Chapter 99
Calla felt a myriad of emotions rush through her.
No wonder Mercer had said that he was going to Morvenia on a business trip. Atlas didn’t have any business there at all; he had gone there for Sophie, the woman in front of Calla right now.
Calla felt her gut twist. She had believed Mercer wholeheartedly.
“Since the two of you are so in love, why didn’t you stay together?” Calla knew that it was dumb of her, but she still decided to ask.
Sophie turned to look out of the huge glass windows, as if she was reminiscing about the past.
“My family and Mercer’s family were friends, and we grew up together. We were classmates in high school and at college, so naturally, we got together. Both of our families were very happy about it. After all, our standings are evenly matched.”
The thinly veiled jab about her family made Calla uncomfortable. She knew that she and Mercer were not of the same status at all, and they had never crossed paths before now. That said, Calla hadn’t expected Sophie and Mercer to be childhood friends.
Sophie paused for a moment before continuing. “We were actually planning to get married right after graduating, but my family got into an unexpected incident. My father committed a blunder in the army, and he was sentenced to 15 years in prison.
“My mother couldn’t bear it, and she kind of went crazy, I was forced to drop out, and my marriage with Mercer was postponed. After all, the Garlands couldn’t afford to be connected to our family at the time.
“After that, I fled to Macosia, where my uncle was, so that I could get treatment for my mother. The two of us lost contact after that–until I came back from Morvenia half a month ago.”
Calla did not know if she was telling the truth, but she could tell that the two really had been in love.
They had separated for some reason or the other, and they had probably only gotten back in touch recently. Mercer’s actions had made it very clear.
“Didn’t Mercer tell you that he’s married?” Even Calla felt that her defense seemed weak and inadequate.
“Of course. He would never lie to me. He told me that he’s married and that you’re pregnant, but the person he loves is still me. He says that he’ll divorce you once you’ve given birth to the baby,” Sophie replied.
“Did Mercer tell you to contact me?” Calla stared straight at her.
Calla did not think that Mercer would be cruel enough to make the two of them talk about who he would
end up with.
“Of course not. Mercer wouldn’t be able to ask, which is why I came,” Sophie said quickly.
Calla smiled stiffly. She said seriously to Sophie, “Ms. Jonas, Mercer is the person I married, and the child in my belly is his. If we’re going to talk about divorce, he should be the one to discuss it with me. There’s nothing that you and I can say on the subject!”
“But Sophie wanted to say something.

Calla did not give her the chance. She rose and picked up her bag. “I’m sorry, but I’m busy. I’m going to leave now.” She turned and walked out, not once looking back at Sophie.
