Chapter 117
Mercer’s face darkened as he cast a glance at her before turning and leaving in a huff.
Jasmine quickly ran out to see him off.
After they left, Calla continued chewing her food while slapping a soft pillow, cursing, “Mercer, you bastard
Bastard!”
After seeing Mercer off, Jasmine came back into the room and hesitantly asked, “Mrs. Garland, d–do you really have to do this? Mr. Garland is-”
“Don’t mention him to me again.” Calla interrupted.
Jasmine shook her head and left the room.
From that day on, Calla began to try living peacefully here. Every morning, she would have Jasmine accompany her for walks in the nearby woods or by the creek, enjoying the fresh mountain air.
At noon, she would lie on a lounge chair on the terrace, basking in the sun. In the evenings, she would sit by the bay window to watch the stars.
In her free time, Calla would take out her books to study for the Certified Public Accountant exam. Her great ambition to become a public accountant had been put on hold since getting entangled with Mercer. Now, she had the perfect opportunity to study without interruptions.
Calla was almost five months pregnant in the blink of an eye. It was time for a prenatal check–up.
Deep down, she harbored the hope that she might get a chance to see Carol and Zoey when she returned to Riverford for the check–up.
However, this hope was dashed on a particular day.
One afternoon, as Calla was sitting by the bay window soaking up the sun, she suddenly saw the garden gate open. A black Bentley then drove into the garden.
It was Mercer’s car.
Marcer was probably coming to weigh her, as it had been exactly a month since her hunger strike.
However, following Mercer’s car, an ambulance also drove into the garden. Calla was puzzled about why Mercer would bring an ambulance.
Calla then saw Mercer step out of the Bentley, followed by Mr. Beck. Next, the ambulance doors opened, and two female doctors in white coats and two nurses carrying medical equipment emerged.
Just as Calla was filled with confusion, Jasmine opened the door to her bedroom.
“Mrs. Garland, Mr. Garland has arranged for doctors to conduct your prenatal check–up,” Jasmine announced before the medical professionals entered with their equipment.
Calla understood what was going on at that moment.
Mercer was determined not to let her leave this villa until she gave birth. He even had doctors and nurses

come to her for check–ups.
Calla didn’t resist the prenatal check–up. Instead, she cooperated with the doctors and nurses because she knew that resisting would be futile.
Mercer was the type to yield to soft approaches. If Calla made things hard, Marcer would take it even further than her.
Of course, she wouldn’t give in either by groveling before him; she would rather die than do that.
After the check–up, Calla heard steady footsteps approaching. Without looking, she knew they belonged to Mercer.
When he walked in, he asked the lead doctor, “How are she and the child doing?”
“Everything is normal,” the female doctor replied.
Mercer glanced at Calla sitting on the bed and asked, “How is her weight?”
The doctor checked the previous month’s records before she answered, “It has increased by 70.5 ounces since last month.”
At that moment, Calla realized that the female doctor performing the check–up today was the same one who had examined her at the hospital previously.
Calla couldn’t help but reflect: Having money indeed came with many privileges, like bringing the hospital to his home and summoning whichever doctor he wanted.
