Chapter 190

Chapter 190.

Chapter Sixity–Nine: Party Night

Kiara’s POV:

“Luna Kiara, you look like roadkill,” Rex greeted me, his eyes twinkling with mischief.

“What he means is, you look like a kitten who barely escaped a dog chase,” JJ tried to explain, his words not doing much better.

They both laughed.

Ugh! Why am I friends with these two again?

“Thanks for your concern, you jerk!” I retorted, my fist playfully connecting with their abs.

They winced, more from surprise than actual pain. My brothers–in- arms are always good for a laugh.

“You should have seen me in etiquette class; I was like a fish out of water,” I said.

I groaned, just remembering the mess.

“Do tell,” Rex encouraged, a grin on his face as we began to walk toward my chambers.

The hallways were empty, the castle quiet as the night set in.

“Oh, it was a disaster.” I began, rolling my eyes at the memory. “I had to curtsy at least a hundred times, and I’m pretty sure I tripped over my dress more than once. And don’t even get me started on the fork and knife thing. Did you know there are about a hundred different cutlery for a single–course meal?”

“Sounds dreadful,” JJ teased, trying to stifle a laugh. “I can’t imagine our Kiara being all prim and proper.”

“I bet you looked adorable, though,” Rex added, his eyes lighting up with amusement.

“Oh, shut up!” I laughed, poking them in the ribs.

We walked in comfortable silence for a few minutes until JJ eyed my dress, a mischievous gleam in his eyes.

“But Kiara, I didn’t know you were a fan of tiaras and puffy dresses!”

Heat rushed to my ch*eks as I remembered Christian’s insistence on my outfit.

“Christian said it was required of me as a queen,” I explained defensively, suddenly feeling self-conscious.

Rex’s laughter suddenly halted, his playful demeanour replaced by a serious one.

“Kiara, that’s not true,” he stated, his brows furrowed. “Yes, as monarchs, we are required to dress formally for meetings and events, but no one expects you to dress as if you’re attending a gala every day.”

The revelation hit me like a bucket of ice water.

Had Christian lied to me?

The feeling of betrayal washed over me, mixed with embarrassment and anger.

Was this her idea of a joke?

The pleasant atmosphere had been effectively dampened. As we reached my door, I gave them a forced smile, “Thank you, guys. I really needed that. Let’s talk about this tomorrow. I need some sleep.”

As they left, I could only wonder why Christian would play such a game. One thing was clear, though – tomorrow was going to be a long day.

Bidding goodbye to my new friends, I retreated to the safety of my

room, craving the softness of my familiar surroundings after a day that had been emotionally exhausting. The door closed behind me with a reassuring click, cutting me off from the world and its demands. I exhaled a breath I hadn’t realized I was holding, the weight of the day finally catching up with me.

Taking off the formal attire I’d been dressed in, I eagerly reached for my favourite night clothes. A pair of comfy shorts and an oversized t- shirt never felt so welcoming. They were a stark contrast to the extravagant ensemble Christian had insisted I wear. A wave of comfort washed over me, the soft fabric hugging me like a long–lost friend.

Deciding to unwind, I reached out to my mates through our mind link, the intimate connection we shared.

‘Kayden? Jayden?‘ I called out gently, seeking their reassuring presence.

But instead of the warm welcome I was used to, I was met with a solid wall, blocking me from reaching their thoughts. Confusion clouded my mind, rapidly replaced by a knot of worry in my stomach. They were there; I could feel it. Yet, they felt… distant.

‘Kayden, Jayden, what’s going on? Are you guys okay?‘ I tried again, my voice wavering with worry echoing in the silent recesses of our link.

Their anger and tension were palpable even behind the barrier. It was unsettling, terrifying even, to feel their emotions yet be unable to reach them.

After what felt like an eternity, the wall briefly lowered. A rush of relief flooded me at their familiar presence.

‘Don’t worry, sweetheart,‘ Kayden’s voice came through, although not as strong and comforting as usual. It was strained like he was fighting something.

‘A minor issue popped up in the council. We’re handling it.‘ Kayden added

Jayden chimed in just as quickly, his tone mirroring his brother’s.

‘We’ll be in bed late, love. But remember, we love you.‘ Jayden said.

Just as abruptly as they had let me in, the wall was back up, the connection severed. Their parting words lingered in the air, doing little to settle the worry churning within me.
