Mercer informed Carol and Zoey, who rushed to the hospital immediately. With her mother and sister by her side, Calla felt better.
At least she wasn’t easily agitated any longer, but she remained silent and melancholic.
After seven days in the hospital, it was time for discharge.
Jasmine had packed up her belongings, and Alicia peeled an apple for Calla to eat.
“Thanks,” Calla said, taking the apple and nibbling on it listlessly.
Noticing the time, Alicia frowned and asked, “Why isn’t Mercer here to pick you up?”
“He must be busy,” Calla said, forcing a smile on her pale face.
“No matter how busy he is, he should come to take you home. You were hospitalized because you were giving birth to his baby,” Alicia said. Her voice carried a clear tone of disapproval.
Calla didn’t respond. She instead turned to Jasmine and said, “Jasmine, you take the bags and hail a cab. Alicia can take me home.”
“Alright. Ms. Beckett, I’ll leave her in your hands.” Jasmine smiled at Alicia and left with the belongings.
As soon as Jasmine was gone, Alicia complained more freely. “Mercer is such a cold–hearted bastard! You’re still his wife, for goodness sake!”
“Please stop talking about it.” Calla sighed. “I didn’t let my mom come today because I didn’t want her to worry. Mercer and I were only together because of the baby. With the baby now gone, there’s even less tying me to him.”
Calla’s words were nonchalant, but her heart was in turmoil. Indeed, the only thing that connected them was gone. Would he ask for a divorce soon? His beloved Sophie was still eagerly waiting for him.
Alicia knew Calla was telling the truth, and that was indeed the reality.
She could only swallow her anger and pat Calla’s shoulder, comforting her. “It’s good you can see things for what it is. Don’t think about anything now. The most important thing is to take care of your health. Having a healthy body is the foundation of everything, you know?”
“I understand.” Calla nodded.
Alicia helped Calla out of the hospital room.
Before they exited the hospital, Alicia wrapped a thick scarf around Calla’s head. She then adjusted her coat
Alicia made sure Calla was well–covered before letting her go out.
As soon as they stepped out of the hospital entrance, a young woman in a white fur coat approached them.

Seeing the woman, Calla intended to ignore her and tried to pull Alicia away. But the woman wouldn’t let her go and stepped in to block Calla’s way.
“Mrs. Garland, don’t you recognize me?” The woman smiled, her face blooming like flowers in early
spring.
With the challenge laid down, Calla couldn’t ignore it. She replied, “How could I forget my husband’s ex- girlfriend?”
Calla deduced that Sophie must have learned about the loss of her child and came here on purpose. Otherwise, how could they meet so coincidentally in this vast Riverford?
“I need to correct you on that,” Sophie said, raising her chin. Her eyes were full of confidence and provocation. “Mercer and I are still together. His love for me never ceased.”
Calla had been in the hospital for seven days and thought it through. She fully understood that there was no possibility of continuing her relationship with Mercer. Yet, Sophie’s words still cut her deeply.

“I’m not interested in what’s between you two, but I need to remind you that I am still Mrs. Garland!” With that, Calla tried to walk away.
