Chapter 11
“Ava, time to get up” Margo knocked on the bedroom.
Luckily, Ava was already up and dressed. Margo opened the door. She wasn’t sure how to explain what to say to the girl.
“I can walk to school and I know I will eventually need to go home in a couple of weeks,” Ava stated.
“Okay. That is not what I was going to say. I might need your help with something. Maybe we can help either out by getting used to being around one another. It might help to ease your mind of what happened.” Margo suggested.
“I think that might work. What about getting Cassandra to help us? I still need to settle the beef I have with my adopted parents first.” Ava interjected.
“I don’t want to get Cassandra involved in this problem. She hasn’t been answering the phone and starting to worry me a bit,” Margo admitted.
“Alright, you help me with my problem and do the same in return. The deal,” Ava suggested.
Both shook hands in agreement and got to work. They both had to call Serena to tell her what is going on. Ava walked to school and Serena was talking to Thomas. What the hell was her adopted brother doing here? Suddenly furious and stormed over to them.
“Got to be kidding me right now. Thomas, why are you here?” Ava is annoyed.
“I was asking Serena if she has seen you or was staying at her place. Mom and Dad are worried sick,” Thomas explained.
“Unbelievable,” Ava said and stormed away.
Thomas follows after her. Ava walks faster to get away from him. He gas rushes to catch up and yanks her arm. Then says,” I get it. You feel betrayed by your parents. You need time. I get it. But running away was not the answer. At least, give me peace of mind of where you are staying until this blows.”
“I am staying with a friend,” was all Ava said before walking away.
Thomas gets a call from Maria and Kaleb after Ava walks away. He walks towards the school parking lot to answer the phone.
“Did you see your sister?” Maria questioned.
“Yes. She is safe, Staying with a friend,” Thomas admitted.
“We have news regarding your father’s case with Henry’s death. The police still think he is a person of interest. They will need to question your father again.” Maria said, “I am hoping Ava can forgive us.”
Thomas knew it would be a while before Ava can forgive them for keeping the secrets from her. Instead, Thomas replies, “Mom, she needs time and space. I think it’s for the best. She’ll come around.”
Maria nodded and had tears in her eyes. Thomas ends the call. Maybe Lucius might be able to help. He dialed his friend’s cell but it only got his answering machine.
“Lucius, It’s Thomas. I need you to help me with something. Call me back. Bye.” Thomas places his phone in the car sole and drove away.
Meanwhile, it was already lunchtime, and Serena and Ava both sat in awkward silence. Both not saying anything to either, just eating. Ava could not take the silence and said, “Look. I am sorry for not mentioning anything to you. I still don’t appreciate my brother coming here to talk to you. I just need time. I am currently staying with Margo to ease your mind a bit.”
Serena sat back and crossed her arms. She was pissed at Ava. Deciding whether to talk to her or just advocate the silent treatment.
“Serena, I am truly sorry. I will include this time.” Ava apologized and gave Serena puppy dog eyes.
Serena fell for it and said, “But you owe for this.”
Both hugged it out and went about the rest of the school day. Nothing left to be said between them. They went their separate ways.
On her way to Margo’s house, she started to feel eyes on her. Looking around, she found nothing and rushed to the door. Margo mentioned Lucius watching her. Maybe that was who was watching Ava. Ava didn’t think about it for the rest of the day.
