alicia’s house. I’m sure we’ll find answers. We don’t need to wait a week, Becky. This is an emergency! You know what, I’ll go to his office and gather information on Monday, so in the meantime, is there anything that could make you feel better?”

Rebecca shook her head. “I think I just want to sleep,” she replied. She stood up, placed her baby in the crib, then curled up on the thick carpet, hugging a large teddy bear.

Cathy nodded. “Alright, I’ll be in the living room,” she said, then stepped out and closed the door.

After Cathy left, Rebecca opened her eyes again. For nearly fifteen minutes, she cried until her eyes were swollen, then fell into a deep sleep.

A few hours later, Rebecca woke up to the sound of her baby crying. She stood up, her head feeling heavy. “Hi, gorgeous! Mommy is here,” she whispered, kissing her baby, feeling guilty for not being a happy mother.

She walked out carrying her baby and found Cathy half–snoring on the sofa. “Becky! You’re awake? Do you need something?” Cathy exclaimed, opening her eyes automatically at the sound of the baby’s cry.

Rebecca shook her head. “No, you can go back to sleep. I’m just going to bathe Snow,” she replied calmly.

“Are you feeling better?” Cathy asked, stretching her stiff muscles as she stood up. Rebecca nodded. “I wonder, is there anyone I can trust to watch my baby while we do the spying?” she mused. She stood in front of the glass wall, looking out at the imposing Manhattan.

Cathy stared. “Spying? What?”

Rebecca took a deep breath. “You said we need to find out the truth, right? Whether Harvey really intends to leave me or if it’s just that devil woman’s doing,” she answered Batly

“Oh my God! You must have gotten inspiration in your dream! My sister can watch Snow! She’s great with babies, and my mom is also at home. Well, she’s on dialysis, but overall she’s quite fit. She can supervise my sister while she takes care of Snow! How about it? Should we move today?”

Rebecca nodded, having no other choice.

“Great! I’ll pack Snowy’s clothes. Are you sure you don’t want to name her something else?” Cathy asked, half–grimacing.

“Something else?”

“Yeah, I mean a real name. We can change it anytime before you register her birth certificate, Cathy suggested, feeling like she was talking about a pet whenever she mentioned the name ‘Snowy!

Rebecca took a deep breath and looked down at her baby. “Lily, I will call her Lily,” she decided spontaneously.

Cathy clapped her hands once. “Good, that sounds much better!” she exclaimed, then rushed to the nursery to pack Lily’s things.

An hour later, the three of them were in the car, heading to Cathy’s house, not far from Jacob’s Café. After leaving Lily with Cathy’s family, they quickly headed to Alicia’s house, armed with a camera and binoculars.

“Why did you decide to spy yourself? We could have someone else do it if you wanted,” Cathy murmured while driving.

Rebecca shrugged. “I just want to see everything with my own eyes.”

Twenty minutes later, Cathy stopped the car across from Alicia’s house and they were already surprised by someone coming out of the house just a minute after th
